Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

OP posts:
paulaplumpbottom · 30/05/2007 18:08

I think you could also get a really cheap one at Tescos and then get a better one if you like it

Lorns · 30/05/2007 20:45

Hi to everyone. Wow what a lot of postings! .

Well done everyone on your exercise - even if it's housewrk!!

Hi to JenT and Abroller.

Pecka - congratson pregnancy. I've had a miscarriage and then bledd at about 10 weeks - quite heavily. I had complete bed rest for 2 weeks (well didn't exercise) and then was fine until the end of my pregnancy [smile. However, if you hvae been bleeding periodically I would wait until doing more than gentle walking until 12 weeks or you have a good period without bleeding. If you wanted you could do some upper body work (no press ups or abdominals). Maybe a FEW squats, but walking up and down the stairs would be more beneficial. JUST DON'T OVER DO IT. IT WON'T BE FOR LONG!

Hi JenT! Great that you are attending an exercise class.

It would be good to have a plan of action. Do you want to join a gym, attend comunity exercise classes, walk/run/swim, or a home exercise routine? You could do a mixture all all of these. Does the gym near you have a creche????

Ideally it is good to exercise 3-5 times a week - even if it's a brisk wall around the block. Cardiovascular exercise should mean that you should be fairly puffed within the time frame you are exercising in. This might just be for 10 minutes at the start. If you want to speed youe metabolic rate up then resistance work (getting the right weight so it is challenging but achievable) is the one to do!

BTW what exercise class do you do/want to do? Hope this helps?

Abroller - well done on exercsing every day but your body needs rests. If you gave yourself 2/3 days rest then your body will want to work harder on the days you exerice (untill DC get you up and you're tired !

I would recommend increasing your x-trainer time if you can. this might only be 2 minutes more to start with, but you just increase when you are ready.

If you have time it might be worth going theough all the postings to see if there is anything you can use....??

OrmIrian - have you got anywhere that does Body Combat near you (local sports centre)? This is a mixture of Karate, Boxing Mai Tai etc. It's great and motivation. You just imagine that your Lara Croft and the people you are fighting are the same height as you. It's non-contact and you get your heart rate up also!

3andnomore - women and weights. Does she say why? What a load of ..... Guess I definitely don't agree!!!

laloop/jenT - LOL re iron

AbRoller · 30/05/2007 20:53

hi Lorns, tnx for the welcome and advice.

I have a HATE/HATE relationship with the X-trainer but I trust you. will report back tomorrow

speedymama · 31/05/2007 09:28

I'm feeling really good today. DH told me last night that I'm looking much slimmer and even my PIL asked if I had been losing weight (they have not seen me for 6 weeks).

The exercising and dieting is really paying off. I went to a meeting yesterday and the skirt I wore was really loose - normally it pinches my waist. This is amazing because I started my period in the afternoon and my tummy is always swollen before I start.

Since I've just started my period I won't be able to exercise until Monday or Tuesday.

Have a good day everyone.

OrmIrian · 31/05/2007 10:18

lorns - thankyou. Yes DH's gym does body combat classes. It does sound interesting and I'd like to give it a go. I've been thinking about tai chi as well - started a different thread but not much interest - anyone know anything about that. I like the idea of learning a discipline that something more to it than just exercise iyswim.

speedymama - well done! It's great when your clothes start to fit properly again.

laloop · 31/05/2007 11:29

Morning everyone

Dragged myself out for a run last night despite feeling washed out. Was the best thing to do because I'd forgotten how GREAT exercise is for giving you a boost when you feel run down And I ran three miles in 26 minutes, yayyyy!!! (But then came home and ate a curry and drank 2 glasses of wine while watching the Apprentice)

All set now for the Race for Life 5k on Sunday. Is anyone else taking part in their local one? I have to run a full mile uphill at the beginning of our one

Still no Tae bo DVD - hopefully its en route across the Irish Sea as we speak as I can't believe how excited I am about trying out a new exercise DVD thanks to all you enthusiasts

OrMirian, sorry I'm clueless about Tai Chi so I'm no use to you, sorry. Do they have some classes nearby that you could go to for a trial?

I'm off now to book some creche sessions at the gym for next week.

Lorns · 31/05/2007 12:52

Hi everyone!

So pleased for your speedy

Laloop- glad you percevered! Wasn't the Apprentice great - those start jumps on the trampoline were classic, and also I eventually caught on to what Sir Alan was talking about when he said "look what he's resting it on" when screwing on the legs! LOL .

Sadly I can't do the Race for Life as I'm unable to run due to persistant pain in the whole of my back. I'm getting tested for Ostoporosis Usually when someone has a back problem we say it's due to lack of exercise or poor posture which needs correcting. Not so in my case.....

