i think different things work for different people, but in general:

some carbs are ok, best to substitute brown and wholemeal for white bread/rice/pasta and limit your portion size

best things to eat - veg and fruit, fresh, raw or lightly cooked; lean protein - fish, chicken, soya

cheese has always been my downfall

for me, a combination of walking, swimming and rowing/running always got the lard off. rowing is especially good.

My mantras:

  1. don't eat anything white! (bread, pasta etc... go for brown)
  2. refined sugar (cakes etc) are treats to be had rarely but enjoyed when you do.
  3. to lose weight do 40+ minutes of cardio exercise, if you can't continue for 40 mins then go slower, but do 40 minutes to really get in the fat burning zone
  4. do some weight training exercise if you are confident enough - the more muscle you have the higher your metabolic rate
  5. drink water (if you're dehydrated you can't burn fat) and herbal teas (fennel tea is good for stopping you feeling hungry)
  6. don't think of it as a diet but the way you choose to live your life.
  7. it takes 12 weeks for your body to really start changing so stick with it.
