Surely running up and down the stairs for 5 minutes must count for more than 5 minutes of jogging?

What excuse can people have for jogging then-unless they don't have stairs? Also jogging can have nasty implications for your knees because of impact damage but maybe this worry is reduced if you stick to stairs.

Lol I've been 'jogging' for years and for more than 5 minutes at a time! My knees are fine thankyou but in answer to your question it's a little more scenic out there in the autumn sunshine than it is on the stairs at work and races with hundreds of other runners are much easier on trails and roads.

DesertorDessert · 30/09/2015 13:09

I'd have thought stairs were worse than jogging for knees?
Anyway, I don't have any here, and its too hoooooot to run outside, so going to have to be the dreaded treadmill for me Sad

Because they enjoy it ?! Confused

yumyumpoppycat · 30/09/2015 16:06

I think you're winding us up stitches... do you follow it up with a hot bath Grin

StitchesBurstinBath · 30/09/2015 17:27

no yumyum- ive been advised against the merits of a hot bath. So untill I can find an expert telling me I was right about that I have to find something else
But I don't think another human being should see me out of breath.

'I'd have thought stairs were worse than jogging for knees?'

But you put more effort going up the stairs than going down and on the way up you dont bring your feet down as much. On the way down you can brace your self on the bannister- thus reducing impact damage.

'it's a little more scenic out there in the autumn sunshine than it is on the stairs '

Psychotropic- leaving aside scenery then do yo concede that scientifically 5 minutes of stairs must be healthier than 5 minutes of jogging outside? And also yes, the weather is nice right now-but often its not.

'Healthier'? I suspect we don't have a shared definition of that term op! Running up and down stairs brings its own risks, I suspect more research is needed into injury rates from doing a 10k or a half marathon on the stairs compared with the trails or road running. It could be interesting!

psychotropic · 30/09/2015 17:40

It's actually much nicer to run when the weather is bad than when it's good. Strange but true! Who is trying to make you run though? Why can't you just go to a spin class or do metafit or Zumba or some other exercise?

StitchesBurstinBath · 30/09/2015 17:56

mostly I need to get healthy but at the gym it seems full of slim people and I just feel out of breath walking up a hill- when I pass people who are walking down hill they have scored a point of me- even though they might not have been trying to. Jogging seems as though I would be giving people in traffic jams something to laugh at.
I cant afford, or even find room for some kind of treadmill . So making use of the stairs seems a good option.
btw- i don't know what any of the things you referred to were
