redbracelet · 11/03/2007 20:59

without hunger pangs. Sick of being revolting and want maximum results in the least amount of time or i won't stick to it.

Have already cut down on my portion sizes and started eating more negative calorie foods as well as started exercising more, although i am building that up slowly

OP posts:
isaidno · 11/03/2007 21:03

best to do it slow and steady really; exercise is the key!

drink plenty of water, eat more fruit and veg - good luck!

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 21:06

maybe i need to do more exercise then.
more water-there's an idea.

OP posts:
redbracelet · 11/03/2007 21:19

OP posts:
redbracelet · 11/03/2007 21:37

last ditch attempt for tonight before i go on an exercise binge

OP posts:
Aloveheart · 11/03/2007 21:39

My sister went to the gym at least 4 times a week and didn't loose a thing.

Whoooosh · 11/03/2007 21:40

Atkins gives you quick results-not easy to stick to and not great results long term but you will lose more in 4 wks than other normal diests-after that,it really evens out...Good luck.

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 21:47

i can't afford the gym unfortunatly so am limited as to what i can do at home. Not wanting to turn flab to muscle though as i want the numbers to go down!

Atkins...is that the one where all you eat is stodgey fod like sausages and you can't eat pasta?

OP posts:
Bucketsofdynomite · 11/03/2007 21:53

Don't go on a diet, esp Atkins, it makes you such a bore and distracts you from the main goal. Which is to change your life for good, not just for a while. Isaidno's got it all right there.
Have a look on the Food forum, there's always lots of healthy cooking tips there, esp how to make veg taste nicer.
Re exercise, how about a dance video you can do at home in private? Just to build up your stamina and therefore confidence.

EliSpence · 11/03/2007 21:56

Cut out bread and cut down on portions. Try not to eat late at night and have a good breakfast. I think bread really makes me feel bloated. I always cut it out if I'm trying to loose a few pounds.

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 21:56

i do a street dance vid as much as 2 children wll allow and have started exercising for general tone up.

my main goal is to lose weight though!

crazylazydaisy · 11/03/2007 21:58

I have lost 2 stone since november yippee! My tips are

  1. Eat what you need, not what you want
  2. Eat lots of proteins and very few carbs.(fills me up quickly and gives energy)
  3. Drink a cup of water every time you go into the kitchen
  4. Walk, walk, walk. Even if you only have 10 mins then walk as fast as you can
  5. I weigh myself 1st thing in morning and last thing at night- this stops me eating in evenings as i know i am going to weigh myself.
I havent really calorie counted as i have got to know when my body has reached "enough" point! All the best
scatterbrain · 11/03/2007 21:59

Atkins has just been proved to be the most effective way to lose weight.

Basically cut out carbs - so for dinner you can have steak and broccoli and a few carrots - but no potatoes, pasta or rice. No bread - so lunches can be hard - but you can have meat and a small amount of salad.

So you can do Atkins with normal food - so technically no price tag attached !

Cambridge diet also very quick and effective - but if you go back to normal eating after you will put it all back on ! I've done Lighter Life and it is just the same as Cambridge but twice the price !

Cutting the carbs is easy and quick - like you I need to see quick results.

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 22:02

i don't eat much bread anyway as i don't have lunch often. I tend to only eat bread if i am having soup and try to stick to 2 slices per day.

Really no pasta? Thats a great way to get energy and keeps me going for absolutley ages!

Potatoes i don't really eat either.

But if the main goal is to lose weight and keep it off, you can only do that by changing your life. If your life didn't need changing you wouldn't need to lose weight. There are no quick fixes, start as you mean to go on.

scatterbrain · 11/03/2007 22:07

Maybe you need to up your activity levels then ?

Running is the best and cheapest way to exercise ! You acn download starter plans - get fit in 8 weeks or whatever ?

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 22:09

8 weeks...???!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to lose quicker than that

I don't feel like "me" with this extra weight.

Buckets, the change i am making is to lose the weight.

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 22:10

I know i don't sound it but i really am grateful for your help on this thread.

I started Slimming World on the 10th Jan and I've lost 1.5 stones so far. I am a real 'no diet' woman but I tell you it'sbeen really easy. I'm veggie so do green days and basically eat what I did before - pasta, rice, potatoes, veg and Quorn in huge amounts!! What I don't eat is loads of chocolate and crisps but I do have a treat each day and still have a curry a week and a meal out (with pudding)now and again.

