Does holding on to your large clothes subconsciously make you fail to keep the weight off

My other half goes up and down like a yoyo with his weight.
I was thinking should I get rid of his clothes that are too big for him. If they are there does he subconsciously believe he'll fail and then does. If they are gone will it make him feel more positive about maintaining his weight.
