Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

If you are serious about giving up sugar get over to the low carb. Lots of ideas there!

GoingRogue · 16/08/2017 23:01

Whatshouldmyusernamebe I love Asda's full fat Greek yoghurt with honey, but it has 14g of sugar per hundred. I think most of us on here have decided to stick with foods which are around 6g/6% sugar or less. So I would have it as a treat.

Tbh I'm getting used to plain yoghurt with berries/banana/granola already and I'm only on day 5. I'm only having 100g/125g once a day though. When I was on Slimming World I was having fat-free yoghurts morning, lunch and evening some days ! (I always like to finish a meal with something sweet, and they were "free"). Quickly realised that wasn't great due to the amount of sweeteners, and don't think all that dairy is good for me (I have milk, cheese and butter most days too).

Really hoping that after a couple of weeks I can have a nice meal and not crave something sweet straight after.

honeyroar · 16/08/2017 23:06

I think we're doing ok here Littlebillie, thanks. You don't need to low carb to do low sugar, or be serious about it. (I find it a bit rude that you said that actually, when people are doing well as we are). You can just cut out refined sugar and foods with high sugar content. Just eating good healthy food..

No Honey Greek yoghurt won't do. But you can add berries, grapes and nuts to your plain Greek yoghurt if you wanted to make it more fun.

honeyroar · 16/08/2017 23:09

GoingRogue you'll find when you do have a dessert or something you find it really, really sweet and you get the "Sugarpuffs effect" (where your wee smells sweet! Tmi, sorry!).

msrisotto · 16/08/2017 23:21

f you are serious about giving up sugar get over to the low carb. Lots of ideas there!

Low carb is seriously, something I could never ever do. I thought I was wedded to Chocolate but it is unthinkable to ban pasta! and potatoes! Nope, too awful.

OuchBollocks · 17/08/2017 06:51

I have no intention of going low carb. I know there's people who love it and swear by it but I don't personally buy into the 'carbs are evil' mantra, plus there is exactly zero chance I would stick to it. I'm aiming more towards the 'I Quit Sugar' people's mantra of JERF - just eat real food - which includes porridge, jacket spuds with the skin for fibre and satiety, sweet potato etc.

That soda bread looks delicious :) I have cut down on bread since I quit sugar, but that's more because I feel too much bloats me. I've bought some of that Lizi's low sugar granola to have with yoghurt. Looks good, thanks for the heads up.

GoingRogue I am a bit Hmm about slimming world. Now I don't deny some people have seen fab results on it but from what I see a lot of people turn to highly processed foods, going wild on diet coke and muller lights and eschewing good fats for curly wurlys with their 'syns'. It all seems a bit topsy turvy.

Morning! We use a James Norton recipe for bread because it's so delicious but also kneading is optional - you can just mix the dough fairly roughly and set it aside for a longer prove. We don't have a bread maker (tiny kitchen so no room!) but I'll take a photo of the recipe later and share.

I found pistachio butter in Sainsbury's last night! It's so delicious! Smile

honeyroar thanks for the heads up Grin I'm already used to Weetabix wee !

I'm with the rest of you re: proper low carb. Couldn't do it. No way josé! Love my bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. I base my meals around them. Will try and cut down though, e.g. just have fewer spuds with a big roast, and maybe not have a massive mound of pasta. One of Slimming World's better ideas is to fill your plate with at least 1/3 veg (not carby stuff like pots though) So am going to do that when we have pasta-based dishes. Might encourage the dc to have more veg too.

Ooh pistachio nut butter sounds gorgeous! Something else for me to look out for whilst doing the big food shop tomorrow. Love trying new things Smile

Good news is that I was just a little heavy handed with the sugar in my tea, and instead of enjoying it more I think I enjoyed it a little less?! Shock Can feel it on my lips after finishing it. Will aim for quarter of a teaspoon now, and will keep everything crossed that one day I'll enjoy my tea without any sugar in (I used to have 2 heaped teaspoons).

OuchBollocks · 17/08/2017 08:45

We like the Meridian peanut butters. We buy the kilo tubs of it - DD(3) refuses basically all meat and most fish so she needs veggie sources of protein.

Fast day for me today, so its:
B - cup of tea
L - full fat natural yoghurt with a few strawberries and about 15g granola
D - a sort of bastardised salade nicoise

OuchBollocks your entire day's food is one meal for me ! Aren't you going to be starving?

OuchBollocks · 17/08/2017 09:34

Yeah probably Grin but I'm doing the 5:2 diet so its only one day of very low calorie eating then I can eat normal portions tomorrow

GoingRogue · 17/08/2017 09:50

Oh I see! Thank goodness for that, was starting to feel like a right old pig Grin

OuchBollocks · 17/08/2017 09:58

Oh goodness no, I couldn't live like that! If you really want a fright have a read of the 'how do people lose weight so fast?' thread in Chat.