I'm a complete convert!!!! It feels so good when the weight comes off and winning Slimmer of the Week most weeks keeps me in Ryvitas.

scatterbrain · 11/03/2007 22:15

Be realistic though - you shouldn't lose any more than 2 lbs per week - it is just not healthy !

It will take as long as it takes but every pound off is better than a pound on isn't it ?

Every step down is a step in the right direction !

Crash diets don't work - they are unsustainable and bad for your metabolism !

stitch · 11/03/2007 22:16

get serious diarhoeaa, as in cholera type stuff!

i have found atkins to be brilliant. basically you eat normal food, just without the potatos, pasta, rice or bread. lots of meat chicken fish eggs and veg. aand its cheaperr ss you buy ingredients rather than processed cooked foodd iyswim.

excercise is essential, buton its own not enough. i used to sweat it out at ht e gym loads, but didnt lose ny weight ther.how old are the kids? can you stick them in a puushcair? if so, go out and walk. everywwhrere. best excersie ther eis.

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 22:17

any ways to increase metabolism then?

I lost 5lb over last week and a half so obv need to lose it.

I hate being so wobbly

redbracelet - have you looked at the GI Jeans Diet by Rosemary Conley? You wouldn't have to go to slimming classes if they aren't your thing, though they have an exercise class as part of it. She has written a book with that title, it's in the magazine (new one just out), online (I think it is www.Rosemary-Conley.co.uk), you can buy online or postal support or just do it yourself with the book, basically There are also exercise DVDs, etc.

From what you posted here is sounds like it might suit you as it is designed to make you feel full (as eating low glycaemic index foods keeps you feeling fuller longer very effectively.) Also encourages you to exercise/get more active to speed up the weight loss.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 11/03/2007 22:17

The honest answer is that there is no quick fix.

If you want to lose weight, and you want to maintain that weight loss, then you have to change the way you eat for good. it?s no good if you take a quick fix diet to lose vast amounts of weight, because as soon as you start to eat the way you?ve been used to, you?ll start to pile the weight back on again.

I personally would recommend that you count the amount of calories you eat. You can do it either via a calory counter, or you could use a programme such as weightwatchers which does work on a similar principle, except it?s done in points not calories.

The average woman needs approx 1900 calories to maintain her body weight, if you lower that to 1100 calories per day, you can expect to lose approx 2 lb per week. This is a safe weight loss, and no more than 2 lb a week is recommended unless you have a very significant amount of weight to lose.

Record everything you eat, including snacks. Where possible, weigh the food you?re eating to ensure that you?re not miscalculating the calories. Try to drink two ltr of water per day, this will ensure that you flush out all the waste products and that will include the fat that you?ll be burning.

Limit the amount of red meat you eat and try where possible to stick to fish and chicken. Also eat less carbs and more protein, but don?t cut out carbs altogether, try to limit your carb intake to one meal a day. Try where possible to cut out bread and instead eat salad etc. Carbs are burned quicker than protein so if you?re eating lots of carbs you will get hungrier quicker.

Avoid things like mayonnaise and full-fat salad dressings as these contain a lot of calories (100 g mayonnaise contains 500 calries) so by cutting these out you are allowing yourself more calories for your meals iyswim.

If frying foods dry fry them instead of using oil. Oils esp olive oil contains a huge amount of calories (100 ml olive oil contains 900 calories so just one tablespoon for frying contains 150 calories). If possible avoid frying altogether and grill/steam foods instead.

If possible then of course it is better to exercise as this will burn more calories which in turn does mean you can up your calory intake for the days you exercise and will also help with toning.

I lost 10 lb in six weeks by dieting this way and also exercising hard, so it can be done.

Good luck

laundrylover · 11/03/2007 22:19

I've evened out at 2.5 lbs a week but I do have quite a lot to lose so would agree that a little a week is the best way to go. I'm liking SW as I can have HUGE portions and the only thing I weigh is my breakfast cereal which I can then bulk out with banana. It's all common sense and healthy eating really but despite knowing all the info I do find that going to the group every week is keeping me on track.

redbracelet · 11/03/2007 22:19

diarhea(sp?) crossed my mind as did laxatives

I can't drive so I do walk everywhere but i think my metabolism has changed since having the children. My youngest is still in a pushchair but we seem to just do smaller walks with no time for anything longer than that or faster.
