Pcos

Shnazzyshot · 24/01/2018 14:28

I've recently been told I have pcos. I know it's slightly harder to loose weight when you have this but I'm really struggling.

About a month ago I cut out all my binge eating and all snacks. I just eat 3 meals a day. I have no self
Control so if I have a snack, I will just keep snacking so the easiest thing for me is to not snack at all.

I've also joined the gym, started running and do hiit workouts at home.

No alcohol since I started.

Why am I not loosing any weight?

An example of what I'm eating...

Beakfaat... pancakes made with eggs, banana and protein powder

Lunch... roasted courgettes, peppers and onions with chicken in a high protein wrap.

Dinner shepards pie made with carrot and swede mash and broccoli and cauliflower.

I've honestly cut my food intake in half. I would easily eat a multi pack of chocolates in one sitting. Loads of junk every day.

Any advice?

@Movablefeast me too, I'm a powerlifter/weightlifter and it's great for keeping the fat off 😊 as means I can eat more ha

Shnazzyshot · 27/01/2018 18:27

Sorry if I'm being thick here but can you explain a bit about strength training?

Like weights and stuff 😊

xLauraa · 27/01/2018 19:59

@Shnazzyshot So using the dumbbells, barbells, kettlebell, resistance bands etc...

ladybird69 · 28/01/2018 00:12

Hiya @xLauraa I really don’t eat much but I can’t ‘move’ a lot as I’m disabled, so I don’t burn a lot of calories. I went to the Drs and then to see a consultant as I had trouble with heavy periods, also trouble with weight , excess hair and migraines! I had blood tests, internal examinations, scan, internal scan. This took a year of toing and froing. All blood tests were fine, examinations, X-ray and internal scan just showed up slight lining of the womb but nothing to cause the pain and Niagara falls type monthlies! For the weight loss I was sent to a dietitian to help but I have been watching my weight since I was 13 so there was nothing that she could teach me! For the excess hair it’s my fault as my father comes from an Eastern European so I will be a Hairy lady! No offer of creams or laser treatment. And last but not least he wrote me a prescription for the mini pill as I was sitting across from him, a very large lass who knows the danger of having a stroke if you’re obese and then was dismissed. Absolutely no help whatsoever.
Now I have hit 48 I no longer have periods, I getting even more hair I look like a fucking yeti and the weight is sitting on my middle and I have to get it off. It’s not great for me.
In my younger life I was a dancer and then a Nursery Nurse which unfortunately have wrecked my spine and joints ☹️ I need to get some weight off them. New dr sending me to weight loss clinic yet again! Tells me to move around yeah easier said than done.
I have to go back in March so want to try and see what I can do myself oh and I have high blood pressure too.
Sorry for long selfish post but you might have been through something similar?

Killdora · 28/01/2018 00:24

I crapped myself after being diagnosed with PCOS (about the increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease)

The absolutely only thing that worked for me was cutting out all refined carbohydrates (so no bread, pasta, flour etc.) and sugar.

It definitely works though, all symptoms of PCOS disappeared after a week of cutting out refined carbs (I still have non refined carbs - brown rice/sourdough bread/sweet potatoes but in small portions) and I dropped from 17 stone 1 pound to 10 stone 7 pounds in about six months.

I also do stuff like making sure I'm eating something with protein/fat if I have something sugary like fruit (so I'll eat a handful of nuts with it) and have tons of veg.

And exercise - I can't afford a personal trainer and hate gyms so I signed up to an exercise group on Facebook. They post up a ten minute work out every other day for beginners to do at home which really helped me to start out.

It sucks, it's hard but I just told myself it's better than getting seriously ill. And I do feel about ten years younger now so it does feel worth it.

Shnazzyshot · 28/01/2018 08:13

Killdora, your symptoms disappeared after a week?! That's amazing and well done on the fantastic weight loss! I definitely need to try low carb. I have cut my carb intake slightly over the last few days but I will start properly tomorrow.

Ladybird, that sounds really shit. I really feel for you. Maybe low carb is something you should look into too?

Laura, I do use dumbells and kettle bells at the gym already but I'll try stepping it up a knotch. The thing is, I don't really know what I'm doing so I'll look into this more thank you!

Schnazzy I really need to low carb too. This thread has nagged me into taking this all a bit more seriously. Fancy a buddy?

xLauraa · 28/01/2018 10:25

@ladybird69 I apologise I wasn't aware you are disabled. I am a PA for a gentleman with SMA so have to do (basically) everything for him, and keeping his weight in check is one of them😊 so I absolutely know that it's not easy!
You have been through a lot over the years, it's rubbish when people dismiss you - it's as if they don't care at all which is frustrating when that is basically their job! But this new Doctor may be absolutely amazing!

