1000 calories a day?

lifesjoys · 29/04/2017 23:09

2 weeks today, I have been on a 1000-1200 calorie a day diet.

Each day, I eat a bowl of bran flakes & either chilli con carne or spaghetti bolognase.

I may also have a 5kcal jelly pot if I have any!

I hit all my nutrient targets or as close to.

If I'm doing okay on it, can I carry on??

I've lost 35lbs in nearly 5 weeks.

As I said, I tweak my diet constantly.

At the minute with a newborn it's simply convenient, comes out the freezer & into the microwave.

There have been several days (not together) that I haven't eaten (baby used to cry a LOT).

I will be introducing veg & eggs into my diet.

Also I have researched which nutrients I should be having to keep me going & my current diet does reach most nutrient goals

lou no I'm not going to 'tell them all off' but I'm never going to agree that it's a good idea and I will never be surprised when the weight piles back on when people start eating 'properly' again. 600 Cals a day is not sustainable. People who do diets like this usually do not learn anything valuable about nutrition or portion sizes because they're drinking shakes and not eating normal amounts of nutritional food which obviously you carry on doing and is sustainable.

budgiegirl · 02/05/2017 07:51

My point is you cannot recommend diets like that to people unless you're qualified to do so

To be fair, phoenix, lou wasn't recommending the diet, just mentioning it's what her friend does, and she will support her friends choices. As a matter of interest, what qualification do you have that makes you so sure that you are correct in your assertion that VLCDs are bad for you?

I do agree that s VLCD of shake/meal replacement sort does very little to teach about nutrition, normal eating etc, and therefore anyone on them should be researching and preparing for when they go back on to normal food. But purely as a weigh loss tool, if the GP is happy with it, I can't really see a problem with it.

Loubilou09 · 02/05/2017 08:22

Nowhere on this thread or in real life has anyone asked or sought your approval or agreement to a VLCD phoenix so again I am really not sure what on earth your point is and why you felt you had to post on a subject you clearly know nothing about. Up until a few hours ago you didn't even know what a VLCD was...I also don't know enough about them hence why I haven't recommended or given my opinion on them - all I have done is stated that I know someone doing it and how she looks and feels as a result.

This clearly highlights my frustration at people spouting off opinions about things they obviously know nothing about.....

Sigh...

Anyway OP back to you. What you are doing is clearly working for you, you have heard a lot of "opinions" but all mainly from people who don't appear to have an awful lot of knowledge on the subject in hand! Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

Regarding very low calorie intake - isn't the Blood Sugar Diet (800 cals per day) endorsed by the DOCTOR Michael Mosley?

Keep up the good work OP, sounds like you are doing fab!

VerySadInside · 02/05/2017 11:20

Well done OP! You've done really well especially with a. Baby to run around after too!

1000cals a day is plenty. If you are managing well at the moment then there's no reason to change and not to be rude but you still have a bit to lose so it's not as if your body is running on empty.

Duck eggs are super yummy, slightly different composition to hens eggs that makes them very good for baking. I really enjoy them poached with asparagus. If you leave the yolk nice and runny then there's no reason for a sauce and that saves calories.

and not to be rude but you still have a bit to lose so it's not as if your body is running on empty.

^^ I do, I've another 50lbs to lose yet so to be honest, isn't it better to stay as I am for at least another 25lbs??

I just think if I increase my calorie intake, I increase my weight.

Not if you stay below your calorie requirement to maintain. There are calculators online you can use to find your daily calorie requirement. In theory, as long as you stay below that, you should lose weight.

However, if you feel well on 1000 cals, and it's working for you, then I'd stick with it. Perhaps just make sure you are having lots of variety of foods to ensure you get all the nutrients you need.

I do second the idea of working out (I know you plan to get the all clear!) I once elastic some weight in my 20s (no idea how much but definitely I lost weight) and I completely lost my bum... This time it has been a mix of exercise and diet and I've just shrunk and developed some awesome muscle I the process :)

Agoddessonamountaintop · 02/05/2017 17:30

What exercise are you doing charimito?

charimito · 02/05/2017 18:03

OMG just realised how Autocorrect messed up my previous post! Anyways, I do a mix of running and strength training. I do 2 mid range run, one long range run a week, 2 days of sprinting / general running (around 30mins) and 30 mins of strength training 5 times a week.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 02/05/2017 18:31

Wow that's good going!
