Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Dull dull day. Gave the dc free reign on the Halloween spoils to get it gone. Stayed away from MIL’s Cadbury’s gift. I love MIL but she’s terrible for my waistline!

B: protein shake
L: 2 hard boiled eggs, crudités and chopped fruit. Humous.
D: chorizo and pepper and onion frittata

OuchBollocks · 01/11/2017 13:31

If you can't have a drink on your birthday when can you? Onwards and upwards indeed Eolian.

The baby still hasn't fully accepted the clock change. 5.30am today, with a wakeful period from 3.15 to 4. I could murder a coke and a muffin Hmm

Eolian · 01/11/2017 13:51

Trouble is, there's still half a pumpkin pie in the fridge! Sympathies over the baby/clock change thing. Dh takes ages to get used to it Hmm. The dc and I barely notice it!

Justchillaxing · 01/11/2017 14:14

Thanks. I had no sugar yesterday but not sure my meals were that great .. a lot of potato. I had an omelette for breakfast, potato wedges and potato salad for lunch and baked potato with tuna mayo and salad for dinner, also had some plain crisps in the evening and some vegetable soup.

OuchBollocks · 01/11/2017 17:06

That is a lot of potato! I'm sure it won't harm you but maybe mix it up with baked sweet potato or bean salad etc?

I will be having a fast day today, so a cup of tea to start the day, fish and veg for lunch and an omelette for dinner with salad and a little balsamic.

How many calories is your fast day ouch ? I toy with trying one but think i’d be too grumpy by the end of the day!!

OuchBollocks · 02/11/2017 07:46

I thought I would be but seem to be ok. I got 1000 calories a day on a fast day because I'm breastfeeding, but DS is 8 months and on solids so I'm starting to taper it down a bit. I'll go for about 850 - 900 calories today.

Eolian · 02/11/2017 08:20

Right, made dh take the rest of the bloody pumpkin pie to work! Am starting properly today. A slice of sourdough toast and unsweetened peanut butter for breakfast. It will be homemade soup for lunch and pork steaks and salad for dinner. Do you all try to avoid snacking, or do you have non-sugary snacks to help keep you on the straight and narrow?

I'm hoping to try and reduce the dc's sugar intake too. They are both slim but definitely eat too much sweet stuff!

OuchBollocks · 02/11/2017 08:24

I do have non sugar snacks but ideally I try (don't always succeed!) to not snack at all. Snacking triggers an insulin response which is undesirable for reasons I can't remember

I've tried to cut out snacks, just because it can become a habit and because, while I don't think "calories in, calories out" is the whole story, it's still pretty important. If I'm really hungry I do have something though but it's too easy for it to become an additional 600 calories a day that you didn't even realise you ate.

B: Soy latte
L: 2 x babybel, carrot, cucumber and pepper sticks with hummus, chopped pineapple (the pineapples are so delicious at the moment)
D: leftover chorizo and pepper frittata, salad, a snifter of Sailor Jerry's with lime juice (rum is the new gin, mark my words)

Justchillaxing · 02/11/2017 13:51

I don't think I could fast - I get dizzy and headaches if I don't eat enough.

Yesterday I had cheese and tomato omelette for breakfast, veg soup for lunch and 97% meat sausages with a little rice and carrots and peas for dinner. I did have a snack of a little muesli with a tiny drop of milk ...

Tottyandmarchpane1 · 02/11/2017 16:00

I avoid snacking completely. Before I started this I put everything into mFP and snacking was by far and away the biggest calorie part of my day (mostly sugar). Now I could snack on healthier stuff but tbh I don’t think that would kick my habit and I need to get used to eating only when I am hungry.

Justchillaxing · 02/11/2017 16:51

I should avoid snacking too but I'm always hungry in the evening. Hopefully having a healthier snack of soup or muesli will help.

Eolian · 03/11/2017 13:02

For the moment I am going to see how I get on by just quitting sugar and booze, and not trying to control my diet other than that. I don't want to be counting carbs or using things like MFP because I have realised that I seriously resent how much time I have spent during my adult life thinking about food and what I should or shouldn't eat! And has all that resulted in me being the weight I want? Nope.

So... one simple rule to stick to, and no further agonising or berating myself over my food choices! Oh and I'm not weighing myself either. I have no idea what I weigh. I just look forward to being able to fit comfortably into all my clothes (instead of just some of them!).

Justchillaxing · 03/11/2017 13:07

Eolian that's kind of what I'm doing too. Except I'm not eating much gluten because it makes me feel ill. I'm going away for a few days in two weeks and will probably eat cake then GrinCake but otherwise trying to stay away from bread cake and biscuits.

Yesterday I had cheese and tomato omelette for breakfast, cottage pie with cabbage for lunch and veg soup for dinner.

OuchBollocks · 03/11/2017 13:34

I quit crisps initially then fell off the crisps wagon. Need need need to back on that one.

I'm 2 weeks into a self imposed 6 week booze ban and am surprised by how little I miss it.

Justchillaxing · 03/11/2017 14:09

crisps are my back up plan if I crave something because they don't make me want more and more like sweet things do.

I know that feeling Overcome Sad Sorry to hear about your MIL. I hope you get through the day and tomorrow. Don't put too much pressure on yourself, it's a difficult time.

I had an ok day yesterday, cheese and tomato omelette for lunch and baked chicken breast wrapped in bacon with a little rice and gravy for dinner and a teaspoon of potato salad. I wasn't hungry in the evening.

Eolian · 04/11/2017 18:35

Sending you positive vibes, Overcome. I know it's early days, but I'm finding it easier than I thought. I guess it's probably because stepping off the sugar rollercoaster stabilises your appetite a bit. I also had a massage and facial this afternoon (birthday voucher), so that's probably helping too!

I had banana pancakes this morning for breakfast. No sugar in the batter, and I had them with a tsp of peanut butter and some thawed frozen berries. I felt really full until after my normal lunch time, which is very unusual for me!

Cantseethewoods · 05/11/2017 00:42

Hi overcome. Happy to see you again but sorry for the circumstances. Agree with chillax not to put too much pressure on yourself.

I've had 2 days massively off the wagon. Own bodyweight in mini Heroes on Friday night and wine, and then more wine and tasting portions of apple crumble and chocolate soufflé last night. Back on it today!
