Spent the weekend with slim people and I now see why I'm overweight

ChristmasTreeLight · 03/12/2017 17:07

After having spent the weekend with slim people, it appears that they:

a) don't need as much food to feel full,
I couldn't believe that after X amount of food, they were full - I could have happily carried on eating.

b) can go much longer between meals without eating,
At one point in the afternoon, I was ready to gnaw my arm off, I asked if anyone wanted to stop for a snack (thinking they'd be starving) but no, they were happy to keep going

c) don't crave sweet stuff in the way I do.
I I need sweet things as pudding, I was almost desperate for some chocolate, whereas again they just did not seem to feel that urge.

I am a size 14 and they are 8-10 and now I can see why. It's led me to wonder is it something innate, something physical? Are you just born like that, not to have the appetite or the sweet tooth? Am I simply fighting a losing battle in the vain dream of being a size 10 one day?

Hmm

Haha! A lot of people forget to take height into consideration Running Grin

I always think of my neighbour on threads like this. She's 4ft 11" and sometimes size 2 shoes are too big for her.

She would be well into the obese category if she went from a size 6 (which is still mostly very loose on her) to a size 14.

BeyondAssignation · 12/12/2017 10:07

I understand Snow, I was just explaining why I could see where running was coming from :)

SnowGlitter · 12/12/2017 10:08

Sorry Beyond Smile

Although running did get the height thing or she wouldn't have included her own height in her post.

You’re saying that over eating and under exercising is as addictive as nicotine if you’re saying it is as hard as gicinfup cigarettes

No that's not what I said at all. Of course smoking is more addictive.

I was trying to point out that a) it's not necessarily that helpful for a person who's never had a problem with their weight to say "Well I'm slim and I don't find it hard to eat healthily and do exercise!" And yet some slim people make exactly that kind of unhelpful remark. Whereas I would never say to a smoker "Well I find it perfectly easy to not smoke!"

And b) that one of the hard things about reforming your eating habits is that you can't avoid food altogether!

Wishingandwaiting · 12/12/2017 11:19

There you go again. Comparing over eating with smoking

Wishingandwaiting · 12/12/2017 11:21

And yes you can’t avoid food. But there are SO many gorgeous healthy options out there. It’s not like junk food OR tasteless horrible food is the dilemma.

Own it. That’s my point. Once you do, you’ll be away.

formerbabe · 12/12/2017 11:25

I think it really upsets some people that there are women out there who don't loathe themselves.

SnowGlitter · 12/12/2017 11:31

I think you are right.

Ta1kinPeace · 12/12/2017 12:55

Clothes sizes are just a random number.

People who exercise self restraint will be leaner.
Lean can be measured in body fat percantage (using a Boditrax machine)
Lean can be approximated with BMI
Lean can be approximated with height / waist ratio

Build allows "Lean" to vary massively
some 5'5" people are lean with a BMI of 19, others with a BMI of 23
not many will be lean above that.

The goal for long term health is LEAN
as that reduces the chance of Type 3 Diabetes (also known as Alzheimers )

BeyondAssignation · 12/12/2017 14:11

Are we not allowed to mention smoking when discussing addictive food?

I found quitting smoking a doddle compared to quitting junk food!

TheHolidayArmadillo · 12/12/2017 15:01

Yeah a size 14 will be overweight, or even obese, for some women who are shorter. I'm also 5' 9". When I weigh 10 stone I'm closer to a size 10 than a size 12, and it's verging on the "too slim" for my frame (broad shoulders, broad ribs, long legs compared to torso). A size 6 would be horrific on me. But it's perfectly healthy looking on my sister who is 5' 4".

showersinger · 12/12/2017 15:05

well i find it perfectly easy not to smoke
I said that. To my sister who returned to smoking after pregnancy. She said "it's too difficult for anyone". So that's the answer she deserved. And I also wanted to show her how stupid something like that was, quitting during pregnancy and then start again when you've actually managed to stop. I could've killed her.

