Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Hello everyone, I am doing fine except I had a friend round for dinner and she brought home made brownies which would have been rude not to have really. It was such a lovely gesture, but I was a bit disappointed about breaking my own rule. Never mind, onward and upwards x

TheChampagneGalop · 17/08/2017 16:35

Yes, onwards and upwards. Today I was in a hurry and grabbed a snickers for a quick snack. It tasted too sweet, not good. It's a victory at the same time that it did not inspire me to continue eating sweets today "since I already started".

Agree that JERF is the way to go, no need to go low-carb. Nothing wrong with potatoes and whole grains.

Emski76 · 17/08/2017 20:17

Hi all. Can I join? I am definitely craving sugar at the moment and feel my diet is out of control. I lacking in energy which is not good for a runner and definitely feel my diet is sugar heavy. I too like a poster above I'm going to try less sugar for 90 days and see what happens. I start a new job working in foundation in my children's school in September and I'm trying to think of some good breakfasts to get me through the morning and some good lunches so that I don't come home in the afternoon and raid the cupboards. I'm loving the tips above and will definitely be getting some of that yummy granola from Sainsbury's

TheChampagneGalop · 17/08/2017 20:29

Welcome Emski! It's great that so many are joining the sugar quitting!

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 20:32

Hello Emski. I think 3 months is a good amount of time for a fair trial.

I'm aiming for one lb a week, which would be another stone and a half by Xmas.

Today I've had a good day. I've had-

B - Lily's lovely granola with blueberries and Greek yoghurt.

L- Cheese and cherry Tom sandwich on multigrain roll with butter.

S - two apples. Handful of grapes. Cherry toms.

D - Lentil and sprout salad in lemon, honey and oil with fried halloumi.
(Sounds awful, but it's gorgeous!)

I will be having my yoghurt and grapes in a bit.

OuchBollocks · 17/08/2017 20:38

Can't believe we're heading towards the 300 posts mark! Hello emski :)

I'm bloody hungry as is typical at the end of a fasting day but I don't want sweet food, what is calling to me is honeyroar's cheese and multiseed sandwich. Yum.

Sorry! Shall I send you one over?

ifigoup · 17/08/2017 21:00

I had a good day foodwise. I once again resisted the packet of DC's biscuits in my handbag (I should really just get rid of them!) even though I was properly hungry (but I knew I'd end up feeling worse afterwards).

I normally drink no added sugar squash as my regular drink, but it's starting to taste really sickly and artificial (which, obviously, it is, but I've never noticed/cared before).

Littlepig8834 · 17/08/2017 21:09

I couldn't go low carb, had a stir fry for tea and it wouldn't be the same without noodles.

Other food has been ok

B: alpro yoghurt with oats
L: salad with harissa mackerel
D: veggie stir fry and noodles

No pud as yet, I do want something but not sure what.

Also, I made my own 'nakd' bars the other day. Popped dates and cashews in a blender and whizzed up until it all came together. Then added some unsweetened desiccated coconut, rolled out and put in the fridge to chill. They're really good and whilst I know dates have sugar, they don't leave me craving for more sweet stuff like chocolate or biscuits

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 21:23

They sound lovely Littlepig. Were they fresh or dried dates?

GoingRogue · 17/08/2017 21:27

ifigoup I usually drink no added sugar squash too, and am finding it a bit sickly so making it weaker. I do drink around 1 - 1.5 litres water a day, too (refill 500ml bottles with tap water and always carry one with me).

I too have mini packs of biscuits floating around. Can't wait for them all to be eaten and kids back at school so there are fewer temptations around!

Littlepig8834 your food looks super healthy, and love the sound of your home made bars.

Welcome Emski76 Smile

Littlepig8834 · 17/08/2017 22:08

Honeyroar dried dates, not sure if it would work with fresh, possibly it would but may need more nuts as fresh dates would mean a wetter mixture.

I'm a big fan of Nakd bars, so wanted to try and make my own to save some cash. I'm gonna add a bit of cocoa next time in the hope they taste like a Bounty.

Glad my food looks healthy! Someone at work commented today that if I wanted to lose weight I shouldn't eat mackerel as it's a fatty fish. I gave them my best fuck off stare!

