Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Just checking in. It's my day 3 today- I've been pretty good but not calorie counted (or rather, calorie counted but it went a bit haywire!) but have pretty much stuck to no pasta, rice, potato, grains or sugar. Have had lots of fruit though which isn't technically 'on plan' -especially very sweet Victoria plums- but my midweek weigh in shows a loss of 3lb which is probably all water, but still. Loss is loss. I'm hoping to stick to my calorie limit today, and for the rest of the week. I'm teetering on the edge of a stone boundary so I would like to be in new lower numbers by next weigh in!

honeyroar · 16/08/2017 08:58

Thenewaver you sound very disciplined! Well done.

Can'tseethewood yes we do fly with different people every time. Occasionally you might know one or two people, but often not. Are you living in Asia? How lovely.

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 09:17

I have been very very low sugar for about 5 years ago.

I'm extremely slim (8 stone 5'7) but I think that's mainly a combo of lots of exercise and good genes rather than lack of sugar because I was this weight pre cutting back hugely on sugar.

For me it is about good skin and internal health.

I promise you that as rhe years pass, sugar will not remotely appeal to you anymore. The children can be having ice creams, biscuits, chocolate and I honestly am not remotely tempted.
I am instead obsessed with fresh steamed veg. Came back from a wedding, where I had a ball of raspberry sorbet for dinner and all I was craving was a huge bowl of fresh broccoli and courgetti!

Stick at it. It will become part of you and eventually be so unappealing to you.

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 09:18

Oh I do have a lot of fruit by the way.

No biscuirs, cakes, ice cream, chocolate, crisps. And very very rarely (maybe 5x a year!) bread and pasta.

I do enjoy the odd can of Diet Coke.

ifigoup · 16/08/2017 12:13

Well done on everyone's victories! I'm doing okay - still sticking to hearty soups for a 350-400 cal lunch. Breakfast is something filling like eggs, peanut butter on toast, Philly on toast, Greek yoghurt etc, and is also when I have my fruit.

As long as I stick to this, I don't worry too much about what dinner is, though I'm trying to keep portion sizes reasonable. I had a large glass of white yesterday after a nightmare day at work, but otherwise haven't had any alcohol.

Small victories: I found a small bag of biccies in my handbag that an old lady had given me for DC, and left them there!

Brownsauceandsausages · 16/08/2017 12:36

Just checking in!

Well done to everyone for grezt progress and efforts made!

I'm still in holiday mode so trying to gradually reduce sugar intake and get fitter (from a woeful zero slug- like state) before return to work and school on 1st September. Eating a good breakfast, skipping lunch but going on two long walks a day. Have succumbed to the office ice cream and toffee though but not every day).

Have also discovered that the significant anniversary for which I am aiming to lose three stone, is in three years not two as previously thought!! Duh!! Determined not to let this be an excuse to slacken off, once I start properly in Sept!

Wishing everyone lots of positive thoughts and resistance to the sweet stuff!

Brownsauceandsausages · 16/08/2017 12:37

Odd ice cream, not office ice cream!!

Brownsauceandsausages · 16/08/2017 12:37

Neither is good though BlushGrin

GoingRogue · 16/08/2017 13:24

Holidayhooray you're the same height as me, but 2.5 stone lighter. Just checked the nhs bmi calculator and you're classified as underweight (17.5).

Each to their own and everything, but I think your relationship with food sounds a little joyless and extreme. Consuming masses of sugar is bad and dangerous I know. But only eating bread or pasta 5 x per year, and not enjoying the occasional (it'll probably be fortnightly - ish for me) sweet treat with your kids sounds dull. Sorry if I've offended you with any of that.

honeyroar · 16/08/2017 14:19

Just having a morning getting organised and doing some cooking for the freezer (butternut soup). I was going through some recipe books, as cooking new things helped when I started in Jan, and I found this recipe in the Aldi sugar free cookbook - looks like it would make a good granola type breakfast..

Tomorrow I quit sugar
Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 14:21

But goingrogue you've just proved my point.