Gammeldragz · 12/12/2017 16:22

Have read the whole thread now, very interesting.
2017 has been my weight loss year. I have lost weight before but always gave up before I made it to 'slim' and then put more back on than ever before.
I gave up sugar and processed carbs in January. Started with the 'blood sugar diet' then went on to just low carb high fat. The difference it made to my hunger and cravings has been astounding. I really notice it if I have a carby day I will be so much hungrier the next day or two and crave carbs. But I recognise it now and don't give in as I know it will gonaway in a few days.
I don't tend to eat breakfast now as I'm not usually hungry for it, but if I am I will eat. Usually I have lunch and dinner or brunch and dinner. So have gravitated naturally towards 16:8 without trying. Don't tend to snack as not hungry and most are off limits anyway as they tend to be carby. I have nuts, cheese or peanut butter if I'm hungry but too near to mealtimes for an actual meal.
I feel so much better (and have lost 45lbs) and plan to continue this as my way of eating for life. I will have potatoes again but not pasta/bread as they make me too bloated now. Realised I was just permanently bloated and now I like not feeling like that. Hunger feels different now too, not so urgent and totally bearable.

running I'm only an inch taller at 5'10" and I'm a size 14 at 12 stone. BMI is 24 so technically not overweight but I'd like to lose another stone and a half (vanity really) as I still feel fat and would rather be 10-12. We are all such different shapes...

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/12/2017 17:41

There isn't anything wrong with someone saying they feel oversight at X clothes size, because some people will be overweight at that size. If that doesn't apply to you, then why take offence? Especially when you know that that body shape isn't the same as yours.

This is a discussion forum, and if people find it hard to hear that a, say, 5'2" person personally feels overweight at size 14, then it might best to hide the thread.

fishonabicycle · 13/12/2017 19:34

In my opinion - it's eating the highly processed foods that have tons of calories but little nutritional value (so however much you eat of them, your body is still craving nourishment and wants more).

LaLaLanded · 13/12/2017 20:08

Gammeldragz - hello! Fellow keto/Lchf follower here.

I had the same experience as you - I never feel the ‘urgency’ of hunger. Yes I’m hungry sometimes but it isn’t compulsive. It’s also the only ‘diet’ I’ve ever done where I can eat a sensible amount of calories (1800 or so) and maintain weight.

I’ve been keto for over a year and in maintenance at 9.5 stone (small bone structure) for about 9 months of that. No intention of going back to carbs. It’s not worth it - weight aside, the energy and balanced mental positivity I feel on keto is a huge bonus.

beela · 13/12/2017 21:16

Really interesting thread. Thanks op.

JumpingintoLCHF · 13/12/2017 21:18

No intention of going back to carbs. It’s not worth it
Just how I feel. I realised thst pasta and rice and potatoes are not the really tasty part of the meal.

Had our work Christmas dinner this evening and I sat next to the slimmest member of staff. Made me think of this thread. She had ordered a starter and a main, ate only half the starter because she didn't love it, ate most of her main and didn't have a dessert. There were after 8 mints in abundance on the table during coffee and she didn't even look at them. Previously I would have knocked back every crumb of my 3 courses and half the after 8s. This may explain why I'm overweight (although have lost 17lb on the bootcamp) and she's about as big as a leaf.

drfostersbra · 13/12/2017 22:23

This thread is really interesting, I have lost over a stone in 10 weeks by just going down to three nutritious meals a day without snacks (or if I'm genuinely hungry I have fruit or raw nuts) I'm 10st 7 and looking to get to 10st. I tried no carbing and literally had the shakes I was STARVING!
I'm more aware of carbs now and my intake is definitely lower but I really don't see the point in soup without toast or meat without potatoes.
Moderation really is the key.

MsHarry · 14/12/2017 13:38

jumping I tried the 2 boiled eggs, no toast thing. You were right, full all morning 7 till 12.30! It's inspired me to reduce my carbs and I am only eating 3 meals, no snacks. 1 pound of already and I'm not overweight but nearer my top acceptable(to me) weight than my happy weight.

MsHarry · 14/12/2017 13:39

1 pound off not of!

Ta1kinPeace · 14/12/2017 13:44

I am only eating 3 meals, no snacks.
That is indeed the trick.
I like to eat a BIG supper (and being old and slim only have a TDEE of 1500 calories) so always skip breakfast
but NO SNACKING really is the key

I really don't see the point in soup without toast or meat without potatoes. Moderation really is the key.
Yup, portion control .....

Did everybody see this news story this morning ....
about the growing size of wine glasses

MsHarry · 14/12/2017 14:19

Yes I saw that Talk and what I dislike is when you order a glass of wine and you are automatically poured a large unless you specify. One barman said it was company policy, I swiftly told him I didn't think the Police would accept that as a reason for being over the limit and to get me a small one please!

MsHarry · 14/12/2017 14:20

Also I heard Michael Ball talking of his mega weight loss since the summer and he said he'd worked with Amelia Freer and the and habit he sticks to is 5 hours between eating anything! People need convincing that WE DO NOT NEED SNACKS!

JumpingintoLCHF · 14/12/2017 14:36

MsHarry thats brilliant. Definitely give it a go. Makes a huge difference.
