I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

iquitsugar.com/recipe/coco-nutty-granola/

This looks nice, without the syrup...

Doilooklikeatourist · 14/05/2015 21:49

weasel I fill in my food diary on my fitness pal , it adds all the sugar , fat , sodium etc

I loooove total Greek full fat yoghurt , add some berries to it or some freshly squeezed orange juice

On day 11 now , found a 21 day challenge online and I'm feeling great

Probably because I've just had a bowl of fresh strawberries and cream

Dowser · 14/05/2015 22:15

I must be at 14-16 days now.

Got used to it.

Not feeling great. Crawled to docs for full spectrum blood tests. Hopefully mouthing serious there.

Dowser · 14/05/2015 22:28

Nothing. Grrr

Bellenddingdong · 15/05/2015 05:57

Morning everybody. I made my own rules up about quitting sugar. Here they are:

  1. keep out of the biscuit tin
  2. keep out of the sweet tin
  3. no more hot chocolate at work
  4. no more binging until I feel sick
  5. allow myself the odd treat and be able to stop

Today will be my 8th day, I am feeling fab and my cravings have gone. Day 4 gave me massive headaches and I dreamt one night I was eating a snickers bar, but I am feeling good.

I am still eating fruit and I have had a slice homemade cake. For me life would be too miserable without the odd treat of cake. I have given up my daily binges which is massive for me. I have lost 1lb too,

It's all good !

AliaMairns · 15/05/2015 06:54

I am definitely feeling more energetic, although I must confess I did cheat to try the new peanut butter cornetto a few days ago. ConfusedConfusedConfused

Hi everyone, reading all your posts with great interest. I've been ill for some time, on the mend now, but was almost house bound for 6 months. Although my appetite was decreased, I pigged all day on chocolate, biscuits, cake, crisps, general rubbish.
One day, around the time I was getting better, I had some cheap chocolate that tasted stale. I still ate the whole lot though. But that was the last chocolate I ate, 5 weeks ago. Then I just stopped eating any rubbish, didn't put sugar in my coffee, and gave up biscuits and cakes.
I don't know why or how, but I've had no bad effects, no cravings, after a lifetime of enjoying sweet things it really is a mystery.
I've recently been using MFP, eating well and feeling full, even though most days I'm not using all my calories.
However, the fruit I eat, plus the milk I use (I do overestimate and just put 500mls in, which I would only use up if having porridge) is still amounting to app 40g per day.
I don't want to give up fruit as I have diverticula disease which makes me paranoid about constipation. But how high my sugar consumption must have been before, and how on earth didn't I get diabetes?!
The biggest benefit is weight loss, I've dropped a stone already, and would like to lose another.

Dowser · 15/05/2015 08:38

Well done cherry tree. Sorry to hear about your illness.

A stone is a fantastic loss in five weeks.

Just gone and worked it out from an actual calendar and tomorrrow is the start of my fourth week.

Wow. 21 days without chocolate, sweets or gluten fre cakes.

Don't feel like I've lost weight as I've eaten more nuts but time will tell.

Dowser · 15/05/2015 08:42

My feeling is cherry tree that the sugar found naturally in food in small amounts is ok it's added sugar , like white refined sugar beet sugar that is the poison.

I still have an apple a day. Carrots and sweet potatoes are sweet and onions as well.
I appreciate their sweetness.

I no longer feel deprived I just can't be bothered with it all. It's all junk and my body needs good food now.

hippospot · 15/05/2015 10:35

Hi everyone

I'm on day 7 and I don't particularly crave sugar any more. (The week before my period will be the test though!) I never would have imagined I could do it - I have a major sweet tooth and eat chocolate every day, usually!

My problem is that I do a lot of exercise, and I'm struggling to get enough calories now. I've been feeling very tired. My weight is healthy and I'm sorry to be saying this on the weight loss board, I don't want to be insensitive. I am quitting sugar for other reasons (terrible skin, terrible PMS).

I think maybe I've been cutting out too many carbs (in the form of white flour) and perhaps if I continue to eat carbs but limit myself to wholegrain then it would be ok? Previously I ate lots of biscuits and I would kid myself that they were "healthy" because often they were digestives and that kind of thing.

