Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

overcome today sounds like a better day. The walk should be invigorating, I hope.

I've stayed off sugar apart from a tiny bit of jam but I cannot stop eating.

I had a small bit of carrot cake today, but in my defence, it was during the course of a 6 hour fell walk!

Justchillaxing · 06/11/2017 01:11

Does anyone mind me posting my food diary here? I could start another thread otherwise. It helps me to feel accountable.

Yesterday I had omelette for lunch and steak with a few chips and fried mushrooms for dinner. I couldn't finish the chips Smile

Today I had bacon and eggs for lunch and plaice and fried cabbage with a little rice with sweet and sour sauce for dinner. A small of a few cashew nuts.

Cantseethewoods · 06/11/2017 10:13

Not at all- I mostly just post food diaries. If I go quiet and don't post you know it was terrible Grin

Today

B: Protein shake, 2 cups of tea.
L: 2 boiled eggs, vegetables, fruit, hummus, Diet Coke.
S: 1 babybel
D: black bean chilli and rice. Glass wine.

OuchBollocks · 06/11/2017 13:32

Not a great day for me. Maybe because I had muesli for breakfast... but I've been hungry all day and no time to eat properly so snacked all day. . A bag of crisps, some nuts..lunch was just soup so not filling either. Dinner was plaice with fried cabbage and a tiny bit of rice ... just now I have into my cravings and had a chocolate biscuit. Of course I just want more! I'm going to try and knock it on the head and not have something else stupid but maybe have something filling instead.

Eolian · 07/11/2017 12:30

I'm finding that my desire for sweet things has really reduced already.

Today: wholemeal sourdough toast with unsweetened peanut butter

Homemade bacon and red lentil soup and a bit of chicken and salad. (No bread - I'm trying not to have bread at both breakfast and lunch time!)

Probably an apple as an afternoon snack.

Dinner will be pork stir fry and rice or noodles.

Justchillaxing · 07/11/2017 13:48

I love Whole Earth peanut butter but if I start I can't stop eating it Blush

Cantseethewoods · 08/11/2017 12:54

Still here. Had to have a bit of a word with myself after the weekend. Was getting very sloppy.

B: 2 cups of tea, avocado and tomato on rye bread
L: Black bean chilli and rice, cut up pineapple
D: vegetable (pepper and spinach) and chorizo frittata and salad, glass of wine.

Re. peanut butter I weaned the kids off Skippy and onto Meridian. I can't stand the stuff (I long for Skippy still) but they'll eat it so eco-win!

OuchBollocks · 08/11/2017 15:40

I love meridian peanut butter.

I was in a&e with the baby who was having breathing difficulties in the wee hours. He's fine (miraculous recovery, made me look like a tit) but I'm shattered and starving.

Good Luck with your efforts to quit sugar. Here are some tips from my end to make it easier for you.

Remember, you need to control your Sugar eating habit only for your waking hours. So, sleep for longer duration say 10 hrs. So, that you need to control only for 14 hrs. Trick your mind by thinking about anything creative or work related stuff. This way you will keep your head away from Sugary stuffs. Also, don't think of the word "Sugar"or "Sweet" :-)

Most importantly, focus on cutting down for small intervals. So, if you cut down for 5 hrs since you wake up is good. What matters is you should NOT think of Sugar in those hours. At some point you will stop checking the duration :) Don't set big goals and most importantly don't hurt yourself if it doesnt work.

Justchillaxing · 09/11/2017 23:48

I've had a bad couple of days. Eaten lots of crap and feel really ill.

The problem is I don't know what to eat. Anything with wheat and lactose aggravates my IBS. I don't really like eggs. I like meat but it hurts my teeth (gets stuck in gaps and is impossible to remove and causes pain). I feel like the only thing I can eat is soup! I'm depressed and struggle to cook. And on a low budget. All quick and easy foods are carb based it seems.

Today it all seems impossible Sad

Sorry for the rant.

