Losing weight/excercise with thyroid issues

Hey just wondering if any of you lovely ladies have had success losing weight when you have an under active thyroid (I have no thyroid never had one and take thyroxine) feel constantly shattered too.

I'm probably the biggest I've ever been and totally miserable as I'm just stuck. I'm a single parent & nurse so time to excercise is limited unless I do stuff in the house.
Just looking for people who are struggling too for a bit of support and some ideas, hints or tips.

im interested in this as well

last time i lost weight i was living on 1000 calories which isnt sustainable for me at the moment

I am under active and can successfully lose weight. I can lose weight following slimming world or MFP. Ive lost 10lbs over the last 4 weeks.

I have no thyroid, I've just lost a stone in 7 weeks on the low carb bootcamp that's running at the moment.

revolution909 · 14/07/2017 00:19

I'm.hypo but very mild (50mg). I've been able to lose 4st in 9 months through counting calories and exercise :)

Wow a few of you have done amazingly well
Slimming world and I just don't get on - my sister however (also no thyroid but removed due to cancer) lost 6 stone on it.

I try to eat really well - healthy no bad snacks and just don't lose(I do have a treat on one day of the week) but I don't put on either.

Will look into the low carb bootcamp, don't think I could only eat 1000 calories a day I'd be so hangry 😊

Mainly frustrated at being so tired - I do lots with 4 kids and I am a nurse so keeping the house etc I'm on the go a few good days then I crash and am knackered. I'm on 350mcg of thyroxine which is a quite a big dose apparently

Well done revolution99 that's amazing
Maybe I'm just not motivated enough

Slimming world can go wrong if you don't eat enough "speed" and eat too much of the free food.

Try combining SW with MFP so you get an idea of portion sizes. That's how I've lost weight. Good luck!

I take 150mcg and seem to be having success with using MFP to keep to 1200 calories per day.

I tried low carb, which worked but made me feel absolutely awful, like all of the symptoms of my underactive thyroid became much more prominent. I did read various sources suggesting that people with hypothyroidism need a reasonable amount of carbs for meds to work properly - don't know if that's scientifically sound but I certainly feel much better eating slightly more carbs ..

Have you seen your GP about the tiredness, it could be being caused by something other than your thyroid? Anaemia, infection etc etc ..

swlondonnanny · 14/07/2017 20:19

Kaykee 350mcg is a massive dose! Highest I've ever had was 300mcg and only for short period of time. Currently on 125mcg.
I think underactive thyroid affects everyone differently, also in my opinion it also depends on how long you have had thyroid issues...
I've been taking the medication since early childhood. My thyroid function goes up and down (normal for Hashimoto's)
As far as weight loss goes if I am on right dose of thyroxine AND right diet(for me) I can lose weight.
As for the diet I do low carb high fat, seems to work for me well. For exercise I walk
You said you are tired a lot - have you had your iron levels checked recently?
Good luck!

swlondonnanny · 14/07/2017 20:26

twomoreminutes I did a lot of 'research ' into it as low carb genuinely works best for me but don't want to harm my thyroid by my diet. Generally it said not to go lower than 30grams of carbs a day so I aim for between 30 and 50. I had loads of bloodtests run by my endocrinologist around 2 months into my diet and all was fine. Have been on it for 4 and half months now and will recheck my thyroid soon again...

mummytobemaybe · 19/07/2017 12:45

I have an underactive thyroid and am on thyroxine. I have lost a stone in just over 2 months. I find it okay to lose weight but obviously quite slowly. You can do it!

Stuckinstressville · 19/07/2017 12:55

I am doing The Body Chef, 1200 cal and low carb diet, after my BMI spiked to 30, so far, 14 days in - 7lb/3.3kg down, so I have found my diet... now to emulate this in real life and not bankrupting myself. I found I have not been hungry, am full, energized and seem ok. So will continue with low cal and low carb. Also with hashimotos and on 100mg, and had three miscarriages in the last year, and a 21 m old DS and FT job. The body chef food delivery option was my last call as SW and WW just didn't come easily and I hated the groups.

Good luck!