Are you all low-carbing too, or just cutting out refined sugar? I'm struggling to understand the difference between starch and sugar. How bad is white flour actually?

By the way how is your sleep? I have slept better this week I think.

msrisotto · 15/05/2015 12:17

I'm not low carbing or anything else. Are you still having like, brown pasta/rice?

Have you tried cutting out one thing at a time to see if it makes a difference to your PMS and skin? Or did you do it all at once?

Bellenddingdong · 15/05/2015 13:15

Hi hippo, I am the same as you, exercise loads and don't have much weight to lose. I gave sugar up because I was a total addict and would scoff a bag of haribos in place of my tea.

I am still having carbs in the form of pasta and white bread. I want to stop the binges of sweets, biscuits and chocolate. These seem to be under control.

I do have to confess there was a charity cake stall at work today. I had cake.....all for a good course. I feel full and tired now. Definately don't want anymore. Lesson learned Wink

hippospot · 15/05/2015 13:31

I have just received the I Quit Sugar book, and have had a quick glance at it. It feels like I will have to become familiar with quite a few new ingredients! I have no idea if I can even find or afford half those things...

I have pretty much always eaten brown rice, brown bread and wholemeal pasta, and I do think I need those carbs so I will stick with them. In the book she certainly doesn't seem to ban bread. I will read it properly over the weekend.

For lunch I just had tinned sardines on toast (one slice), half an avocado, some cherry tomatoes, and a soft-boiled egg with asparagus dipped in, then some nuts. I like Pukka Detox "tea", it tastes really sweet at the end of a meal. I don't crave anything else. Yet!

Abraid2 · 15/05/2015 15:56

Chocolate, cake, biscuits and ice-cream were my downfall. But really only if eaten between meals. I think I could probably handle pudding at the weekend, especially at dinnertime. For me, the trigger time is 3-6pm. Right now, in fact. Where are the almonds!

Dowser · 15/05/2015 20:21

Hippopot. I'm very tired too. I've been to docs and having full spectrum of blood tests.

I always eat some carb at supper.

I've upped my magnesium and vit b intake and felt not so weary today.

chumbler · 15/05/2015 21:00

hi all Smile following with interest and thinking about downloading the book.
I'm curious, what snacks or "treats" do you have now??

chumbler · 15/05/2015 21:02

oh wait there are 2 books? do I need them both? I want to read something that'll scare me into stopping. will the books do this?

msrisotto · 15/05/2015 21:03

I'm not really snacking but I have mixed nuts on hand and fruit is fine.

Dowser · 16/05/2015 08:57

No snacks here either.

chumbler · 16/05/2015 13:43

no snacks? Confused might have natural yogurt

hevs10593 · 16/05/2015 17:03

I've been 5:2ing and successful cut out sugar but now I've become a bit obsessive and won't each anything sugary in case it leads me into a binge of biscuits and chocolate ect. I find not having it in the house solves the issue you can't have what's not there.

msrisotto · 16/05/2015 17:49

Ha bloody ha. I went to a food festival today and gave myself a day off, allowed myself to pick any sweet treat I liked because you've got to at a food festival, right?!

After yesterday when I was gasping for dessert, given the option, free reign....I couldn't choose and then didn't fancy it after all. Wtf? I am really not one of those people to find anything too sweet (seriously, never met the concept). Weird.

peachypips · 16/05/2015 19:01
  • I know I've said this a million times but my fav book is the Sweet Poison book. It's very unfaddy and normal. No good recipes, but good science and tips.

  • have you tried The supplement We Support Magnesium Ok? It's made a huge difference to me and a few mates who struggle with B vit deficiency. Not expensive either! You can get it in the supermarkets I think. Hope you feel beetr soon.

I'm a snacked and I have found that I don't really want to snack doing this. Weird. If I do want to I have been eating nuts.

I've now got to the stage where it's all too sweet for me and I don't want it anymore!!! Never thought it would happen to me! Also become a bit obsessed about not having it. My coffee came with chocolate sprinkled on it today and it put me right off.

peachypips · 16/05/2015 19:01

A SNACKER!!

Doilooklikeatourist · 16/05/2015 22:16
