Fruit & Veg record - anybody care to join?

I have recently read How Not to Die (well, on Audible actually) and its absolutely fascinating. All the different benefits different veg have and the different benefits each has depending on raw v cooked.

It advocates a plant based diet, but that wont happen for me. I am however committed to reducing meat and increasing the amount of veg (mainly) and fruit in my diet.

Would anybody be interest in joining in recording the different veg they have managed to achieve each day and in what ways? I'm talking pretty hard core here - aiming for 9 a day with a big variety.

I'd find it really interesting to see how others are achieving it.

I tried a tablespoon mixed in water, which I instantly realised was a mistake but, no matter how much I tipped out half and refilled with water, it was still as just as green. Confused EnvyGrin

Is it better I smoothies yum? How much do you put in?

Elementtree · 10/05/2018 17:01

in smoothies

Wildernesstips · 10/05/2018 19:11

L: chicken salad - lettuce, red & yellow pepper, red onion, cherry tomatoes, an apple (6)
D: chicken jambalaya - some veg repeats of lunch but also courgette, carrot and Swiss chard (3)

I used to put spirulina in smoothies so I would imagine it is ok - I think the recommendation is to start low and build up gradually to whatever the dose is you are supposed to take.

10+ feels super yum!

Highhorse1981 · 11/05/2018 06:45

This thread makes me happy
Love reading all the veg consumption!

Are you ladies all on the skinny side? I’m too skinny. I know that I don’t exactly eat in a way that’s going to help me gain weight but I can’t help it as it’s the food I love! Anyone got any suggestions for a way to slowly increase weight but still focusing on veg (please no cheese, I’m not a fan).

Elementtree · 11/05/2018 07:03

No. I'm 5'5 and just under 10 stone, so a bmi of 24- ish, I think. I'm not eating like this to lose weight but to help keep my lungs in line and hopefully, but I may be deluded, reduce the amount of medication I'm dependent upon.

I've only been eating like this for a few months and have lost weight but wouldn't like to lose too much more. I don't think this will be a problem because I love carbs and fruit and steroids keep my appetite set to "eat quick, a famine is coming".

MinaPaws · 11/05/2018 09:13

OK, I'm starting this properly today as the healthiest way to lose weight on a lowish carb diet (not cutting out fruit or porridge oats, just bread etc.) I'm aiming for 12-14 a day. Had 12 yesterday and felt good.

Started with breakfast raspberries and blueberries - 2
Lunch will be shop bought salad as I'm working in town.
Dinner courgetti with ricotta, mint and broad beans and a leaf salad.

mikado1 · 11/05/2018 09:31

HighHorse, I am 5,3 and in or around 9 stone. I am not skinny but am naturally about a half stone lighter so I would like to get ba k to that having gotten away lightly with major comfort eating the last few years. Not on a target as such but knowing over time it will drop with eating well and much lower level of sugar. I've read brain over binge and have succeeded in ending the binges so that's huge. I didn't eat a vegetable until I was 20 so I'm delighted I enjoy them so much now.

mikado1 · 11/05/2018 14:21

The healthy things I eat that are high cal as such are porridge, f2f Greek yoghurt, sweet and white potatoes, nut butters. I make lots of different oat cookies and bars with fruit that are probably good for healthy weight gain/general energy too.

Highhorse1981 · 11/05/2018 15:27

Hann mikado.

Highhorse1981 · 11/05/2018 15:27

Didn’t mean to post!

More later

mikado1 · 12/05/2018 08:21

I'm intrigued! [Grin]

Elementtree · 12/05/2018 09:19

I'm finally set up with a seed sprouting set up that might work. What day did you eat your sprouts shoes? All the youtubers say day 8-9 when the sprouts look like something I imagine they should look like, whereas Greger says day three for best nutrition but surely they aren't much of anything by that point?

Wildernesstips · 12/05/2018 11:44

Forgot to eat lunch yesterday, so only managed four: red pepper, spinach, green beans and carrots.

