Gastric Bypass in 2 months

fontofnoknowledge · 18/04/2018 07:44

I would like to know if anyone on here has had a Gastric Bypass. I have jumped through all the hoops and am now just waiting for surgery date which should be in the next 8 Weeks. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a Bypass or Sleeve . (Not a band it's a very different Operation) .
It appears to be a very taboo subject on MN - (I have even felt the need to name change) and despite there being hundreds of threads on the latest diet, there is surprisingly little about the only scientifically proven longterm sustainable weight loss treatment for those with obesity or morbid obesity.
I am after any advice for the immediate post op period and the process of moving from liquids to solids and any other advice really.

I haven't lost any weight in 5 days !!! Which is the exact amount of time that I've been enjoying my food for.

I'm still well under 1000 cals a day though. Averaging about 800. So I should def be loosing still.

I'm hoping this is jist a blip!

Booked into Zumba tonight...will be interesting as I still hurt to walk from Tuesday's session!!!

Sofabitch · 31/05/2018 19:13

Just back from Zumba.

I think I might go die in the bath now!

fontofnoknowledge · 01/06/2018 07:59

Hi Guys, Fab job on the Zumba.Sofabitch . Don't stress about the number on the scales. You are moving more so building muscle. You'll find you have plateau for a while and then whoosh..

No date yet... watching the letter box.

Hi there
I had a gastric sleeve in March this year and should have done this years ago:) I'm seeing a steady loss and would say loosing 6-8 pounds a month and dropped 2 dress sizes even though lower bmi now nearer 33 - I find some days I can eat a small sandwich but the next day feel too full to eat much, it's amazing as eating minimal amounts makes you feel as full as eating a huge roast no hunger pains but can tell you are hungry at times - I paid privately as lower bmi and have other health issues that being slimmer will help with- keyhole surgery very tidy, pm if need to know more was eating soft cereal at 3-4 weeks and can now eat some meat, cheese and nuts bread some days 600 k others 800 so a vlcd can fit one small coffee am and a litre of fluid during the day -

Sofabitch · 01/06/2018 23:01

Wow only 1 litre of fluid. They really pressed for me to focus on drinking and make sure I get 2 litres a day. Which I've mostly been managing.

I hope the date comes soon for You! The waiting is the worst bit.

user1471464702 · 02/06/2018 05:50

You are right probably drink more than that - awesome results and easy to adapt diet to fit New lifestyle

notapizzaeater · 02/06/2018 11:42

I've had a quick look at my medical insurance - I can either have a band or a bypass.

Sofabitch · 03/06/2018 19:36

Hello!.

Pmt has been making me want to constantly eat! Yesterday I toped 900 cals the most ever! But we were out a festival and I ate an ice cream! No dumping thankfully.

I have lost 0.2kg this week. Which is a big slow down. But apparently it can go in stops and starts.

Been trying to cook more which has been going well! But i have also ordered myself 15 of the cook high protein meals to have in just for convienice. I figured each one will easily do 3 meals so it works out good value ;)

I hope you hear soon!

MrsBetfair · 03/06/2018 20:29

No time to write all of my lifetime weight struggles right now but I had a sleeve 8 years ago after 20+ years of losing and putting back on weight (I did every diet going!).

I was 5’ 4’’ and over 18 stone - BMI in the 40s. I’m now bobbing along at about 9st 12 and a BMI of about 23.

I can eat anything though not as much as before obviously. I can go out for a 3 course meal and no one would notice as I eat as much as an average ‘normal’ person would. I can still binge on crisps etc but the sleeve gave me the mental space to reassess my eating. I simply don’t see food as the battle I used to (though I still think about it more than someone who has never had any issues).

Never had dumping or any problems once post op pain styled plus went on to have a baby 2/3 years post op.

Never understood the Munsnet hate for WLS. Usually a group which goes with the evidence/facts but not where diet is concerned...

