How can you diet when you get hangry?

Genuine question.

I need to lose at least a stone, ideally more, which slowly built up over 3 years when I worked from home and didn't exercise much. My weight is now more or less constant, to within half a stone.

However, I get really nasty when I'm hungry, it's like I can't focus, my brain doesn't work properly, and stomach rumblings feel like vicious pain.

How on earth am I going to restrict my diet and still keep my sanity?

Thanks Smile

A low carb diet means I no longer get hangry and low blood sugar. Have you tried low carbing?

Gammeldragz · 03/06/2018 16:39

Cut out sugar and carbs. The hangry is a blood sugar problem, switch to high fat low carb and once you're fat adapted you'll be able to go half a day without eating and not even notice!

I am not the expert, but what I do is adopt a structure first - INCREASE healthy intake of non sugary unprocessed foods, and get out of the habit of eating after 7pm, and cut sweet things down to once a day, before then limiting calories more. After the first few days I sm not hungry.

Thank you! I probably do eat a lot of carbs. High fat -really?

Try low carb high fat. You'll lose weight & you won't be hungry while you are doing it. I'm like you & get very cranky when I'm hungry, but it's not happening at all doing LCHF. I'm currently doing the MN Low Carb Boot Camp & it's great. Sorry I can't link on my phone, but if you search you'll find it. There's a whole low carb topic.

Have a read of the Michael Moseley 8 week blood sugar diet there is loads in there about stabilising blood sugar to avoid symptoms like this. You don't have much to lose so probably don't need to do the full programme.

I get hangry and low blood sugar if I don't eat regularly (shaky, feeling dizzy). I had always dismissed low carb, thinking that it would cause those problems, but when I tried it I had no hangry or dizzy episodes.

I had full fat dairy and small portions of nuts, ate loads of veg and protein, rarely felt hungry and didn't crave sugar once in four weeks, and I lost a good half a stone.

Seconding the low carb way of eating.

halfwitpicker · 04/06/2018 17:07

Typical menu

FF greek yog and berries for breakfast
cheese and spinach omelette for lunch
steak and salad for dinner with lots of oil

snacks can be veg sticks, apple and peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, veg soup, cheese, cold cuts etc.

Purists will say avoid lentils/sweet potatoes etc but I include small amounts and i'm fine.
