Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

Hi skibump
Was really nice to get running outdoors again today, looking forward to going out again soon. Glad to have another 5k-er!

MuckyAnthea · 18/02/2007 04:25

Hi everyone
Just wanted to add since I started my gym regime, properly around 3 months ago, I have not lost weight on the scales, but I have lost inches. I used to weigh between 77- 79 kilos, now I am never over 70, but sadly am also never below. I would love to get to 65 kilos by April, but I don't think it will happen any time soon.

So thanks so much to Lorns for explaining the fat loss/scales bit, your advice is really really helpful, and taking the time to explain is really good of you, its much appreciated.

No exercise updates from me, ended up drinking a fair amount yesterday, but am going away tomorrow for 4 days, so hopefully will walk it off. Back in the gym on Friday.

Have a good week ahead everyone.

speedymama · 19/02/2007 09:19

Hi everyone, I weighed myself on Friday and found I had lost 2lb! I then went on to do the Bootcamp DVD by David Kirsch which was really strenuous.

The ILs visited at the weekend so was unable to do much formal exercise but I monitor my diet. I made a delicious Lemon Tart as well as a banana cake so I just hard a small portions.

My next opportunity to do any lengthy exercise will be Wednesday so until then, I will just spend 5 minutes in the morning doing crunches and press ups.

MrsFish · 19/02/2007 09:46

Hi all, still no ms here which is good. Still the same on the scales too and am now 8 weeks pregnant, so am quite pleased

Marls001 · 19/02/2007 16:30

Hi all - Lorns, DH said "It has to do with feast or famine" - a phenomena I think you've already described (but here it is again just to make sure it's the same) - "When you start eating a lesser amount your body thinks "I need to store this," then over time as you continue, it realizes it's the new norm and begins to let the weight go."

Looked through DH's "Fitness: The Complete Guide" (Int'l Sports Sciences Assoc.) Says if you've ever put yourself on a crash diet (ate less than 1200 cal/day) ... your basal metabolic rate dropped as you lost muscle weight through the diet - meaning your body permanently changed to burn less cal/day at your lower weight - meaning afterward you wouldn't be shedding more pounds, or you might regain the pounds you lost. The book advocates strength training/muscle building - the large muscles primarily - as the most important of the diet-cardio-strength triumverate for weight loss. "Bigger muscles burn more fat than little muscles. If you are losing weight from both fat and muscle, your ability to continue losing fat - and keep it off - is literally sacrificed." "Gaining muscle is the result of intensity, not the number of exercises that you perform. You very simply must work hard enough to scare your body into growing more muscle, in the fear that you might do it again (which you will)!" It says not to overwork, but concentrate on the big muscles first.

Sorry so long. Don't know what's meant by big vs small muscles - did mention as an example squats v bicep curls.

Marls001 · 19/02/2007 16:31

Still haven't weighed myself Did get to the gym and for a run this weekend though!

laloop · 19/02/2007 20:07

Hi everyone
Thanks for the weight info, Lorns and Marls.

If I'm honest with myself, I think I'm still eating/drinking too much as I'm finding it difficult sticking to my WW points - think I'm going to have to join a WW class to keep me disciplined. A bad habit of mine is going into the cafe with ds2 at the gym after my swim or workout and having a coffee and a scone, cancelling out all my efforts . Dh and I also open a bottle of red wine for a glass or two some nights, so think I'll keep this to a weekend night only as cals in alcohol are scary! I didn't have a problem losing weight after having my first 2 dc's but now that I'm at home full-time with ds2, it's soooo much more difficult to keep out of the kitchen, especially as I love baking and cooking. I really, really want to lose a few lbs....

How's everyone else today?

Lorns · 19/02/2007 20:19

Hi everyone!

Marls100 - thanks for the interpretation. Yes I was saying the same sorta things!. Some of the big muscles in the body are Quadraceps, Hamstrings, Back, chest muscles. The smaller ones are the biceps, triceps (front of arm) etc. It is good to work a muscle "to failure" whereby you feel you can't do any more. Must say Bodypump is good for this, or gym/PTs should be able to give a programme to do the same!

Hey I had a bottle of wine on Saturday night which is getting to be a regular saturday occurance!!

Laloop - why do cafe's in gyms provide unhealthy food. What are they trying to do to us all!!! I love baking as well and yes it is hard being at home with dd/ds and maintaining a healthy diet!

Hi Mrs Fish - hope you had a good time in London

Well done speedy mama - GFI!

Hi also to muckyAnthea - appreciate your comments!

laloop · 20/02/2007 10:08

Hi everyone, today is last day of lo's half-term break so will start again on the diet tomorrow - I am going to join WW in the morning
Doing lots of housework today and then taking lo's for a swim. If I have time I'll fit in Davina DVD too.

Hope you're all doing ok

snowbirdonice · 20/02/2007 15:31

Hi everyone. It's been badminton all the way for me this week, last Thursday, Sunday and again yesterday. Tonight I'll try to get to the gym and do a run (it'll be late, so won't go outside) then session with the PT on Thursday - be good to do something different

Forgot to say I was 1lb down on Friday, so half way there. Aiming for another 2lb this week to be in with a chance of reaching my target 10lbs loss by early March. I'm finding the looming deadline a good motivator

Lorns/Marls, thanks for the continuing info, I find it really helful.

