If you’re vegetarian or vegan, and losing weight, what are you doing/eating?

I eat a mostly vegan diet for environmental and ethical reasons, some dairy or fish if I eat out but largely vegan day to day. I need to lose about two stone but finding it hard, and in need of ideas of what to eat day to day. The only times I’ve been able lose weight in the past we’re on diets of basically fish, eggs and veg and I’m feeling compelled to go back to that but I really don’t want to. Any ideas would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

Can you share your typical day (type of food and quantity)? Do you exercise? Drink alcohol or sugary soft drinks? Maybe then people will be able to spot some modifications that could help.

I’ve recently switched to mainly a vegan diet. I think if you rely on a lot of bread/ wheat then weight doesn’t come off. I lose weight when I cut it out.

I always have a smoothie in the morning, either -

  • Apple, banana, frozen Berries, Almond milk and muesli
  • Or Cucumber, Apple, Spinach, frozen pineapple and Almond milk

If still peckish after that I have wholegrain toast with Peanut Butter

For lunch I almost always have soup and avocado on toast

    For dinners -
  • Tofu curry
  • Vegan sausages, mash and veg
  • dahl with spuds and brocolli
  • Sweet potato and black Bean burgers
  • Roast veg with Cous Cous or quinoa

At the weekend I tend to get a Greek takeaway (Hummus, tabbouleh, dolmades, Pitta bread etc), a curry, or papa John's with no cheese :)

Also each night I have 2 pieces (around 80g) of vegan chocolate.

no one got back to you! How mean.
I'm vegetarian and have lost 3 stone by repeated cycles of the Blood Sugar Diet. I exercise quite a lot but that is not for weight loss, I'm trying to get fitter too.

I think your smoothies for breakfast are probably quite calorific, it is generally better to eat the whole fruit than blitz it in this way. Toast and peanut butter will be mega calories.
I have either one poached egg on a bed of spinach or berry fruits with 100gr of natural yoghurt and 5 almonds for breakfast.
Your lunch maybe OK but you should calorie check it to be sure, even if you don't routinely calorie count. It might be better to put the avocado in some salad and have 30gr cheese or some quorn slices with it.
Your evening meal again looks quite carb heavy - run it through the calculator and see - impossible to tell without weights. If you want to lose weight really any sort of takeaway is not good news. It can be done but you would need to seriously compromise elsewhere.
I've just noticed the chocolate - 80 gr I calculate as 404 calories - more than most meals for dieters.
Even if you don't want to calorie count I think you should check form one of the many web sites that will calculate how many calories you need to stay the same weight and reduce your calories from food to somewhere between 3500 and 7000 below this to give you a 1 lb or 2lb weight loss a week. I snack on celery sticks and blueberries, not much fun but then weighing 3stone less is worth it. I hope you get some more replies.

I'm finding it tricky. I stopped eating meat earlier this year and am definitely eating many more carbs, which isn't helping my weight/blood sugar. It's the same if I eat bread/ pasta/rice/oats/potatoes.

Calorie count, portion control and exercise.
Put simply, eat less move more .
Lost more than 4 stone over 2 years doing it slowly and it’s staying off, so a complete lifestyle change and re educating myself.

Never spent a penny on any classes or shakes.
