Does anyone else lose weight more easily when they drink?

I do, regular red wine intake and I find the weight drops off really easily if I stay within my calorie allowance. When I'm not drinking, it's far harder.

I believe alcohol lowers your blood sugar so reduces your insulin response which might make a difference.

Not that I'm advocating drinking for weight loss! I was just curious if it affects anyone else in the same way?

Where did you find out that alcohol lowers blood sugar as I am pretty sure it is entirely the opposite?

janethegirl2 · 18/02/2016 20:06

If it works for you Megan, go for it.

I might give it a try as I need to lose weight and I like red wine. What calorie allowance do you work to?

I had gestational diabetes and the diabetic nurse told me. Apparently it's why you eat when you're drunk.

I stick to 1200 cals jane

Given as most alcohol is practically made of sugar it's possible you're incorrect. I find after a glass or 2 of red wine I'm not that hungry. Perhaps it's suppressing your appetite if you're only having one.

Yes, I do as well. But I put it down to the fact I drink the odd glass of wine instead of other more fattening treats.

springscoming · 18/02/2016 20:16

Drinking has the opposite effect for me as I lose all sense of restraint after once glass of wine Sad

Ok I did a bit of research and see where you are (all) coming from.

A BIT of alcohol can dramatically lower your blood sugar level due to the quick release of insulin (because it is SO sugary!). It won't make you lose weight sa a standalone thing but if you eat low calories you will always lose weight, regardless. Lots of us (me included) get the munchies when we have had a drink, that could be due to the low blood sugar or just because we lose inhibitions and rational thinking and will power. So for me, it's out if I need to lose fat and get healthy.

I was just doing some research too: www.diabetes.co.uk/alcohol-and-blood-sugar.html

It appears it usually lowers your blood sugar but can raise it in some.

Wombat, I think you're right in the appetite suppressant thing. I sometimes lose interest in food if I've had a drink. Not always though!