Despite you not being able to move much, you will still need to eat a little more than just a salad per day!
Also TRY and find any positives in the day you can, because stress will cause your cortisol to be higher (stress hormone) which makes you hold weight too and keep your blood pressure elevated!

Have protein with every meal, do not cut carbs, and drink plenty of water - I'd suggest a glass with every meal 😊 and see how you get on! Even just a couple of eggs for breakfast, you need to get your metabolism going in a morning. This will help a lot!
I hope you find something that works, but keep going, you can absolutely do this!!!

xLauraa · 28/01/2018 10:27

@Shnazzyshot you will be able to find workout on google, try searching something like "kettlebell workouts for beginners"?

I have pcos and the only way I can lose weight is cut out refined carbs. I only have to look at a slice of bread to gain weight. I now only have them as an extremely rare treat. Cauliflower rice is a great way to replace rice. I wizz up loads and freeze it in individual portions. I exercise regularly too however once I cut out refined carbs the weight does tend to fall off, I spoke to a nutritionist who also have pcos herself and apparently there is a lot similarities between diabetes and pcos and for a lot of people it helps to apply the same dietary rules.

I know, I was shocked too!

It was sad, because I love refined carbs, but they are my PCOS enemy unfortunately.

Shnazzyshot · 28/01/2018 15:49

Jaime that would be great. When are you starting?

Laura, thank you I will look up some YouTube videos ready for the gym tomorrow Smile

JaimesGoldenHand · 28/01/2018 16:42

I'm going to start tomorrow. Ulp. We had already signed up to try a couple of Mindful Chef boxes this week. They are low carb so I'll see if they help. And I'll also take some low carb snacks into work to beat the mid afternoon snackattack.

Shnazzyshot · 28/01/2018 17:50

I'm going to start properly tomorrow too I've been trying to avoid them the last few days. Good luck. Let me know how tomorrow goes!

@xLauraa no apologies needed 😊 it just seems to be like a catch 22 situation that’s why I’m so frustrated. I drink gallons of water I practically squelch when I walk 😁
My new dr(I have moved House) said I’m going to help you! So she seems sincere.
Thanks Shnazzy Brew I will try but tbh I don’t eat lots of carbs already I eat wheat grain bread perhaps once per week, a b potato if I fancy one! I usually live on tuna/chicken salads yogurt and fruit. ☹️
Once I was sitting in the car waiting for my children to come out of school munching on a bunch of grapes a friend came over and held her hand out and said share, she recoiled when I handed her a grape she said oh I thought that you had chocolate! Yeah fat woman in the car eating is always eating choc. It’s so unfair.

ladybird69 · 28/01/2018 18:01

jaimes can I ask what mindful chef is?

BIWI · 28/01/2018 18:02

Come and join the low carb bootcamp thread - low carbing will really help your PCOS, as well as helping you to lose weight.

JaimesGoldenHand · 28/01/2018 20:34

Mindful Chef is one of those outfits that delivers the ingredients for home-cooked meals - you know the exact amounts with herbs, spices etc. DH and I both have unpredictable schedules and I got sick of chucking food out or picking up ready meals on the way home.

This particular one has a low carb focus. It's not cheap but I thought I'd give it a go.

JaimesGoldenHand · 29/01/2018 09:03

Do you mind if I post my food here? It really helps. Or should I start a new thread?

Shnazzyshot · 29/01/2018 11:02

Go for it Jaime. I'd be interested to see what you're having everyday. I'm waiting for my Asda delivery so I will be starting properly with lunch today. What are you planning on having?

ItWentInMyEye · 29/01/2018 11:18

Hi, I have PCOS but not on any medication as my hormone levels aren't high enough yet apparently. I've been looking for a thread for PCOS but not TTC but I can't find any, mind if I join in here? I need to lose about 3 or 4 stone and currently trying slimming world combined with lower carb and adding healthy fats like avocado in which are synned usually.

JaimesGoldenHand · 29/01/2018 12:19

Breakfast- boiled egg, 0% Greek yoghurt with dried fruit - we didn't have any fresh as we get our delivery today.

I'm now quite hungry but not starving.

I avoided having a coffee this morning, partly for the lactose effect and partly because it always tempts me to have cake!

Lunch - will see what's on in the canteen but try to load up with protein and veg and probably have another natural yogurt and some fruit afterwards. Or I might have some Bircher muesli as my Doc said that unrefined porridge oats are low GI and also good at lowering cholesterol (mine is high).
