Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Day one done! It was pretty hard - had birthdays this weekend and there is a lot of crap in the house. I'm going to get DH to take it into work with him tomorrow so it's gonnnnnne! 👏🏻

aayla · 09/08/2017 21:51

I started this yesterday as well. I've found it's a good way to lose weight in the past, once I get into it.
I've put on loads of weight this year though (menopause) so I'm really hoping that going sugar free helps to shift a few pounds.

Spottyparrot99 · 10/08/2017 13:15

Half way through day 1. Shouldn't have started this in the summer holidays! The dc have delicious ice creams Envy I reallllllllly want some!

pandapop17 · 10/08/2017 13:37

Need to confess my crapness. I had some ice cream yesterday. I went out for dinner to celebrate parents anniversary. Everyone was having pudding and I caved in. I didn't even really want it but I can't cope with not doing the same as everyone. Its pathetic i know but I hate attention and didn't want to tell everyone about giving up sugar. I need to stop being such a baby! Back in the wagon today. Just had a yummy home made lentil soup for lunch. I had porridge with unsweetened soy milk for breakfast.

Spottyparrot99 · 10/08/2017 13:45

Never thought this would be so hard! Never mind panda pops - that was yesterday and sounds like you're doing great today!

OuchBollocks · 10/08/2017 16:02

Never mind pandapop, today is another day and at least you didn't go full mad and are back at it :)

I was sorely tempted by the cake when some friends and I had an unplanned pitstop in a little cafe today, but I'm on a fast day (doing 5:2 diet) so it's a double no! Home with a miso soup feeling virtuous Halo Grin

Thanks, I find it easy when at home and work but when eating with others I find it hard. Need to stick to my convictions next time!

oolaroola · 10/08/2017 17:27

Can I join in please - I am a hopeless addict - I've tried many times before to quit with variable success.
I guess I eat a lot less than before but fall off the wagon on awful binges.
I'm going to try and avoid all the obvious sugary crap and dried fruit except in substitution for a few recipes like energy balls etc but only very infrequently. I thought if I had these and granola with a teeny bit of maple syrup very occasionally instead of my usual week long chocolate/biscuits spectaculars then I'd be happy with that.
I find that if I'm eating white bread/rice/pasta my sugar cravings are awful so am going to exclude them also. Think I will allow myself brown rice and wholemeal bread (sourdough) occasionally.
I have almost completed two days (apart from the small bit of dried mango) and I have a terrible headache to show for it all! Hopefully feel better tomorrow.
I have an auto-immune arthritis which really does fare better when I manage to be sugar free so have a big incentive.

Spottyparrot99 · 10/08/2017 19:40

What's everyone having for their sugar free tea? I'm having a cocnut milk Quorn curry ( from scratch, no delicious sugary jar-sob) then maybe a little bit of fruit with yogurt.

OuchBollocks · 10/08/2017 19:51

We had cod fishcakes and lots of steamed veg (400 cal, FD dinner). Just ok to be honest. Bought the fishcakes in the coop cos I couldn't be bothered proper cooking but kind of wish I'd roasted salmon instead.

oolaroola I've heard that sugar is dreadful for arthritis. Apparently it acts as an inflammatory? That's another reason I'm quitting, I have a very stiff swollen ankle 6 months after a bad injury, I'm hoping cutting out the white stuff will help with the swelling a bit. Good luck!

Made it through my day. Am away on hols but avoided pudding, sugar in tea and random cake through day.

Mostly felt really positive except when family had tiffin and shortbread . I love those!!!

Am sticking to hot drinks when everyone's having pudding or cake.

humanfemale · 10/08/2017 21:15

Day 2 done! There were posh biscuits out on the table at work all day and I didn't have one.

Hope you're all getting on fine 😊

biscuitbadger · 11/08/2017 08:08

I might also join you.

I have given up sugar for a few months at a time in the past, but always backslide/rebel at some point.

When I cut out the sugary crap it's really hard to start with, and then I start to lose a bit of weight and I sleep better and feel more energetic and less grumpy. I agree with a pp that it gets easier because sweet stuff starts tasting really sickly.

But so far it's only ever lasted a few months before I have 'just one chocolate bar' because I feel ill or stressed, and then I get a taste for it again and end up back where I started.

It seems to have to be an all or nothing approach for me.

OuchBollocks · 11/08/2017 09:16

Well done humanfemale and bringmelaughter, inspirational resolve. I'm genuinely impressed.