OrmIrian - BodyCombat is really fast in places but once the techniques are mastered is GREAT! As for Tai Chi I teach something which is called Bodybalance. This is a mixture of Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates si I know a little about it.

Tai Chi has a very dedicated number of followers who really love the graceful flowing movements. Give it a go.....

speedymama · 31/05/2007 13:03

Hi Lorns, The Apprentice was brilliant wasn't it? As for Katie's comment about those magic knickers type things being for women called Mavis who can't be bothered to diet, well, I hope she keeps her body in tip top shape.

Sorry to hear about your back and I pray it is not down to osteoporosis. Good luck with the tests.

laloop · 31/05/2007 13:13

Was definitely classic TV - Simon screwing on the legs of the trampoline - lol...LOL...still LOL'ing
And don't get me started on Katie, who does she think she is slagging everyone off

Lorns, so sorry to hear you're having problems with your back. My thoughts are with you for the tests.

paulaplumpbottom · 31/05/2007 13:24

Did loads of housework this morning at high speed and then went for a walk at a good pace. Planning on dragging my stationary bike out of the closet this evening

JenT · 31/05/2007 17:14

Ooh am loving the apprentice and with one or two exceptions I really think the right person has gone each week.
Have been out and about for 6 hours today mostly walking with the buggy and board (with 2 stops one for coffee and one for lunch)
now about to start tackling the european washing mountain, surely ironing must burn some calories!

laloop · 01/06/2007 08:48

Morning everyone
How are you all today?

This morning I am going to spend a couple of hours on the housework and laundry, it's neverending Will put on music to make it a bit more bearable. Ds2 is a great "helper" too, goes along behind me pretending to tidy and dust but making even more of a mess

Then going to the gym before school run - going to do a 40 minute workout using the rower/treadmill/weights machines.

Lovely day here so might take the children out to the park later (or chuck them out to the garden while I read a magazine lol).

What's everyone else up to?

3andnomore · 01/06/2007 14:01

Hi there...well..been a tad lazy today...am completely out of sync, sigh....but dh will go back to Afghanistan today, so, will get back on track again...my mum isn't a great eater, so, should be easy enough then
Have won a few more Exercise DVD's on E-Bay and am bidding on a few more.
Have won Kate's Cardio Combat and The Hollywood Workout , got them pretty cheap, too...so...hopefully they will be good
Also bidding on Nell's Peak Energy, Taebo Everybody get ripped, Charlie Brooks before and After workout,The Jordan Workout and Fighting Fit Fighting Fat Club With Harvey Walden...lets see which ones I get....I doubt I will win them all!
Want to get Vicky Entwistles one too, as that seems to be really good, but at the moment it's a bit pricey!
Hope all you others do a bit better then I do at the mo, lol!

laloop · 01/06/2007 15:08

Hi 3anm
Given the circs you're definitely allowed to take it easy today!
Good luck on the ebay bidding, we'll be looking forward to your comments on the DVDs

I went to the gym and did 15mins interval training on the treadmill. Was going from 9km/hr to 11km/hr and then in momentary madness stuck it up to 11.5 (NEVER again!!!) for half a minute (super-fast pace also not helped by my mp3 player putting on a very mellow Oasis song at this point ).
Also did 15 mins on the crosstrainer and then a quick blast on the hip abductor machines.

Gym again in the morning (but for relaxation, going to swim and spapool). Quick uphill run planned tomorrow afternoon to get me in gear for Sunday's 5K. Then take it easy for a day or two.

yoyo · 01/06/2007 23:54

Have been caught up in half term mayhem. Have now bought the trainers - needed the stability so got the Asics. The last couple of times I have been to the gym my ankles, shins and knees have been painful so have obviously needed a new pair. They cost a fortune so will have to keep going to the gym or will feel incredibly guilty.

Life gets back to normal next week and am looking forward to doing my Pilates class and working on the running. Just need to work out how to overcome my boredom on the treadmill (other than by using the iPod).

laloop · 02/06/2007 16:10

Hi yoyo
The new trainers will make a massive difference, I promise they'll be worth the investment as your joints will be very grateful

I get a bit bored on the treadmill too, I find the first 5 or 10 minutes the worst for some reason then I get into my stride. I find it helpful to put the treadmill on a random hill programme, even if it's just on the lowest level on the machine. Makes it a bit more interesting as you push yourself to get up the inclines then get your breath back a bit on the flat. Also varying the speed is also good as you can start challenging yourself by knocking the speed up a little bit for a quick blast every so often to see how you get on.

I've just been out for an uphill mile in preparation for tomorrow's 5k. It was tough-going as I got near to the top but I managed it, used speedy's "just keep putting one foot in front of the other" psychology

Hope you're all having a nice weekend

rhysmiamum · 02/06/2007 17:49

Hi, hope you don't mind me gatecrashing...!

