Healthier eating advice - Is this too much food per day

I'm 5 foot 8 and wear size 18. I'd always been very slim and verging on underweight until about 5 years ago. I wore size 10/12 before. I've always had a huge appetite. People wondered how I stayed slim.

I was happy at size 14. I felt I had a bit of flesh on my bones. My parents made unflattering comments but I ignored them. They have weird food issues and I felt starved by them as a child.

Now at a size 18, I am determined to lose weight as I feel insecure about the size of my belly. I've cut down on unhealthy food, more fruit and veg, drink plenty of water and reduced snacking. I already get plenty of exercise.

I still have a huge appetite but munch on carrots, cucumber, oranges etc. to fill me up. I drink as well if I'm hungry. I took 5 years to gain the weight so plan to lose it gradually.

This is a general typical day's food.

Breakfast - 2 small slices of toast with thin layer peanut butter or bowl of all bran.

Lunch - tin of mushroom soup, 2 low fat cheese slices on 2 small slices of toast

Dinner - large salad with feta, peppers, red onion, cucumber, tomatoes, olives, lettuce and low fat dressing or walnut and feta salad.

Snacks are oranges, cucumber, carrots etc.

I am happy with my diet. I am seeing a small decrease in my belly and feel healthier. I still have a huge appetite and my family still say I'm overeating. I struggle to eat less. Are they right to criticise?

Olivia - I didn't comment on this thread to get into weird debates with you. You've got no idea what I eat and I can't read your waffle. You spout utter rubbish. I think you like the sound of your own voice a little bit too much

For me I see it as some food are better to eat than others
I prefer less carbs, eggs fill me more than porridge. But my friend is the opposite. We are all individual and what works for one might not work for another
I eat anything provided it's within my calories and am 30lbs down and still losing. Also fasting, I do 14:10 daily

Well I've just had my cheat day yesterday and had home made lasagne, today hasn't been too good as was out shopping and had a sausage roll buy now I'm on a 24 hour fast till seven tomorrow night. On thee plus side even with cheat days once a week I'm down a Jean size in only three weeks on low carb and it's definitely a lifestyle I can keep up

Pickle So you DO realise that some foods are not good for some people. Lean meat is not brilliant for everyone, some people do well with foie gras for instance.

We are all different. Science is changing all the time.

Really well actually, thanks PostNotInHaste.

Cutting out rice, pasta, potato and cutting down on bread has really worked for my bloating. My clothes are looking much better and my snacking between meals has decreased. Getting breakfast sorted has worked well.

I've not lost any weight so far but am feeling much healthier and sleeping better too. I seemed to struggle with concentration at first but that seems to have past.

I am getting more exercise but gradually building it up. The fasting is something I will try when I have less on. At the moment everything is a bit hectic. I'm trying to join a yoga class but as yet haven't managed to fit spare time in with a scheduled class.

My parents have backed off a bit; I kept getting offered snacks when I was last at theirs which is a bit ironic considering their stance on snacking between meals. They were also trying to encourage me to eat a less healthy, heavier main course but then objected to me having a dessert.

I have got the coconut oil but have yet to try it with butter in my morning coffee.

I did a shopping run with a friend, and as normal, she didn't get a single thing from the fruit and veg aisles. It was all ready meals, tins and jars. I didn't say anything but she was very impatient when I was getting my fruit and veg sorted and made a few remarks. I am sure I wasn't being judgemental about her shopping choices but at the till she started moaning about how melon and cucumber were just water and mushrooms were bland and slimy.

She has been helping me in one of my activities later in the week and was very resistant to us bothering to try introducing new foods to young children as it just creates a mess and they never eat it anyway. I was trying to explain that it's about them touching and smelling the food and becoming comfortable with the textures and colours. It was hopeless.

At break-time I've been surrounded by people snacking and felt some pressure to eat along with them. It seems antisocial not too.

I feel that friends and family aren't always fully supportive. I feel a few friends are almost trying to sabotage my healthier lifestyle. I could just be getting a bit paranoid though.

That's a great update Smile I think the dynamics with friends can be complicated. I was highly pissed off at the start when I met with a friend who ordered food but found it hard to accept I didn't want any and was trying really hard to give me half her sandwich.

As I've got smaller I'm the same size as a couple of people and they pull faces if I say I have more to lose. Whether that's because it makes them question their own weight I don't know but I just get on with it. A said with conviction 'No thanks I'm not hungry ' generally does the job but any hint of a waiver and the whole 'oh go on ' starts.

That's exactly how it is! I do have a few friends that are very supportive, whereas a few seem very closed off to any change. Changing from a sandwich to a salad at lunch was met with so much attention and comments.

We were trying to arrange a meal and get together regularly at someones house where we'd take turns to cater. We couldn't do it around everyone's food in tolerances, allergies, dislikes, vegetarianism or other dietary requirements so we gave up.

For me the best way to loose weight:

  1. Large breakfast
  2. Big lunch
  1. VERY SMALL dinner, like salad or light soup

Next morning you wake up you always feel lighter and see a big difference as your waist gets thinner

Well I didn't manage my 24 hours yesterday. I got to 19 hours and someone brought me some lunch in so.i couldn't say no as it's would be rude. Still it was low carb at least, burger, egg, and bacon so I can't complain too much but damn I was sooooo close.

Glad to hear you are doing well though OP. The more you lose the better you will feel and it will further bolster you to do even better.
