Tomorrow I quit sugar

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

When pregnant? I definitely need to give it a go. Even water etc sets it off though, yesterday I was fine though so no rhyme or reason. Can't be arsed to ask doc for a prescription though (rennies etc don't work) so if it's just a case of cutting out sugar I should try it. Have been trying for my whole life though Grin

BendydickCuminsnatch · 12/08/2017 12:22

Sorry, that was a lot of 'though's.

honeyroar · 12/08/2017 12:45

No I wasn't pregnant.

Sophster1978 · 12/08/2017 13:21

Overcome (sorry don't know how to make it bold...) i struggle with breakfast too, in the detox book there's a recipe for coconutty granola that's sugar free and nice, I have it with Greek yoghurt, it's really filling. Happy to share the recipe if you'd like it

A can of soda water is good too for hot days.

Sophster1978 · 12/08/2017 13:49

Hope you can see that? I put oats in but left the syrup stuff out!

Tomorrow I quit sugar
msrisotto · 12/08/2017 18:40

Hi, so I think I made it through the week! DH has bough a box of French Fancies for tonight though which I am so Envy about.

humanfemale · 12/08/2017 19:26

Another day done! I ate two mini pizzas and a slice of savoury mozzarella and basil cake (genuis btw) at a party but no sweets or delicious cake. My DH has a massive bag of minstrels for later 😑

GoingRogue · 12/08/2017 20:22

Whoever posted about a lot of it being connection/association is SO right. I def always have popcorn (and wine!) When watching a film. Always want cake or biscuits with my tea.

I've had a good first day. Easing myself in slowly tho, and know I won't be able to go hard-core and give up things like fruit and pasta. I have always had a massive appetite.

B: Weetabix and banana
L: pepper and cheese omelette with a Warburtons thin and salad. Yoghurt and strawberries
D: pasta bolognese. Apple, pear and last of my low-fat yoghurt for pudding.

It's so rare for me to go a whole day with no snacks, and no treats. Not gonna lie, I feel deprived. I'm lucky in that dh doesn't have a sweet tooth, so won't sit next to me tonight tucking into Minstrels or French fancies ! (I actually think that's rather unsupportive haha). I have had 4 x cups of tea, each with 1/2 teaspoon sugar. I know that needs to go.

Tomorrow will be hard as out for a birthday lunch for a relative. I'd usually have half a coke, pudding etc...it's not fair that everyone around me is thin and healthy ! If they have dessert tomorrow I know I'll cave. But as long as the rest of the day is good I'll be chuffed.

Now, what to have as my Sat night treat whilst watching a film? I have sweet popcorn and lots of chocolate biscuits in the cupboard shouting my name. Think I'll have some hummus and breadsticks instead.

OuchBollocks · 12/08/2017 20:25

HOORAY to lots of sugar quitting success!!!
BOO to unhelpful husbands, mine is the same, well not right now as he's at work but in general, he has a terrible sweet tooth.

My dh likes to drink lovely ice-cold cider or wine most nights...he is very slim, runs 3 x per week, nice skin etc. If I didn't love him, I would hate him! Grin Will ask him to stick to beer from now on as I don't like it.

GoingRogue · 12/08/2017 20:46

Quick question. With packaged foods, what would you call "low sugar"? Less than 10g per 100g? My Mum used to say if there was less than 5g of fat per 100g it was classed as low-fat (not sure how true that is).

OuchBollocks · 12/08/2017 20:49

I think your mum was right about the fat thing. I think the I Quit Sugar people say to avoid anything with 6g sugar per 100g or more.

I'd be inclined to look at the ingredients to see if they've added sugar above what is naturally occurring.

bringmelaughter · 12/08/2017 21:01

I'm feeling good today. Still on pasta, etc but have totally managed to avoid processed sugary things.

I really think this thread is helping as I sort of feel accountable.

koalab · 12/08/2017 21:05

I am koalab and I am addicted to sugar Blush. My 8month old has been really struggling with teething and has been waking every 1-2hours. My response to the lack of sleep has been to seek out sugary treats. But I know this is making me feel a million times worse and I've put on half a stone. I already had 2 stone to lose. I've just spoken to DP and he's in on it too which should make things easier.

Well done everyone so far and thanks for the inspiration!

Littlepig8834 · 12/08/2017 21:23

I've been a bit shit today, not really had a proper meal as I've been out and about. Went to a food fair this morning, did buy a brownie but haven't ate it yet. Was in such a grump as there was so much I wanted but was trying to be strong. I've been picking at things, nothing too bad, but also nothing of great nutrition.

I've been going on the rule of 5g or less per 100g is ok, but I think I've made this figure up myself, prob based it on the low fat thing!!

honeyroar · 13/08/2017 02:48

I look for under 5g too. It's amazing how much sugar there is everywhere. Cereals are terrible! Tom sauce, packet mixes even. Once you start checking you realise it's better to try and make things from scratch.

Cantseethewoods · 13/08/2017 06:38

I agree but at the same time I think it's important to keep it in perspective. A mars bar has 21g of sugar, 100g of Ragu pasta sauce has 7g per 100g, some of which will be naturally occurring in the tomatoes. 80% of sugar could probably be eliminated from most people's diets by just cutting out the obvious- sweets, biscuits, cake, pizza, sweetened drinks. If you get too strict then it's inevitable that you'll start counting failures rather than successes.

Cantseethewoods · 13/08/2017 06:39

I don t know why I wrote pizza.

GoingRogue · 13/08/2017 07:16

OvercomeByGravity we'll done on the salads!

Cantseethewoods I think if I go too strict I'll fail. I'm a realist/everything in moderation type person. Plus I like to cook the same meal for everyone in the house and eat pretty much the same things as my 3 and 6 year olds. Will be easier when they're teens and more self sufficient. Will aim for less than 6g per sugar per 100g, but if it's something that is relatively healthy and I'm only having a small amount and happens to have 10g-ish I won't beat myself up about it.

I'm going to start by cutting out all obvious sugar like you say. Have to try not to replace it with copious amounts of cheese Wink
