Fitbit - can anyone tell me if they're useful?

I keep reading about them there Fitbits. I'm not very technologically advanced but am wondering what they do and how might they assist me? I've been considering getting a pedometer but these look like they count steps and more.

Can anyone who has a Fitbit tell me what they do and what the benefits are? Are they easy to use, etc?

Thanks in advance!

It will still work without the app. When you get the app it will sync the data.
Fitbit has a desktop site so you don't need the app really
The 700 calories it says you've burned will be what it estimates you've burned (just from being alive -BMR-) from midnight till you've started using it.

Thanks, mrswhiskers, have clipped it to my person so will live with it for a while. I'm all a-dither with this thing now.