You think of pasta etc as a treat. I don't. I would genuinely prefer a pile of freshly steamed veg and grilled salmon. Followed by plain Greek yoghurt and raspberries. I would take that any day over a packet of biscuits. In fact I would go to bed hungry rather than have the biscuits.

My point is that if you stick st it, your taste buds genuinely change.

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 14:22

No offende taken at all. But you did miss the point.

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 14:33

My menu yesterday

Porridge with blueberries and cinnamon.
Banana
Decaf tea and coffee

Lunch
Huge salad with beetroot. Hot smoked salmon or chicken. Followed Greek yoghurt and raspberries. Decaf coffee

An apple and a nectarine

Dinner
Mound of steam veg, grilled salmon
More Greek yoghurt and fruit
A bowl of blackberries

Decaf tea and a fruit tea

I love my food. Really, no guilt just pleasure

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 14:45

I have a glass of wine occasionally and will eat whatever is out in front of me at dinner parties. However I live in extremely affluent part of the world where most are uber for SAHMs, so more likely to be served kale rather than a chocolate brownie!

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 14:45

Uber fit that should say

GoingRogue · 16/08/2017 14:50

Holidayhooray I really didn't miss your point. And I don't think of bread and pasta as a treat; far from it (did you read my post properly? There is a comma). My boys are 3 and 6, And I have a very fit and healthy husband. Bread and pasta are part of our staple diet. I eat one or both of them most days, and would only ever cut them out for a genuine medical reason.

I'm a Mum. I'm my children's first role model. To eat a completely separate diet from them would be impractical, costly and well...just odd imo. We eat all our meals together (I'm a SAHM) and generally speaking eat the same foods. I'm setting an example to them.

And no, my children would not enjoy smoked salmon and salad, or a mound of steamed veg. A family meal is one we can all enjoy. I would be miserable sitting down with dh and the boys tucking into macaroni cheese and garlic bread for example, and me only having a salad or veg.

The occasional sweet treat I was referring to was a pack of sweets, chocolate bar or bowl of popcorn. Proper treats to me.

GoingRogue · 16/08/2017 14:52

honeyroar you sound organised! I can't read the granola recipe but would like it please...is there any chance you could please type it out when you get a moment?

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 14:59

Fair enough goingrogue

My children do enjoy smoked salmon, mountains of veg etc.

Of course I will also serve them pasta, about once a week, but I don't always eat with them as sometimes prefer to eat later, so no big deal. If I do a packed lunch for them, I will make them a sandwich. They often have toast in the morning.

My mother didn't eat bread or rice. Said it bloated here. Shrug. I didn't think twice about it.

But you say that my relationship with food is joyless. Clearly I disagree and, as it is my relationship, I think I can be fairly confident that I'm correct!

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 15:00

Chocolate, popcorn etc. Proper treats to you. Not for me, at all. Each to their own.

GoingRogue · 16/08/2017 15:07

Oh yes, I agree that everyone is different hence my "each to their own". I also realise that if you completely cut out sugar then of course your taste buds will change.

I said I thought your relationship with food sounded joyless, not you. Everyone does whatever makes them happy Smile

GoingRogue · 16/08/2017 15:08

But you're still nearly half a stone under the recommended healthy weight by the way. Now that IS fact...

Tomorrow I quit sugar
Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 15:09

Would you honestly look at what I ate yesterday and think "joyless and extreme" and that I was setting a poor example to my children?
Genuine question

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 15:10

Oh I know I am underweight! Been underweight all my life. I was but a whisper of a child, as are my siblings.
I exercise hard and eat very well, plus genes means that I am very slim.

Holidayhooray · 16/08/2017 15:14

This is me.

Do I look shockingly underweight to you?!

Tomorrow I quit sugar
GoingRogue · 16/08/2017 15:29

Shockingly? No. Who said shockingly? I was merely stating fact.

Round of applause for:

  1. I live in extremely affluent part of the world
  2. I exercise hard and eat very well, plus genes means that I am very slim.
  3. My childrendoenjoy smoked salmon, mountains of veg btw.

I'm just lazy, fat commoner with poor genes and picky eaters Sad