Morning all. I've just tried the low sugar Lily's granola for breakfast with Greek yoghurt and blueberries. It was absolutely delicious. Definitely my new standard breakfast!

pandapop17 · 17/08/2017 11:24

Just checking in. It's been a week for me. I am finding it easier but still difficult when out with others. Yesterday I had half a slice of Apple cake when out for lunch with a friend. Wed seems to be my day of weakness! The bonus is I've lost 1lb. I would like to loose half a stone so am going to keep going Smile

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 11:38

Panda, while I've been doing this I've lost an average of a lb a week, yet every week I've either been out for a meal and eaten what I wanted, or been out for drinks and had a good night, or had a takeaway etc. One deviation every now and again is not going to hurt if you're generally eating healthily and sensibly the rest of the time.. You've not got much to lose so I guess this doesn't apply as much to you, but for people like me with loads to lose, you have to build it into everyday life and I think it's not good to tell yoursel off for a "bad day" and bring the mentality down. Life happens, you've got to enjoy it, and pick yourself up and carry on. I like this JERF/no sugar as there's no points, Syns, calories or limits, so nothing to feel bad about going over!

(Sorry that was a bit of a waffle!)

pandapop17 · 17/08/2017 12:26

Agree the odd treat doesn't hurt. I just need to make sure it doesn't go back to 100g of choc for me!

OuchBollocks · 17/08/2017 12:34

Back on the wagon panda but well done :)

OP posts:
GoingRogue · 17/08/2017 13:45

pandapop17 you said you had half a slice of Apple cake yes? Well done for only having half! I had half a biscuit yesterday and was going to mentally berate myself, but thought "hang on, this is an improvement on the 3 x biscuits I normally would have had!".

I was nodding away to your post honey (not waffle at all! Sensible thoughts and views). I have a friend's birthday bash on Saturday. It's a hog roast, so hoping to fill up on meat and salad. But if some birthday cake is doing the rounds then I'll enjoy a slice with my friends and family. Oh, and that granola is lovely isn't it! I'm saving my portion for my supper/evening snack.

Is everyone weighing in on here? What day? Was wondering if we should try and synchronise, or if it would be too tricky...

OuchBollocks · 17/08/2017 13:55

I just had some granola, I was impressed, and 20g went a long way in a bowl of yoghurt and strawberries.

going I weigh on an ad hoc basis but am happy to join in on a fixed weighing day.

Cantseethewoods · 17/08/2017 14:15

Still going here. I agree that the thing is moderation and not eating one Starburst, going "oh well I've ruined it now" and eating half of Tesco chocolate aisle. Had a meeting today and my iced coffee came sweetened. It would have been rude to refuse/return it as I didn't buy it, so I just drank and savoured it and then got back to normal.

I'm also unconvinced by proper low carb as appropriate/ sustainable for me. I feel it's too restrictive, especially if you don't really like fatty meats/creamy foods and don't want to eat a lot of processed meats (hams, salami etc). However, like Slimming World, 5:2 and pretty much any other diet, I think it suits some people. I know people who have lost using pretty much every method.

Just found out I'm going to need a bilateral foot operation. It's semi-elective (in terms of it needs doing but its not urgent yet) but I figure I should just get it over with. Will massively limit my mobility for 6 months so really important that I get into a sustainable but lower energy diet so I don't pack on 2 stone in rehab.

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 14:43

I will struggle to weigh in on a certain day as I have no routine. I'm also wondering if all weighing in together will make it slightly negative - you know, you've lost a lb, and are pleased, but then you see X has lost 2lbs and Y has lost 1.5lbs.. Whereas if the results are dotted in and among other posts on various days it's less comparative. Could be just me! I can find a way to be negative about myself in everything, and I'm trying to avoid it this time round!

GoingRogue · 17/08/2017 15:46

Cantseethewoods oh no, sorry to hear you have to have a foot operation. Do you want the surgery soon? Are you in pain?

honey I think you're right, let's not make this a competition. If people want to post losses/gains then that's fine. I downloaded a free weight tracker app the other week and set it to remind me every Mon, Weds and Fri morning. It's how I noticed I'd put on 1.5lbs in ten days (on top of the 5lbs I'd already gained). I think now I've got the hang of it, I'll just weigh in on a Saturday morning. Friday night is usually a bit of a treat night (bottle of wine, popcorn, chocolate) so am hoping the prospect of a WI the following morning may deter me.

I'm having a very hungry caterpillar sort of day ! So far...

B: bran flakes and blueberries. Tea.
S: banana
L: ham sandwich, strawberries and a peach. I was out with the kids. When I got home at 1.15 I was still hungry so had cheese and crackers !
S: a cup of tea. A bowl of yoghurt with fresh pineapple, a few more strawberries and a sprinkling of granola. No idea what I'll have for supper tonight now though...?
D: will be cod in a tomato sauce, new pots and lots of veg.
