I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

Oh heck( voice of panic) I missed out an important line.....and they all fit! I was just emphasising all this silly sizing.

I have lost some weight but not from a genuine 20 to a genuine 8 . More like a 16-14.

The bigger sizes tend to be fixed fabrics and the smaller stretchy ones so they meet somewhere inthe middle.

Sorry for confusion ( blushes)

I have put the work I though. Thanks to this thread and the brides one. I am hoping to strat next year a stone thinner than this year.

I've ordered some clothes from the Joe brown summer sale with my Xmas money to go with mynew Xmas shoes x

Today is my grandsons birthday....so I'm not back on the wagon till tomorrow now.

NorksAreMessy · 28/11/2015 22:25

Still going strong here. No cravings, no cave-ins.
I AM planning to have a marzipan sweet from m advent calendar every day though. This is a BIG DEAL, but I have planned it and thought about it and will REALLY enjoy it because it is a proper treat.

Plain Greek yoghurt, Cambozola, nuts and apples are my go-to foods. All fairly full of calories, which means they all fill me up.
Size 14 jeans won't stay up and my norks (see username) are shrinking.

Am smugger than a smug thing in smug town on Smugday.
And I can't believe how little I miss sugar.

Thank you for being the only place in the world where I can happily boast

NorksAreMessy · 28/11/2015 22:26

Oooo, Joe Browns! I love Joe Browns but worry I am too old (51). Am I allowed?

I lost you. Just marking place. Back later.

thedevilinmyshoes · 04/12/2015 01:13

Have just started reading I Quit Sugar and someone pointed me in direction of this thread, am unlikely to catch up on the first 500 posts or so. I don't think it would be a great plan for me to intentionally lose weight but I do have a huge problem with sugar and my dietary habits offer lots of scope for improvement so will loiter here while I read the book if that's ok?

Interested to see that author has Graves' disease, any other people here have autoimmune/thyroid things they think are affected by sugar?

msrisotto · 04/12/2015 15:48

Welcome devil :) I haven't actually read the book so if there are any good tips of bits of info, please let us know

thedevilinmyshoes · 04/12/2015 17:06

Hi Smile I've only got up to about page 5 or something which is headed 'fructose is the enemy' and I kind of lost interest. But will look at it again tomorrow!

Dowser · 09/12/2015 10:33

Norks..you are doing amazing. well done you. You might tell from my silence I'd fallen right off the wagon. Bought a load of Christmas cack from lidl and as soon as the family/ grand kids came round....out it came. That's me I'm afraid.

However, yesterday I had my first sugar free day as I'm writing this from my sick bed and could just about eat normal food. So, I will endeavour to build on this.

I'm nearly 64 Norks and I don't think I'm too old for the clothes. I'm waiting for the winter sale to Hoover up some of their cosy dresses for next winter. I've dumped 60 dresses in a charity shop this week so I think I'm allowed. They are £40 plus at the moment so I'll wear what I've got for now and see what ican get next year at hopefully £20 or less.
I have one summer one to send back. When I finally feel well enough to leave the house.

I'll find a link to the two I've kept.

Dowser · 09/12/2015 10:38

And this one in pink. Wanted the green, but I have a very similar m and s one

Hi. I don't know how to proceed. I started this, thinking I would never manage a week. Now i've somehow managed the best part of 7 months (Shock).

My motivation was mostly skin related. I have been on the same acne medication since I was 15 and it worked perfectly, whenever i'd tried to come off it before, the acne came back in about 3 months. Then I changed medication in August. My plan was to quit the added sugar for at least 3 months in the hopes that I wouldn't have a breakout. It is now almost 4 months later and there has been no reappearance of the bad skin. I've also lost a stone!

I don't know if I can go back to eating sugary things, without going overboard again. I don't trust myself! Today I decided to 2 pieces of sugary sweets that I made for christmas gifts. After I did, I just wanted more and more. I'm going to give away the rest of them tomorrow/ASAP!! Maybe I should just have sweet things at restaurants and family meals - like Christmas.

What should I do? What's your long term plan?

Dowser · 14/12/2015 23:56

7 months. Amazing. Very, well done and you are so right.

I'm right off the wagon. I'm eyeing up all the Christmas sweets and treats like I've been banged up in prison for years!.

