Anyone know how many calories get burnt during exercise?

I was just wondering if anyone knew a rough guide as to what different sorts of exercise, eg jogging, swimming, walking etc, burnt how many calories per 10mins, 30mins or hour possibly? I presume a guide could only be an estimate depending upon how demanding a particular exercise is to the individual?

Is there also a way of knowing approximately how many calories need to be burnt through exercise to lose one pound (assumming a person ate the exact 2,000 cals per day just to get up, work, etc and wasn't on a diet as such)???

i think this is a complex issue as the more you exercise, the faster you burn calories all the time, cos metabolism increases. also, muscle mass burns more calories than fat.

the 2000 calories equals 1 lb is a very blunt instrument - your body doesn't count calories in and out! just build up gradually and concentrate on your fitness - you'll lose weight more effectively that way

here endeth the lesson!!

Can't remember numbers off top of my head but when I did WeightWatchers they gave points to different exercises. Like if you did 30 minutes high level aerobics then you got 4 bonus points. You could try their website www.weightwatchers.co.uk

Thanx Nickytwotimes and you're right of course - was just in the need of some potential knowledge that would keep me motivated!!! You know like, 'Oooh, 10 more mins of this jog and I'll have burnt XXX cals!' type of thing!!!

Thanx Chilledmama. I've still got my Bonus Points exercise calculator from when I did WW (I'm trying Rosemary Conley now) but have resisted temptation from looking what bonus points the exercise done would have earned me with WW - as I'd reach for that Kitkat when I knew I'd earned 2 points!!!
