Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

Thanks speedy mama,

Starting a diary, inches are going rather than weight right now.

speedymama · 14/03/2007 16:28

Found this link which explains all the ab exercises from the ACE study. Scroll down to see the top 10, click on links and explanations follow.

Now you can work on getting your dream abs.

Hi everyone
Some great info here today, thanks.

Pecka, hope you're feeling better soon - a week off from the exercise for a trip away (lucky thing!!) and being not well isn't too bad - you'll be back into your old exercise routine soon I'm sure. And you're still losing weight .

I am trying so hard not to spend the evening munching crisps and drowning my sorrows with a pintglass of red wine - I put on 1.5lbs at WW today, grrrrrr!!! Going to take my frustration out at the gym instead - rower, treadmill run then few reps on the weights machines. Will then go for a quick swim and spa pool - anything but EAT

laloop · 14/03/2007 23:03

Back from gym, had a nice workout

5 mins warmup on rower
2km random hill run on treadmill (interval speeds 8.5km/hr to 10.5km/hr)
12 reps on lat pulldown machine
25 reps each on the two hip abductor machines
10 mins on crosstrainer
1km swim (30lengths frontcrawl/20lengths breaststroke)

Going to have a good read at the info on the abs link

Hi everyone! Just managed to get a weigh-in today and ... I have just about reached my goal !! Was 11 stone when delivered DS2 on Sept. 3rd ... over the months have been steadily losing by mostly exercising (can't handle dieting) ... had always been 8 stone 2 & was despairing of ever getting there again.

Well ... I knew was fitting back into old clothes but ... am 8 stone 3! And 19% fat! ... a big improvement over the last month. And pretty much where I want to be.

Lorns .. turns out I had overbuilt my stomach muscles ... have a tendency to build muscle tissue easily. So what trainer at gym told me to do was lay off directly exercising abs & concentrate instead on cardio. Now it's nearly flat ... of course, I'll always have a bit of a pooch; even before children and in college (at 7 stone 6) I had one. Pretty happy as is right now.

Biglips · 15/03/2007 09:13

hiya all..

had a good cardio workout last nite...i was starved by the time i came home as i had no tea before i went...just a banana.... What snacks can i have before i hit the gym? as i like to go around about 5pm after my Dp come home from work.

last nite (i cant remember most names of the equipments) will have a look on my card next time and did 1.5 hours...really enjoyed it.

Biglips · 15/03/2007 09:13

Biglips · 15/03/2007 10:43

oh...i came home last nite with my forehead in spots !!!!....my Dp said that it will go once you become healthier - gggrrr!!!!

prettyfly1 · 15/03/2007 11:05

lo ladies, my two uni nights are now done so i am free to indulge in some excersize this evening ( no excuses for not doing it in other words!) i shall be in touch tomorrow so should i have found an out once more i expect a reprimand

sarz · 15/03/2007 11:48

For once in my life i am really craving to go out and run, but karate lesson last night was full focus on legs, and today they really ache!!! I think i will just go to the gym later and do a light session on the treadmill. I'm just made because it ruins my running program, now i finally have one!!!

sarz · 15/03/2007 11:51

Biglips! Lol at the spots!!! i ALWAYS have a rash like thing on the right side of my face after a good work out, and that also happens to be the time i bump into people i know and get the 'whats wrong with your face??' or worse, horrifed gasps!!! Regards the snacks, i always eat a banana about half an hour before i go and then a handful of sultans when i get to the gym, its not to heavy but great for energy!

speedymama · 15/03/2007 13:39

Mars, congratulations on the weight loss and for gaining the flat tum.

I went for a 2 mile run this morning and shaved 1 minute of my time so I am delighted. Afterwards I did 3/4 of the 10minute bootcamp DVD by Kelly Roberts where each section is divided into 10 minutes. I did the bums/leg/thigh, abs, upper body and cardio blast sections. I was completely worn out after that.

I decided to go for some retail therapy as I have not bought new clothes for a long time and spent £200 on a new lemon suit, a couple of skirts, two pair of shoes and a dress. That's my spending for the year completed.

OrmIrian · 15/03/2007 14:04

Well done speedymama! I got my run down to 15 mins on Tuesday. Due to not being able to get out of the house as early as usual 'cos DS#1 had lost my keys and a grumpy DH who was afraid he'd be late for work. Am planning a much longer run on Sunday as I have more time - to test my theory that it's not tiredness but lack of time that prevents me running further . We'll see.

OrmIrian · 15/03/2007 14:05

sarz - what kind of karate do you do? Just curious as until I started I had no idea there was so many different flavours .

sarz · 15/03/2007 18:34

i do GKR, but people on here seemed to very against GKR, but i love it, and i never started it to become a karate world champion, just to get fit, more self esteem and some self defence, which i did!! i really love it though!! what do you do?

OrmIrian · 15/03/2007 18:56

Ooooh.... I think I've heard some rude things about it too but as I'm totally ignorant I'm happy to beleive that it's wonderful . I do Wado Ryu which is apparently very traditional. I did have a look at a franchise sort of school that does a mixture of kick boxing and TKD but it was outrageously expensive and very very commercial. But atm I'm wondering if I should be trying somewhere at bit more commercial and a bit less purist. We'll see....

CODalmighty · 15/03/2007 18:57

haev got spotty chest

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 15/03/2007 20:53

Well I ran 2 miles today in 23 mins. I know its not the fastest time ever, but a fair bit of that was uphill. So I'm really chuffed with myself.

Just want to get up to 3 miles now.

Upsadaisy · 15/03/2007 21:49

Ooh can I join? Just joined a gym last week...in hope of toning up and shifting some weight.

Biglips · 16/03/2007 09:46

welcome upadaisy

what have u done up to now on exercise wise?

Upsadaisy · 16/03/2007 10:17

Thanks Biglips.
Just cardio work on the treadmill and crosstrainer so far. I'm so un fit, i go an industrial shade of red if I push myself so taking it slowly.
I've been playing squash every other week for a while and I used to be a strong swimmer.

Anyone have any tips or advice about starting off?

Biglips · 16/03/2007 10:22

have u got a personal trainer at the gym? as they will help u to see whats the best equipment for your needs....also i need to go swimming too whilst im not at the gym

laloop · 16/03/2007 13:03

Hi everyone
You're all doing really well. Welcome upsadaisy. Can't get to gym today so think I'll do the Davina DVD later (need to get onto Amazon to get some new exercise DVDs!).

OrmIrian · 16/03/2007 13:10

Hmmm.... how far and how fast do I have to run to get rid of the 3 chocolate fairy cakes I just ate? . They were lovely and it wasn't my fault. DS#2 made me make them with him and they were all hot and lovely out of the oven...

However I genuinely do feel thinner - as if there is less around my middle. Am wondering if I will actually lose bulk with regular running even if I don't actually diet. I guess the cakes will probably put the kibosh on that though

Marls001 · 16/03/2007 13:47

Orm - you will. I think that's the best of both worlds - movement, and eat what you want.
