I've just done something stupid. I reserved a place at the Manchester Marathon next year - April 2019.

Yesterday: I ate 2 chip barmcakes for my lunch. I had two burgers for my dinner. Last night I drank a bottle of wine. According to government guidelines that makes me a binge drinker.

My skin is blotchy. I've got pimples on my chest. My mouth tastes revolting. I've got zero energy - I feel so rough this morning I doubt I can get down the stairs without my heart pounding.

I'm 45 years old. Overweight, unfit, eating badly, fundamentally very lazy. Heading for diabetes and heart disease I imagine.

So the marathon. I'm not going to tell anyone in real life (because they'd kill themselves laughing) and I'm not going to think about it just yet. It's 50 weeks away And I need a much better frame of mind than the self-destructive lazy way of thinking that I have right now. I'm vaguely thinking I'll start with some beginners yoga (YouTube Yoga with Adrienne) and meditation (Headspace app).

And sort out my diet. I like Michael Mosley's books and I like Mediterranean-style food, so that lends itself to things like vegetables, good fats, meat, fish, lentils, beans. That's doable - it has to be tasty and realistic.

Then I'll download the couch to 5k app I guess. Then maybe do some of the 5k park runs. Then think about 5k to 10k.

I might not do the marathon in 50 weeks time. I might not even like running. The point is the end goal and the deadline and having something to work towards. I've also fancied trying dance classes or ice skating, but have been too lazy to do them.

Anyone up for joining me in a mental, diet and fitness overhaul? You don't need to sign up to anything stupid like I have Grin We can share motivation tips for when we don't feel like exercising or recipes.

Doing well with exercise here - 10k+ steps every day in May. Nearly done today's already after a C25K run first thing and a wander round the shops whilst DD is in ballet.

Struggling to be organised about meals though so diet has not been ideal.

Food wise I've been okay and have been walking loads. I think I've made my back hurt by walking so much.

Hello everyone, I think I may have found my people. Need to lose 5 stone, starting to have health problems because of the excess weight, and struggle to motivate myself to exercise due to anxiety/depression. Thanks for the info about the NHS weight loss site, some useful stuff on there.

Im awful at sticking with diets. I tried the 800 bsd one but i really felt awful after 4 days. As in nearly didnt make it to work. So im doing the 2 days a week at 800 calories, but sticking as best i can to principles. Although eating carbs with one meal a day for my sanity.

Will weigh 2mor and see what my progress is.

L1zz13 hope your back a bit better today! Maybe a bit of yoga to balance the walking?

Welcome hamish!

@comeagainforbigfudge great idea. Have had a not so walky weekend and do feel better for it. Will have a look at some YouTube yoga sessions.