I'm not skinny (5'2 and 9 stone), I used to be 7 1/2 before I had to take steroids full time. @Highhorse, could you eat more whole grain carbs to increase your weight? I'm no expert though.

MinaPaws · 12/05/2018 11:53

yesterday
Breakfast: blueberries and raspberries (2)
Lunch - just ate a packet of nuts, seeds and dried golden raisins and dates as was on the run between meetings (2?)
Dinner: broad beans, peas, sundried tomatoes, courgettes, lots of fresh dill and parsely (5)

Total: 9

Highhorse1981 · 12/05/2018 12:05

I don’t think I’ve ever forgotten to eat lunch in my life!

Thanks for advice re how to increase weight. I don’t like but butters unfortunately but will start roasting my veg I think.

Just had early lunch (pictured, but I went back for more lettuce leaves and tomatos)
Greek yoghurt with punnet of raspberries (2)
2 apples
Large handful of blueberries

Thinking about calorie density, I suppose a good glug of olive oil on your salads would boost your intake by about 200 calories per day without any effort or extra eating highhorse.

Wildernesstips · 12/05/2018 19:02

Your lunch looks lovely Highhorse

B: Avocado on toast (1)
L: Tuna panini with lettuce and cucumber, grapes (3)
D: Pork stir fry with Pak Choi, sugar snap peas, red cabbage, orange, ginger and noodles (5)

Total 9

mikado1 · 13/05/2018 13:09

I can't post photos, no idea why? I've had B: strawberries, blueberries and ban an with nuts, seeds and Greek yoghurt.
L: wholewheat wrap 'pizza with avocado, cherry toms, mushrooms, courgette, red pepper and rocket and kale (7)
D: spag vol made with onion, garlic, celery, carrots, courgette and peppers with broccoli and green beans on side (Say 3)
S: grapes and almonds (1)
Total: 15

yumyumpoppycat · 14/05/2018 22:57

15 well done!

I had a bit of an off day on sat as went for family day out but still had about 5 portions of veg so not bad.

Yesterday (fasting) had avocado. baby leaves, and egg then a clementine; olives as snack, then butternut squash a veg burger thing and avocado again so approx. 5 again but I may have forgotten some.

today I had more avocado baby leaves and eggs, vegetable wrap for lunch and dinner green beans, kale, asparagus and chicken; plus a clementine and red grapes so about 8.

Slowly reading how not to die. It is making me want to eat more vegan style. I am confused though as I thought low carb was good for reversing type 2 diabetes, where he suggests vegan which would be much higher in carbs.

Hope all well

Brokenbiscuit · 14/05/2018 23:03

Great idea for a thread!

Elementtree · 15/05/2018 07:36

Yes, I read it with my bottom lip out as all my favourite things got linked to one chronic desease or another. With the exception of halumi, which I had a month ago, I've shifted to a plant based diet.

My dbrother, who is a fully paid up member of the paleo way of eating, considers this an act of harmful self restriction. But how I have eaten up to now hasn't done my health any favours and I'm willing to give it a go.

I've downloaded the how not to die app and concentrating on ticking off the boxes rather than just counting the fruit and veg total.

MinaPaws · 15/05/2018 08:57

@Elementree - were you following paleo before? Is this very different to paleo? I thought paleo allowed loads of green veg too just very few staple carbs. (Never really understood the difference between low carb/paleo/atkins etc)

Elementtree · 15/05/2018 09:06

I did read Mark Simmon's book and felt as though it made sense, in theory. I didn't eat a paleo diet though. Which does encourage you to eat lots of veg and some fruit. But it's the meat consumption that provides the bulk of calories on that diet and it's meat that Greger links to poor heart health and a host of other illnesses.

I was never really into eating paleo in a big way, just long enough to ditch some extra weight and then back to adding in the carbs and sugar, a not particularly excessive - exceptionally normal diet.

I do think Simmons was inspiring with regard to exercise though and increasing the amount of play in life and reducing stress levels - that didn't stick either though Grin