Hello biscuitbadger. I'm the same, no such thing as 'just the one'. Good luck!

I think I might sneak in here if I may?
Absolutely addicted to sugar.
I need to go cold turkey as I too am incapable of having just a bit.
It's reached the point where I don't even enjoy what I'm eating as i inhale it so quickly.
I think I may start with cutting out processed, aiming for 7 days and see how I get on!
So far I have had coffee...with no sugar. It's a start Grin

Cantseethewoods · 11/08/2017 09:28

I'll lurk if you dont mind. Cutting down sugar and crap carbs for health/ diet quality reasons rather than weight, although am trying to lose the c.3kg i put on this year. Tbh, there are a lot of low hanging fruit (excuse the pun) like the family bag of licorice allsorts/ 100g bar of chocolate that I quite often mainline in the afternoons at work. Plus wine..............lots of wine........... Home not so much of an issue as I just dont buy biscuits/ cake/sweets etc, but it's going out or home in the evenings (wine) and work (candy and chocolate) that are the issues.

Dh and I have made a pact that we're only drinking at weekends till christmas.

pandapop17 · 11/08/2017 09:35

I know it's only 9:30am but I am already thinking about this eve. DH and I usually share a bar of choc. Staying strong on a Friday is going to be hard! He wants to give it up as well so hopefully together we can stay strong Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/08/2017 10:12

Pandapop you could try doing a bit of visualisation- every time you think of the chocolate imagine it has bugs crawling on it, or that you've just dropped it on a filthy floor. Sounds weird but it really does help cravings. Or failing that, you could get some very strong cheese or olives or something instead so that if you crave chocolate you eat that instead and it takes the craving away?

Littlepig8834 · 11/08/2017 11:59

So far, so good. SIL bought some chocs around last night, she has a surplus being due to being a teacher and having lots of boxes given to her.

I didn't have any, this was major for me as I love chocolate! I did have brown rice for tea, but only a small portion.

I'm struggling with cutting down on fruit though, I'm so used to just grabbing an apple and not thinking about the sugar content, I know it's not the worst type of sugar but I need to think about reducing fruit and upping veg!!

OuchBollocks · 11/08/2017 12:12

littlepig are you going full on low carb? I'm not quite ready for that! My understanding re fruit is that a bit is fine, especially native fruits like apples and berries, as the fibre goes some way to counteracting the sugar spike plus it's hard to inhale a apple the way one would a chocolate bar. I think tropical fruits (mango, pineapple etc) are more sugary and better avoided.

OP posts:
Littlepig8834 · 11/08/2017 12:34

@OuchBollocks not full on low carb, just trying to choose veg over fruit. I could never go full on, I love potatoes too much! I must admit that I've been less bloated since looking at sugar content and also shocked at how much sugar is in stuff, there are so many items where's it's the second or third ingredient yet you wouldn't think it!

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia earlier this year and it was suggested that I should look at lowering my sugar content as it could help.

pandapop17 · 11/08/2017 12:34

Thanks for the tips. I definitely need to train myself to think about chocolate in a different way. When I am being good I find that drinking herbal tea in the evening helps. Or I try occupy my hands by painting my nails! I am trying to loose weight as well so won't to avoid snacking in the evening all together Smile

honeyroar · 11/08/2017 14:59

Hello all. Please may I join you?

I started a no sugar or processed food diet mid January, and had lost 1 and 3/4 stones and two dress sizes by the end of June. I found it very easy. But it was my birthday at the end of June so we had a couple of days out and a weekend away, then my husband came with me on two work trips to lovely places and we ate/drank a lot, so I've kind of lost my halo/mojo for the last six weeks. I need to pick up the reins again, I've another two stones to lose.

When I was being good and doing well I ate TONS of (fresh not dried or juiced) fruit every day and changed everything to full fat. My treat that I adored and that really filled me up was grapes/berries with full fat yoghurt. I still ate loads of carbs too, just homemade, healthy food.

TheChampagneGalop · 11/08/2017 15:02

Hi everyone. I've decided to quit sugar for at least 1-3 months to break my habits of eating it so often. Currently on day 15 and proud Smile
But I have eaten 85-92% cacao chocolate. It was really tough for a while but I feel much better now. So hang in there if you've just started out and it's tough!
My goal is to be able to eat just one piece of cake at parties and such in the future but we'll see...