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 22:08

If you're just starting this, and you've a fair bit to lose, I suggest measuring yourself at the start. I wish I had. I've lost inches but am not sure exactly how many.

I found, once I got into it and settled, I drank water when I wanted a cold drink, and didn't miss the juices and cordials at all. I still drink a lot of coffee, but I'm usually fighting jet lag and missing sleep.

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 22:12

Ah. I'm avoiding fruit in dry or juice form - they have a lot more sugar.. Shame though, I love dried dates. (But they've got to be better than chocolate though).

Overcome, if you get hungry or tempted tomorrow just nip into a M&S food and grab some grapes, sugar snap peas or something that you can nibble on without worry? It's just a case of finding healthy things that you like - I'm a total grape addict nowadays, but they do feel like a treat to me. A small bag of nuts is ok and filling too if you're hungry inbetween meals too. A latte also seems to starve off cravings too (but skinny ones don't!)

GoingRogue · 17/08/2017 22:23

Littlepig8834 can't believe someone at work said that to you! My MIL, and I think a lot of her generation, are still very much of the mind that fatty meat and fish are bad for you. She cuts every last bit off her roasted meats and I'm usually crying "leave it on please!" whilst dh is dragging a slice of white bread through the beef dripping Grin Hope her comment didn't spoil your enjoyment of your mackerel.

I second honey's suggestion of measuring your bust, waist and hips at least. Really helps with motivation I think. Although I "only" lost 13.5lbs on SW last year (still annoyed I didn't get my sparkly stone sticker haha) I lost a total of something like 8". Will have to dig my book out.

Right, compiling my shopping list as doing a big food shop in Asda tomorrow. What do I "need" to keep me on track this next week? I have things like:

Mini cheeses
Spreadable butter (recommendations?)
Pistachio nut butter if they have it
Cornflakes (if they're less than 5% sugar)
Cooked meats
Various salads

Will obvs get lots of fruit too. Can anyone suggest a healthier alternative to bread please? I normally get the 50/50 stuff as kids enjoy it. Would oat cakes, rye bread or seeded bagels be better?

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 22:32

I'm not sure Rogue, you'd be best reading a few packets and looking at sugars. I decided that I like bread but I'd go for whole meal with lots of seeds (more work to digest) and enjoy a bit less of it rather than finding something else. I've got a brand new breadmaker that my dad won, and I'd like to start making my own bread so I know what's in it, but I'm nervous about it for some reason. I cook a lot, bit I'm not a baker, I think that's why.

OvercomeByGravity have a lovely time in London! Maybe you could pack some fruit in your bag to snack on, too. Enjoy the art gallery Smile

Emski76 · 18/08/2017 06:15

Thanks for the welcome all. Here goes day one for me! Ive not been shopping yet but will check labels today for less than 5% sugar (is that right?). Will have to shop tonight with dh is home or il have to take my
boys with me (age 6 and 9) and they're not the best shopping companions!! I'll still be eating fresh fruit, I only drink water anyway and avoid naughty treats!! Wish me luck!!

GoingRogue · 18/08/2017 07:31

Emski76 good luck! My boys are 3 and 6 Smile Day 6 for me today. I've never done this before and haven't found it tooooo hard. I think the boys are eating better too as I'm not automatically grabbing the biscuit tin. And I'm not buying sugary cereals once the ones in the cupboard are gone (they are gonna hate me!).

Yes, 5g per 100g or less is best. But I'm not avoiding something if it's a little over. Noticed last night that my Lidl peanut butter is 7.2g so still had a teaspoon.

Littlepig8834 · 18/08/2017 08:37

Here's to a good first day Emski76.

I'm off work today, going to Denby Pottery Village, they have a beach for my DD and the cafe there is nice, will just have to avoid the cake!

honeyroar · 18/08/2017 09:24

Good luck for a nice day ladies.

I'm on day six after my "5week sabbatical"! The scales were looking good this morning. I think I've got rid of 2lbs of the 4lbs that I put on while I was off piste!

OuchBollocks · 18/08/2017 10:07

DD is being a total threenager and the baby has just popped his first tooth which explains why I've had such shitty sleep the last few nights. Throw in some period pains and running round like an are getting ready for some short notice visitors and I'm struggling to remember why troughing a pack of millionaire shortbread would be a bad idea :(
