I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

Cappster · 10/04/2015 13:51

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

Thanks msrisotto

A book I have recommends flavouring popcorn with things like cinnamon, mixed spice, paprika, etc. And using a little olive oil in the pan.

msrisotto · 11/05/2015 22:01

Nando's peri peri salt is nice on popcorn too :)

msrisotto · 12/05/2015 07:52

Oh, I meant to say - my skin looks great. I'm hoping it's the reduced sugar intake, will continue and see if it sticks!

AliaMairns · 12/05/2015 10:14

Oh, my skin is atrocious. I am hoping its a cleansing process and I will come out of it with clear skin haha

Must be two weeks for me now.

Im not even thinking about wobbling. The less you have the less you crave.

Even my breakfast omelette with onion tastes very sweet now.

I had a nakd bar yesterday and one the day before and had a terribly windy bloated stomach like something had triggered off ibs.

Very uncomfortable. Nakd bars are made from dates. I wonder if the sugar in them did this after days of abstinence.

Hello to the new people.

I also eat very healthily too as many of you do. Every morning I have the above omelette.

Home made soup for lunch.

Protein, veg and sweet potato or brown rice for evening meal. An apple later or maybe occasionally a gluten free cracker with some cheese.

I don't do wheat, cereals, cakes, biscuits, pasta , chocolate sweets and milk products

Boring. Muchly. But I have a vested interest in healing my digestion and this comes from years of suffering. Yesterday showed me I'm just a whisker away from doing ok to pain again.

To the lady who makes bread...spelt flour makes lovely bread and not too heavy. It's an ancient grain that hasn't been messed around with like wheat.

I love making my own hummus. What about dhal as a snack as well if you fancy something tasty.

My Asian friends used to make chat/ chadt I can't find any recipes but it was fruit salad with chickpeas and a spice in there. This is the nearest I can find but i suspect you can play around with spices until you get one you like....and no extra sugar

Just google fruit chaat

Still avoiding cakes, ice-cream, chocolate and puddings. Have had a few things with very small amounts of sugar in them, which really could not be avoided. Benecol drinks for cholesterol maintenance being one of them!

My skin is very soft. May be the additional nuts and avocado!

Dowser · 12/05/2015 15:15

Got some chick peas roasting now as I type. Half curry flavour half salt!

msrisotto · 12/05/2015 18:33

I saw this recipe for no added sugar, no real bad stuff 'ice cream' - it actually looks good!
Banana blender ice cream

AliaMairns · 13/05/2015 13:09

My poor skin has taken a turn for the worse. Horrible painful bumps on chin, neck and in my hairline. Nothing sporn worthy either Sad

Really hoping this is just where I am clearing my body of sugar but I would have thought skin would be clearer if anything Confused

Abraid2 · 13/05/2015 14:27

That looks nice, MsR!

hippospot · 13/05/2015 16:01

My skin is also bad this week and I can't blame hormones. Maybe just our bodies, as you say, clearing themselves of sugar!

I know dairy can be a trigger for spots for me which is why I'm trying to avoid going overboard on cheese and yoghurt. But it's hard!

Day 5 of no sugar here and I don't particularly miss it, but I am missing the variety I had before. I will need to be creative with snacks in particular to not get bored. I adore fruit but am limiting myself to two pieces a day.

Esssss · 14/05/2015 10:27

Can I join in for some moral support please! I'm on day 4 and craving diet coke!! I'm avoiding it though as I was totally addicted to it! I think I'm more addicted to artificial sweeteners as much as real sugar. When I had a look at myfitnesspal over the last few weeks, I was eating something like 120-150g of sugar a day!! So I'm quitting! No refined sugar, no dairy, no fruit, no artificial sweeteners. So I haven't had too bad detox symptoms although I had a splitting headache yesterday. But I am eating like a pig!! Nuts, oatcakes, hummus huge dinners and lunches....am I going to end up putting on weight???? On the positive side, I do feel somewhat calmer and not constantly searching for my next sugar hit.

weaselwithin · 14/05/2015 12:03

hi everyone Smile.

been reading your thread with interest and watched Robert Listing's talks about sugar. scary stuff. I don't think I could cut it out completely as with a 7 week old and ebf I do rely on the odd snack ( wholechocolateblock ) and the odd ready meal. I have decided to record how many grams of sugar I consume though, and would like to keep it to the 25g recommended by the world health organisation.

I wonder is it worth me reading the book if I only want to majorly reduce my sugar intake?

also does anyone know which yogurts are best for not having ridiculous amounts of sugar??

thanks all Smile

Dowser · 14/05/2015 12:42

Weasel in my experience only a total ban gets you out of the sugar spike, sugar letdown cycle because a total ban reduces the cravings that set up the spike let down process.

It's blummin horrible poison

That's what it is and a lot of baked goods have corn fructose syrup or whatever it's called which isn't even natural.

I'm over two weeks in and doing ok.

Can't say I've lost anything yet.

weaselwithin · 14/05/2015 13:07

thanks dowser

yes was wondering if I need a total detox for a couple of days at least because I do rely on it so much

not really after weight loss. just want to be healthier! and hate all the sugar cravings I have.

think it's worth me getting the book?

hippospot · 14/05/2015 14:32

I think natural yoghurt is the best. You can always add a few blueberries or raspberries although personally I have grown to adore natural yogurt. Flavoured yoghurt now tastes far too sweet (I've been eating it for years, not just since quitting sugar 6 days ago!)

My favourite is Total Greek yoghurt which is about 90% fat (I exaggerate) but it's very filling and high in protein.

weaselwithin · 14/05/2015 15:01

thanks. I do like natural yogurt, I'll give it a go. it's so frustrating all the yogurts seem to be fat free, but I love dairy and all the good dairy fat had been replaced by sugar which is much worse!!!

hippospot · 14/05/2015 15:59

Something I think is delicious is a teaspoon of ground almonds stirred into yoghurt. To me it tastes like pudding :)

Abraid2 · 14/05/2015 16:58

I LOVE that Hage (Total) Greek yoghurt, too!

And almonds in a butter form work well with it.

I have now reintroduced a third of a teaspoon of brown sugar to go on my breakfast porridge. It doesn't seem to set off cravings. I need to eat the porridge for cholesterol reasons and couldn't find anything that made it edible (to me).

Dowser · 14/05/2015 18:44

Salt? Lol. Like the scots do!

msrisotto · 14/05/2015 21:20

Hey, so i'm on day 9 no added sugar.....how long should this be for? I'm starting to crack I think. I'm used to a chocolate eclair treat on weekends :(

peachypips · 14/05/2015 21:34

Day 11 for me MsR. I'm thinking the same thing. I've had not a drop of sugar the whole time, and have lost no weight, and can't see any benefits other than my skin being better!

We can't never have cake again surely?! Or choc?! I think I'm going to try and do 8 weeks then reevaluate. At least of got my porridge as a treat!

msrisotto · 14/05/2015 21:35

Jus looking at overnight oats recipes. Damn american site - wth is dry vanilla pudding mix? Shame 'cos this looks so nice!

peachypips · 14/05/2015 21:41

I think it is cake mix!
