Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

Had a very good gym workout yesterday! Maybe too good! My hands aren't sore. Aside from that it's pretty much everything from the neck down. I really should get to the gym more often!

Did some new things for the first time. That could be it as well ...

Lorns · 14/02/2007 18:46

Mrs Fish - just being nosey - what exercises did your PT ask you to do at home? Worried you might be doing too much in these early weeks!! Shouldn't be doing so much that you feel exhausted!

Hi everyone
Mrsfish - very impressed that you are doing so well on the gym and walking, well done

Finding it hard to make it to the gym this week (mornings have been pretty busy) and my older two are off school for half-term from tomorrow so will be even more difficult (I might hunt out my Davina workout DVD!). But will keep myself busy and active, take lo's for walks/swimming etc.

I have also promised dh that I will get back to outdoor running with him from this weekend. He will make sure I keep to that arrangement, so I better get on to my mum to mind the kids for an hour or so for us! There is a nice run along a river towpath near us, lovely scenery and flat!!! So will start myself there and go for 3.5 miles - although I may have to slow down to a walk a couple of times for first few trips out. But I am determined to get my distance up to 10k this year. You are all so motivating on this thread as you reinforce how enjoyable exercise is and how much better it makes you feel.

speedymama · 14/02/2007 19:27

I took today off from work to finish making my curtains so after dropping the twins off at nursery, I did the advance Tae-Bo work out on the Get Ripped DVD (1 hour) followed by the Pilates Ab workout (30 minutes). I was completely worn out but I felt great. I'll take a break tomorrow and will probably do David Kirsch's Bootcamp work out on Friday.

thirtysomething · 14/02/2007 21:03

well done mrsfish you are an inspiration! I could have barely managed a run to the bus stop when preggers! Since Monday I've done 2 x 50 minute cardio sessions at the gym and a 30-minute swim. Feeling shattered and achey tonight but also didn't feel guilty when DH surprised me by taking me out for a pizza at lunchtime! Also have finally shifted another pound and that really spurred me on to get back to the gym today!

speedymama · 15/02/2007 09:03

Got dressed for work this morning and noticed that my trousers are really loose around my waist and my jumper is much looser around my arms. I've noticed that my tummy is shrinking as well.

I am feeling peckish even though I had a bowl of bran flakes with skimmed milk this morning but I'm just going to drink water to satiate myself until I have my lunch which is tuna salad (no dressing), an apple, two plums, two tangerines, a handful of grapes and one banana. I'm going to go for a brisk walk after lunch too.

Can you tell I'm determined to lose 10lb? Hopefully, when I weigh myself tomorrow, I'll be whooping with joy!

MrsFish · 15/02/2007 09:20

Hi Lorns - I think I was so knackered because I hadn't slept well the night before and had been busy all day, so it just caught up with me.

Felt fine yesterday even after all that walking.

MrsFish · 15/02/2007 09:22

Speedymama - well done, that is good motivation when clothes start to feel looser

agalch · 15/02/2007 09:46

Hello all

I am getting married in April and have been eating healthily since beginning of November.

Started off at 14stthen joined Scottish Slimmers on 30th November when i was down to 13st 4lbs.

I am now down to 11st 9lbs so pretty ok with the weight loss but i have to start doing some excercise, just don't know what.

Can't afford to join the gym atm so have bought a lateral thigh trainer, will this do me any good? If yes how long should i do it for and how many times per week? I am not a strong swimmer so not sure it would be a good fat burner for me. What else can i do? Bearing in mind i have done no excercise for years and years.

Thanks

speedymama · 15/02/2007 10:00

Agalch, well done with the weight loss. That is a tremendous achievement.

Swimming is very good for all round fitness and if you keep at it, you will gain cardiovascular benefit from it. How about walking? That is free and you will get plenty of fresh air plus cardiovascular training. As you get fitter you could start to walk/jog and then move on to jogging. Bupa's running guide is very good source of advice.

Also, could you afford a exercise DVD? There are many available. My personal recommendations would be Davina's Power of 3 which is excellent and comprises 3x30 sections (toning, kickboxing, yoga type stuff). Another favourite of mine is TaeBo which basically kickboxing. If you are pushed for time, I highly recommend the 10 minute Kickbox bootcamp by Keli Roberts which comprises 5 x 10minute sections that raise your heart beat and work all parts of the body.

Plus, our in-house fitness advisor will give you lots of tips so keep posting!

laloop · 15/02/2007 10:21

Morning everyone
Hi agalch, welcome aboard!
No gym today so am going to do the davina DVD for 30 mins plus an hour's housework before I go out so better get a move on?