I am a reg on the SW thread but about 5 weeks ago I joined a gym and have been going about 1/2 a week (that's amazing for me because I rarely have anyone to have DC).

So as I can't go every other day or whatever the most effective is, I have been using my exercise bike for 30 mins every other day (sometimes every day) but when I mentioned this to the trainer at my gym induction he said "don't bother it won't make a difference" but I always get out of breath and work up a sweat so it can't be completely useless, can it??

Cheers
rhysmiamum

yoyo · 02/06/2007 21:44

laloop - hope the pains disappear now that I have my flashy shoes! I have been varying the speeds but haven't done the hills option. I will give it a go tomorrow. I have found that I love doing short, rather fast (for me) spurts but suspect that this is not increasing my stamina. Good luck with the 5 km tomorrow - that is my aim in the not too distant future.

Lorns · 02/06/2007 22:58

Hi rhysmiamum. I can't beleive the instuctor said this. Ask him to justify WHY he said it! The national guidelines for exercise are that a person should exercise 20-30 minutes at least 3-5 times a week. I'm astounded! You're doing GREAT

OP posts:
laloop · 03/06/2007 12:50

Hi everyone

Hi Rhysmiamum, I agree with Lorns - your exercise routine sounds fine, well done Only reason I can think that he may have said that (and this is a complete guess!) is if he was referring to exercising to help speed up weight-loss, as the bike would maybe be helping cardiovascular fitness rather than fatburning depending on your heart rate (Lorns or speedy might be able to explain this better and in more detail). Keep up the good work, you'll soon be seeing the results from your efforts

I did the Race for Life 5k this morning in miserable, drizzly rain. My time was 28mins 37secs so I'm happy enough with that given the hill and the weather

Now in training for a 10k (HELP!!!)

Hope you all have a nice day.

paulaplumpbottom · 03/06/2007 13:19

Well done Laloop! Its nasty outside today. I haven't done much today but houseworks as my little one is ill.

rhysmiamum · 03/06/2007 13:47

Thanks for the advice !! I was starting to feel like I couldn't count the 30 mins bike exercises 'cos "it wasn't making a difference".!!

Wow- well done laloop - impressive!

3andnomore · 04/06/2007 07:50

wow at the race for life...5Km in under 30 minutes...don't think I could ever do that, tbh!
Well...now the Holidays are over, hopefully I get back a bit into my routine...done Davinas Power of 3 just now...but blinking heck, it's amazing how quickly your fitness level drops....I still could do it, but got a bit puffed out.
Oh, had gotten that Hollywood workout...rofl, I did all 3 workouts (which are only 60 minutes altogether anyway) and as there is no cardio involved, I wasn't even sweating....I think combined with a Tae Bo workout done before and your own cooldown, it cold work, lol..but on it's on...what a load of tosh....and the cheesy grin of the guy and her stupid comments and her "phew" in a sort of sexy turn on way....well...what can I say, lol!
Just wondering, I am sure I am not the only Exercise DVD addict...would it be worth having a lil thread where people review different Exercise DVD's they have? THe good the bad and the ugly, lol!
Shold be getting my Kates Cardio Combat today or tomorrow, I suppose...so, hopefully that will e good, and also won The Fit/Fat club Harvey Dvd and Nell's Peak something or other Workout....so, lots more to try!
Also bought myself the 10 Best Fitness one, at Morrisons...hasn't got great reviews, but well, I am sure there will be the odd workout that I can use, lol! I don't mind garish 80's stuff!
Besty be off, got Kids to get ready!

speedymama · 04/06/2007 08:44

Hi everyone. I have done no exercise since Thursday because of my period so I'm hoping to do a two mile run tomorrow before I go to work.

Well done Laloop on your run. That was an excellent time and you must be thrilled. Good luck with the training for the 10k.

Rhysmiamum, your fitness instructor does not know what he is talking about I'm afraid. The exercise bike helps to develop cardiovascular fitness, lower body strength and power, balance, ankle and foot flexibility. The main disadvantage about the execise bike is that it is not effective at maintaining bone density but that is why one cross-trains. Running and working out with weights takes care of building as well as maintaining bone density. Sounds to me your trainer needs to increase his grey matter density.

3andnomore, a little thread reviewing exercise DVDs is a great idea. I'll start one if you like. You are really going for it on the DVD front. As they say, variety is the spice of life. I have over 24 (video and DVD) so I'm like you. Actually, I recently purchased Nell McAndrew's Ultimate Challenge after your recommendation so I now have the full set of her DVDs.

speedymama · 04/06/2007 09:34

I've started a thread here to review exercise DVDs so get posting please!