Hi Laloop, running this week? I'm aiming for 5k again tonight then up it next week

snowbirdonice · 20/02/2007 15:32

It's skibump btw, must change that back

laloop · 20/02/2007 15:44

Hi skibump, good on you for heading out for a run tonight. It'll be the weekend before I get the cahnce to get out again, half-term here. No weight loss this week, I have been baking loads of goodies with the dc's. But I'm joining WW class tomorrow again so hoping that I can get back into the weight loss. Well done on another 1lb!

tenbygirl · 20/02/2007 17:29

I last went for a run last Friday and Saturday. Then on Sunday I went swimming also and had an easy bike ride with DD.

I started out for a run this afternoon and only did 3 mins before coming home - my legs were killing me! Have I not rested enough? I've only really been running a couple of weeks.

Overtiredmum · 20/02/2007 17:36

Hi all - well done everyone - keep up the hard work!

Am still really enjoying my Turbo Jam DVD. It really seems to be doing wonders for my depression and mood swings. I even managed to do the 40 minute Cardio Jam yesterday although there is plenty of room for improvement . Am on my second week of lo-GI detoxing and I was amazed at how loose my work trousers were when I put them on yetserday....... even DH commented on how baggy they were around my bum when I got home last night, which made me feel even better!

PeckaRolloverAgain · 20/02/2007 17:41

overtiredmum, tell me a bit more about the turbo jam dvd?

Overtiredmum · 20/02/2007 17:55

Hiyya Pecka. Well........ it comes with two DVDs and has four workouts. Learn and Burn, where you learn the core 11 moves and then a small workout to practice them. The next is a 20 minute workout which uses all muscle groups in your body. Then there are two routines, one Body Sculpt (which I haven't tried yet) and another Ab Jam which works obviously on the ab section. Finally is a Cardio Jam, which is a 40 minute fat burning cardio workout. It is all based on kick-boxing and dance and is such good fun. I was suffering from depression and bad mood swings when I ordered it. My GP wanted me on anti depressants, which I didn't really want to try. But it has really helped. No arguments in my household since I have been doing it. It is quite expensive at forty pounds and admittedly I was slightly sceptical about it when I first got it, but it really has changed my outlook. I have been struggling to lose weight since I had DS two years ago, even with WW and SW. But hopefully things are starting to improve and most importantly, I FEEL great!

Marls001 · 20/02/2007 22:04

Overtired - which ADs are you on, just out of curiosity (if you don't mind)?
Mine (Wellbutrin) are hideously expensive too; ours are mostly covered by insurance program though ... I had postpartum with DS1 so they were begun as a precaution with DS2. They're miracle workers. Glad to hear they are working so well for you.

Overtiredmum · 20/02/2007 22:17

Hi Marls. No, I am not on ADs. GP suggested that I should because she thought it would help. Someone suggested this exercise DVD that they had used and I thought I would give it a go first and I am so pleased that it is helping. I didn't even suffer pmt like I normally do either. Its alot of kicking and punching combined with dance, and it really seems to help. My mood is just so much more positive. Mr DH used to ring me during the day and I would be sobbing, but for no apparent reason..... that hasn't happened since I started.

Marls001 · 21/02/2007 03:21

Sorry overtired ... misread! Even better for you that exercise is helping!

laloop · 21/02/2007 09:03

Morning everyone, hoping to make it back to WW today. Not feeling great, think I might be coming down with something, but if well enough I will try to fit in a Davina session today

Lorns · 21/02/2007 12:47

Hi everyone. Beautiful day here! I was on a mission today to preassure wash very large and dirty patio areas etc. After dropping DS1&2, hired washer and got it home. Ds3 was delighted to play in the garden!

Found the window cleaners at my house (didn't want me to splash windows (or did I with the amount they charge - they are good tho)! Switched on the machine (or tried to - kept cutting out and water pressure was minimal (could just draw my name with the jet sort of thing). The hire co came out with another machine which was better for all of 1 minute. In the end they gave me my money back and told me to get my outside tap thu the mains supply so just waiting for a plumber! Was really looking forward to getting stuck into this today for the satisfaction (and also the exercise)! Will resort to cleaning wooden floors and cleaning internal windows!!

You know it's great getting paid for exercising, but because it's not time for me and required hours of prep (choreography etc) I sadly miss attaining some of the endorphins. I'd love to go for a run or do something for myself.... Too busy teaching...!

Overtiredmum - I'm taking st. Johns wort as I'm suffering from bad PMT after my DS3. Have been on AD after DS2. I know my moods arn't helped my lack of sleep, DH working miles away from where we live (5 hours travelling) and DS1 with AS! I know tho if I didn't do any exercise I'd be in a much worse state. SO pleased the DVD's are working .

Welcome tenbygirl. I'd say your muscles are tired through training 3 days in a row. If time permits it would be good to exercise every other day or just 2 days in a row. If exercising 2 days in a row it is good to do say cardiovascular one day and strength/toning the other.

Well done for running. Don't be afraid to do a combo of running and walking. Initially you can get your heart rate up my just walking fast and if you have any going up hills! Please see other messages for more help of exercising and running!

Laloop - hope you feel better soon. Glad your DC are back at school!!!

skibump · 21/02/2007 13:44

Hi all. I only managed about 30 mins in the gym last night befor emy body said 'no more'! Back there again tomorrow, but after a rest day, so should be better.
Hi Laloop, hope you're feeling better soon
Overtired, well done you, I think we all agree that exercise helps improve your mood. I might try to get hold of those DVD's myself - it's useful when ds is napping and I'm tied to the house
Tenbygirl - hey, another runner but I certainly think you shouldn't plan to run more than every other day at the MOST to make sure your body has time to react (reference Lorns?)

Lorns · 21/02/2007 15:52

Hi just to clarify the 2 days in a row. Try not to exercise more than 2 days in a row in a week!