It's like a drug!

There's no hope for me now. I managed two days last week when I was really ill. I can only try to do damage limitation.

Start afresh each day and just keep it down to a minimum.

msrisotto · 15/12/2015 07:08

This is an especially tough time of year. And when you're really ill, you need to give yourself a break really and do what makes you feel better.

NorksAreMessy · 15/12/2015 23:46

I made a cake last week and it sank in the middle so it was going to be useless. I gave it to DS to eat, but snatched an enormous, sunken, sticky bit first. I could not get it in my face fast enough.
However, that is a very very rare event these days. I think mainly because I KNOW that once I start, I can't stop, I just don't trust myself to have even a tiny bit.

Otherwise, am at Centre Parcs this weeks for a big family party, and have NOT fallen off the wagon at all. Woooohoooo

msrisotto · 16/12/2015 18:54

Well done Norks!

raisin3cookies · 22/12/2015 03:36

Have managed to stay away from sugar now since June, which is my longest run yet.

I have replaced my Christmas treats with copious amounts of cheese, which my mother helpfully shared an article on my facebook wall that says it's addictive as well. Awesome.

No plans to give up dairy.

Dowser · 22/12/2015 10:27

Yes, we'll done Norks and raisin.

I've got sore knees from falling off the wagon every day! Aargh!

Yesterday was particularly bad. Cup of tea in thorntons with two free chocs. Bought chocs to share with GS. Had three, I graciously let him have the fourth. Got another free chic on the way out...let him have the bigger one.

Then when he picked from the celebrations box...I had two as well!

At least my other food is good.

Dowser · 25/12/2015 09:28

Merry Christmas sugar quitters.

Are we Christmas crackers today or Christmas puddings?

I'll have to see what I can squeeze my bulk into!

Lost the plot a bit ;-)

raisin3cookies · 25/12/2015 11:09

Will be staying away from the puds! We have a birthday on Sunday as well, and with my history, even a small indulgence opens up the floodgates. I can't slip back into my old ways!

msrisotto · 25/12/2015 13:08

Merry Christmas! I have officially parked my wagon and will pick it up again in the New year :D
It takes iron will to abstain at this time of year! Best of luck!

NorksAreMessy · 26/12/2015 00:18

Have had a few bits today but I chose deliberately to have them IYSWIM rather than just guzzled for the sake of it
One small spoon of sticky toffee pudding with custard...it was GORGEOUS
One posh Charbonnel and Walker chocolate
a few other chocolates
But that really was it.

The best thing...I haven't been weighing myself, because it is too depressingly high a number, so I don't really know how much the weight is changing. Plus I am VERY OLD so it is slow going
BUT
DD bought me a lovely dress for Christmas, and I looked at the label and got really sad, assuming there was no way it would fit. She said 'just try it on' AND IT FITTED!

I am still a right porker, (especially in the Norks department) but that was just amazing.

I am so grateful to all of you (Dowser especially) for being there to let me ramble on and boast and show off and confess and just UNDERSTAND.
Thank you all Flowers

Dowser · 26/12/2015 11:36

Aww thank you Norks. Well done on the new dress. I scrubbed up well too ;-)

I'm old too so I know what you mean.

I was just going to write Arrrrghhh! Today. That sums it up.

Trifle after lunch. Cheesecake with lemon roulade topping after supper.

Sugar overload much!

Last night I wasn't touching sugar at all today but today im thinking of the home made Christmas cake that was gifted to me.

Hate boxing day tv. All those diets ads . Yeah right! Torture us with all the food ads before Christmas and then slap us riund the heads with the diet ones the very next day!

Cynical? Them? No!!!

raisin3cookies · 26/12/2015 11:59

Beware your digestion, ladies - my stepfather served up a caramilised onion soup for me a few weeks ago and it made me rather uncomfortable the next morning! One way to keep away from sugar is to remind myself of that incident.

Dowser · 26/12/2015 12:32

Arrrgh! Mr Dowser suggesting another cup of tea.

Yes please. ( Still sobbing around in the bedroom)

Then he suggested some Christmas cake with cheese ( him) . Just Christmas cake ( me).

Days got off to a good start then :-(