Cantseethewoods · 10/11/2017 06:40

ouch glad your little one rallied.

just That is tough. Can you eat meat if it's minced like cottage pie or lasagna? That might be easier, or just floss like a maniac ( I know, I never do either Grin). How about fish? (tinned tuna and salmon are cheap). Does sheep/goat cheese still impact your IBS or might that be an option? Feta is quite versatile I find and because it's salty it jazzes up bland food like brown rice quite well- I add chopped red pepper and chopped spinach (can use frozen). I eat quite a lot of vegan food and so a fair amount of pulses which are cheap. Black bean chilli from the BBC Good food website is yummy- just leave the sugar out and their chickpea and tomato curry is nice too.

Yesterday

B: Protein shake
L: 2 babybel, chopped up vegetables with hummous, chopped pineapple
S: latte
D: leftover frittata with salad, 2 Blush glasses wine.

Yes I can eat minced meat but get bored of the options .. plus without carbs it's boring. I eat cottage pie. No lasagne because of wheat in pasta.

I like white rice and jacket potatoes.

It's just I haven't the inclination to cook at the moment and easy food seems to be very carby.

I like white fish but hate sardines.

I drink a little lactofree milk and eat a little lactofree cheese.

If I could I'd live off sandwiches, toast and cereal. It's easy and cheap.

Spicy food like chilli and curry cause problems too. As do beans.

The problem teeth are at the back and I can't reach to floss.

Cantseethewoods · 11/11/2017 02:13

My friend makes lasagne using butternut squash sheets for pasta. She buys it ready sliced in Tesco coz ain't nobody got time to slice a butternut squash like that.

Re flossing, it involves money but have you tried one of those water spray ones? They basically jet wash your teeth.

Anyway, cheer yourself up on the basis that your yesterday cannot be as bad as mine. Was all fine until lunch and then I ate 2 of those Alpen light bars in the afternoon which are basically made of dust and sugar. Then for dinner I had about 8 glasses of wine and some Pringles. Weirdly, today I feel like absolute crap.

Justchillaxing · 11/11/2017 05:00

I'll look into those thanks.

Today I felt totally pants so all I've had is a jacket potato, a packet of ready salted crisps and some rice. Not great but all I could stomach.

ferriswheel · 11/11/2017 06:05

Noofly

I love the dump the junk sugar idea

I might be able to cope with that.

OuchBollocks · 11/11/2017 07:22

just how about frozen sweet potato mash with a bit of poached cod? Peanut butter on sliced apple, banana 'ice cream' - frozen blended banana, chicken thigh slow cooked in tomatoes and stock so it's literally falling apart and doesn't need chewing?

OP posts:
Justchillaxing · 12/11/2017 01:09

Sweet potato mash is lovely and I like white fish Smile I'm not keen on chicken with bones, prefer chicken breast but can cook that in the slow cooker until tender.

I haven't eaten banana for ages because it's so sweet.

I feel a bit better now but I've eaten pure white carbs today - a slice of white toast, some white rice and some Ritz crackers. Hopefully I'll be back to normal tomorrow as can eat healthily again. Sunday dinner at the in laws tomorrow but Monday I'll make a shepherds pie.

OuchBollocks · 12/11/2017 09:30

I love a Sunday dinner. We'll do roast chicken thighs, Auntie bessie roasties, stuffing (bought) and lots of veg for an easy almost-roast tonight. Yum yum.

just you can get de boned thigh fillets in the supermarket, I find them less chewy than the breast but that's just me maybe. Tbh I reckon slow cooking will be your friend, most meat will fall apart after slow cooking, and it's easy to bung in whatever veg doesn't upset your ibs. Then serve with sweet potato/rice/normal potato/whatever.

Not much to report other than I’m allowed back to the gym tomorrow after 7 weeks off. Weirdly excited. Sure that won’t last. Ha ha.

honeyroar · 13/11/2017 20:12

Hello everyone. Glad to read youre all doing well. I'm still having a tough time with my mum - two months since the first time, and with lots of issues inbetween, we ended up in an ambulance with flashing lights and spent another night un resuss in A&E. Ive managed to put on 9lbs and almost go up a dress size due to reverting to sugar fixes and not being able to eat meals at the right times. I'm prey yet fed up about it - I'm now down to only having lost a stone, when I'd been well on my way to two. I've really got to pick it up again - I'm knackered, but I don't think eating badly is helping, and this issue with mum sounds like it's going to be a long haul..

Sorry for the essay!