I need to buy a new sports bra seeing I'm starting running again. Currently have an M&S sports one which isn't really up to the challenge. Anyone got any good suggestions?

agalch · 15/02/2007 10:23

Thanks Speedymama

I just always wondered if slow pathetic swimming was worth the effort but if i keep at it it would be and i might even improve. It's the thought of getting my wobbly bits from the changing room into the pool that worries me

I do walk lots but have baby in a buggy and dd1 2.5 and mindee nearly 3 so it's a snails pace usually. Will try to get some time(mum may sit with dd's in the afternoons)to do some serious walking.

have a Fiona Phillips dvd(the shame) but it's rubbish frankly. Will get something you have suggested and give that a bash.

Thank you!!

speedymama · 15/02/2007 10:25

Runners World often recommend the running bras from lessbounce .

speedymama · 15/02/2007 10:34

Agalch, no problem. If you are interested in TaeBo by Billy Blank, he has many DVDs but the one I would recommend is TaeBo Get Ripped. It has a instructional section which shows you how to do the moves properly, an 8 minute workout but it helps to be fit for that as it is intense, a basic TaeBo work out which is what I would recommend for a beginner and the Advance Work out section which last 1 hour. You get a lot on one DVD and therefore, imo, very good value for money.

Another recommendation for a complete beginner is the Little Black Dress Work out by Zoe Lucker. I think this is very good for someone new to exercise. It has 5 x 10 minute sections comprising warm up, dance, kickbox, tone, yoga/cooldown. I use to do this when I started to get back into shape after having my DTS and enjoyed it.

laloop · 15/02/2007 10:50

Thanks speedymama, will check out that website this evening

Agalch, definitely recommend walking a few times a week, great exercise and free
Is there a swimstroke clinic or improver lessons at your local pool? If so, I would recommend looking into that as you could improve your swimming tecnique/distance and maybe learn to incorporate different strokes into your swim sessions to vary it a bit so you work different muscles. I find swimming doesn't really help me lose much weight but it does improve my general fitness and stamina. Plus it's one of my favourite forms of exercise so it just makes me feel good

Right, gotta go, Davina waiting

speedymama · 15/02/2007 11:07

Agalch, if you want to start off with one DVD, I would recommend Power of 3 by Davina, it is very good as Laloop and many others on here will testify.

Have a good workout Laloop. Which section are you doing?

laloop · 15/02/2007 11:53

Hi speedymama, have just done "the legs and bum" section and I am feeeeling it

Davina's DVD is very good, and time-manageable as it is broken down into 3 x 30min workouts targetng different areas so you can do just one, or if you are superhuman all three!

Ds2 (he's just turned 2) joins in with the fast jogging around the kitchen, lol

Going to my swim club later tonight too

speedymama · 15/02/2007 12:02

I have done 10k races, work out with weights in the gym but even now when I do that section, I still feel it the next day. It is such an intense workout that tones your body.

On Saturday, I asked my DTS (nearly 3yo) to choose the exercise DVD and do you know which one they chose? The Pump it Up Dance DVD! I think they like the outfits!

laloop · 15/02/2007 12:13

Thanks speedymama, glad it's not just me - I had to go upstairs for something just after I'd finished it and could barely make it

agalch · 15/02/2007 14:46

Thanks speedymama and laloop. Will go to Asda tonight after my weigh in and get the Davina dvd.Totally unfit so hope i can manage to keep up with her lol.

Might ask ds1 or ds2 to come for a walk at night with me after girls are in bed. They might enjoy time with me without the girls too

speedymama · 15/02/2007 14:59

Agalch, this is the one I have but you can buy the box set now which contains both her DVDs and prices are similar.

Hi everyone

Thought I would let you know that with this months Health and Fitness magazine (£3.15) you get Joanna Halls 28 day body plan DVD with it.

Ive heard its quite a good one so worth it for the £3.15 and the mag looks good too!

laloop · 15/02/2007 16:00

Thanks Pecka, will be on the look-out for that mag

PeckaRolloverAgain · 15/02/2007 16:13

DVD

This is a link to the DVD on amazon - 1 poor review but the rest are really positive.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 15/02/2007 19:06

I started teh BUPA running training last night - would like to do the Race for Life on May 20th.

OMG !! I found it very very hard. Was grateful to only have to run for a minute at the time and even that REALLY hurt my legs and had me breathless

BUT I carried on and did the full session as directed and will do the second stage tomorrow.

Can anyone reassure me that it will get better!