MrsBetfair · 03/06/2018 20:30

Oops - typos 😳

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 03/06/2018 21:05

Better weigh in to the thread I guess...
Had my sleeve on Tuesday. Cost a bloody fortune but my fault as was stupidly too picky about the surgeon. Have 50 kg to lose to get to ideal weight . Or rather I should say I had 50 to lose, but currently I’m already 10 down (including pre-op bit) and only 40 to go. Which has freaked me out a bit to be honest.
Took the plunge after failing a work ‘key man’ insurance medical; did every test under the sun and discovered quite a few medical issues were preventing me from ever losing weight (my body shut down last time I persevered with dieting: now I know why). Won’t complain though because it was same deficiencies that kept me a size zero immy 20’s Grin
Got through the pre op diet by knocking up huge batches of ratatouille and also loads of curried broccoli soup which worked a treat. Couldn’t have done the shakes before the op and am struggling with my high protein liquids post op if I’m honest, but only 3 days to go before moving on to puréed food.
Am thinking of getting some of those Ella baby purées for next stage - anyone tried them?

Sofabitch · 03/06/2018 21:14

We were told to avoid baby food like the plague. I survived on yoghurts and cottage cheese and blended meals.

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 03/06/2018 21:23

I might just do yogurts then. There’s something about sticking a blender in the family’s dinner that just doesn’t sit well with me, even though I do shedloads of cooking from scratch.

Sofabitch · 03/06/2018 21:36

The other thing I did was buy ready made soups. They were great. Could get lots of flavour and minimal effort. As i really didn't feel up to cooking at first

Sofabitch · 03/06/2018 21:38

@MrsBetfair that is so great to hear. Part of me is still so worried that I'll never be able to eat normally socially again. Or that I'm going to go through all this for nothing!

notapizzaeater · 03/06/2018 23:58

Thank god for that, don't think I could eat baby food without gagging, soup sounds better 😀

QOD · 04/06/2018 07:49

Heinz hearty soups (blended) were lowest fat and sugar and highest protein

fontofnoknowledge · 04/06/2018 20:43

Welcome to our thread Mrs BetFair it's fantastic to here from anyone on this journey, wether waiting waiting waiting.. like me or 8 yrs down the road.

Your story is a brilliant beacon of hope for all of us fed up with the impact obesity has on our health and well being and hope that surgery will not only work - but work long term.

Another 1kg off this morning. Strange nothing for a week and then a kilogram all at once.

My period is also nearly a week late now. I wonder if that's related to the vlcd? I'm 100% not pregnant DH has had a vasectomy and we haven't actually had sex.

Sofabitch · 07/06/2018 12:19

Weight loss has definelty started to slow down now. But still 1.3kgs in 10 days. If I continue to loose that a month I'll be happy.

AnythingConsidered · 07/06/2018 21:56

Today is my 8 week anniversary and I am down to 91.1kgs - really pleased with that. A total of 20kgs since January.

My weight loss has slowed down too - losing 1-1.5lbs, but i keep telling myself slowly off means my skin has time to catch up (no scientific fact to this, but makes me feel better!)

Going to measure and take pictures today (will report back) but definitely feeling it in my clothes - desperately need new bras (!) But don't want to buy anything until I have stopped shrinking.

On a positive, I did a wardrobe clear out and am now making some good money selling all the larger formal clothes on eBay!

fontofnoknowledge · 08/06/2018 09:45

Hey Sofabitch that's fantastic. Nearly 9lbs a month.

Have you upped your exercise at all in that time or just concentrated on the food side of things ?

Sofabitch · 08/06/2018 11:18

Morning all.

For some reason I thought you were further ahead than me anything. I'm 7 weeks today.

Any news on your date yet for? I have everything crossed for you!

I have been increasing my excersise too. I've been upping the pace of my dog walks. So rather than ambling along I'm walking at a fast(for me) pace. I bought a fitbit and have been trying to hit 10k steps everyday and I've started Zumba once a week. Which I hope to increase if I can find time.

I've lost 21kgs in 9 weeks (including the 2 week pre Op diet) I'm really close to under 100kgs now! Which is my first big target in my head.

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 08/06/2018 11:43

21kg loss sounds amazing!

I’m only on week 2 and already my loss has slowed down to a crawl - from 1 kg a day to 1 kg over 4 days. What’s the pattern of your weight loss? Had follow up with my surgeon yesterday and he instructed me to stop weighing myself. I roared with laughter at that one.

Another qn - how long did it take you to get through meals? I’m having protein shakes and it take me about an hour to get through 200mls (same with soups - Half a bowl takes forever). Makes my days verrrrrry boring.

On the bright side I only seem to need to poo twice a week now Grin

Sofabitch · 08/06/2018 11:59

200mls!! Wow I can't even do that now.

150mls/grams is about my limit. I think in the first week or 2 I was barely managing 50mls.

A cup of tea would take me an hour.
