Stupid question about converting pounds to stones.

Maths was never my strong point so I am struggling to understand this.

Finally lost a few pounds this week after weeks of trying. Scales says 137 pounds.

So since I prefer old money I wanted to convert into stones. The online weight convertor ( and i tried a few) says this is 9.785. Yippee I thought I am now 9 and a half stone! However quiclkly realised that this could not be the case since there are 14 pounds in a stone so is must be 9 stone 11! Not quite the same.

What's happening here? I think I am right but was disappointed not to be nine and half stone!

Obviously I can just stick to pounds in the future but was just wondering.

Are the using some decimal system and it is a proportion on ten?

9.785 stone means 9 stone and 78.5% of s stone, not 9 st 7lb

Stones are not decimal.

I generally do

137/14 =9.7857
9 x 14 = 126
137 - 126 = 11

9 stone 11 pound

Quick and easier though is typing pounds to stone in Google and getting a converter up. That's just the way I do it in my head

You are right 9 stone 11lbs.

I'd so 137/14 = 9.785 so you know you are 9 stone something,

Then work out 9 x 14 = 126lbs

Then 137 -,126 to get the lbs bit of 11lbs

except my numbers are substantially higher so if my scales said 137lbs I'd change the battery

Stones aren't decimal so you are right in your thought that you are actually 9 stone 11lbs.

Thats what I thought it might be Bike. I understand stones are not a decimal despite my rubbish maths.
I am just a bit bemused that a convertor would not give you result in stones and pounds. I will work it out in my head from now on, but I do like to see the numbers written down on my ipad for some reason.

Oh well onwards towards 9 st 7!
