I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

Cappster · 10/04/2015 13:51

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

Hello my people. Bit of a hypocrite right now as I'm on holiday and really look forward to a dessert treat be it some gluten free cake, or creme caramel...that's only when dessert is included in the menu.

I echo everyone here who says the only way to stop the craving is to ...stop the sugar.

I'm not beating myself up about it. I haven't bought anything sweet to have in the apartment....in other words, I have stayed away from chocolate.

So I'm proud of that.

We are also eating very healthily. Lots of fresh fish, veg and lots of sunshine so plenty of vitamin d3 and melatonin production.

Well done to those of you who have lost weight.

Don't despair if you have a wobble....just climb back on.

Adios!

msrisotto · 05/11/2015 20:39

Oh have a lovely holiday Dowser! You deserve it :) And don't worry about having dessert!

Good going notenoughhoursleft!

Are you allowed diet coke...it's up to you isn't it. I personally am avoiding sugar and sweeteners, but there are no rules.

So, i'm doing fine. The only thing I have been missing is the odd costa hot chocolate and cake! I've been looking in windows mournfully whilst out and about in the cold blustery rainy weather.

I made it through a week!

I've not been weighing myself so I've no idea if I weigh any less but firstly, I feel so.much.better I can scarcely believe it (in terms of increased energy and decreased heartburn) and secondly it feels like my appetite is much reduced so I probably am eating less.

I've also been loving the non sugar snacks (like cheese and bread) that Sweet Poison argues aren't bad as long as you're restricting your sugar.

I have completely changed what DH and I eat this week and have meal planned properly for the first time in ages, so it's been interesting but easy (with a couple of meal fails we'll never revisit) and certainly feels sustainable - even took the DC out for ice cream this afternoon and didn't mind at all that I wasn't having ice cream.

Well done everyone . I've been to hell on a haycart these last two weeks. Feeling fat and bloated.

After a particularly disastrous day, I've now reigned myself in.

Home tomorrow and back to iron rations.

I want to be 9-12 on jan 1 st, so I need to get my head out of my backside and start afresh.

Can't believe the sugar I've had today.....
Worst day ever!

3point14159265359 · 11/11/2015 01:29

You still on holiday Dowser? It happens. Don't beat yourself up.

Why the target? (And is it even semi reasonable?) I speak with some authority here (I've lost significant weight 3+ times) but I've always found that 'dieting to target' might get you there, but it won't keep you there.

3point14159265359 · 11/11/2015 07:51

Oh. There was supposed to be a smiley at the end of that. I speak with no authority whatsoever. Grin

msrisotto · 11/11/2015 08:20

Never mind Dowser, onwards and upwards! You've already done an amazing job getting to where you are.

FiftyShadesOfSporn · 11/11/2015 08:43

Can I join?

I eat fairly healthily until about 8pm, and then the cravings kick in. Over the last two years I have really improved my diet, cut way back on wine ... but still I let myself down by 'snapping' in the evenings and eating crisps, biscuits, choc, etc.

I figure if I cut down on my remaining sugar during the day, I might get a better handle on the evenings. I'm convinced it will help me to tackle my menopausal hormones too.

So far today, one slice of gluten-free toast with a scraping of soft cheese.

Dowser · 11/11/2015 09:17

We leave today :-(

I'm not complaining. Inever expected to be back so soon after our wedding out here in September.

The target isjust to have something to focus on . I was 10-5 the day before I flew out for the wedding and I just felt that other half stone off my middle would just putme right where I wanted to be.

I won't get weighed till Christmas now. I'm home for a day then I have a meeting in Milton Keynes and staying with some friends for a few days.

So it's going to be the last week in November before I can get back on plan.

Happy to have you aboard 50 shades.

A word of encouragement from my doctor....eat a protein breakfast . It starts you off on the right foot. Gluten free toast isn't good really. It's still a carb and still gets you craving more carb later. It's made from processed rice and potato mainly I believe which aren't good.

I always have a two egg omelette cooked in coconut oil ...every day. She also says if you're hungry eat protein. Some cooked chicken in the fridge. 1 egg omelette with flaked chicken and so on.

You might find you tolerate a little bit of spelt bread occasionally.

hippospot · 12/11/2015 14:14

I was on this thread a few months ago. Here's an update.

I basically never eat cakes, biscuits, pastries, desserts, ice creams etc any more. I have lost my desire for them! I quit sugar in May.

I eat more protein now (pulses, meat, dairy, nuts, eggs). I do eat two small pieces of fruit a day, and two squares of dark chocolate (the very dark stuff). I do eat carbs, but usually wholewheat versions.

I'd say my PMS is on the whole better than before, my skin is very good and the main improvement is the lack of sugar crashes and sugar cravings. I never thought I could retrain my tastebuds in this way! I've always had a major sweet tooth.

My weight hasn't changed at all (but I wasn't overweight so this wasn't a factor). And I still eat three meals and two snacks a day (8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 7pm). I'm ok with this - I've never managed to only eat three times a day, without being uncomfortably full at those three mealtimes.

On odd occasions I've tasted a bit of cake and it has tasted soooo horribly oversweet! I'm not tempted to go back to the way I ate before - this honestly feels like a sustainable way of eating. I have surreptitiously reduced the amount of sugar the rest of the family eats, without them really noticing. But do you agree it's hard to impart healthy eating habits without somehow transmitting an obsession with being slim?

msrisotto · 14/11/2015 11:56

How tall are you Dowser?

I have lost a pound! Am happy because I am back to my personal best (which I got to before a little holiday and birthday distraction!). Smile

Dowser · 14/11/2015 23:05

Im 5'6.

I had two gluten free choc biscuits at a meeting today.

They weren't very nice.

Goodness knows why I had the second one .

Not beating myself up though. It happened move on.

Gutted that you had biscuits and they weren't even to die for! Disappointing.
I think I'm finding that I'm appreciating the sweet stuff that I do eat more. I have it so rarely that when I allow myself something, I make sure it's worth it.

Also I downloaded an app that lets me cross off each sugar free day. It's so silly but I'm like a kid with a star chart - I really want to be able to cross off all the days in the month. I haven't yet managed it because of the odd social thing which I don't mind at all, but it really is a motivator for the rest of the time!

It's called cross calendar, I'm on Android.
So, what are you struggling with? Is there a particular thing or time of day? Maybe we can help.

Dowser · 19/11/2015 11:25

I bought a new dress yesterday. Haven't tried it on yet so don't know if it will fit but I damn well will make it fit!

Home. Saturday. Back on plan Sunday.

9st-12 for jan 1 st. That's the goal.

Dowser · 19/11/2015 15:36

And it fits and it's a lovely piece of loveliness.

Wearing it now...in a cafe Salisbury

DH...would you like a piece of gluten free cake with your tea....my little buttercup?

Me...glowing with smug satisfaction....no thank you my lovely piece of gorgeousness.

Well something along those lines anyway. ....;-)

Oh, the denial to get where you want to be!

msrisotto · 19/11/2015 18:52

Grin Nice one Dowser! I was chuffed the other day that I was a size smaller in Ted Baker than i've ever been before :) I felt like a skinny minnie!

Dowser · 20/11/2015 10:29

Wow! Mrs risotto. That's excellent news. It does give you a boost doesn't it?

If you saw my wardrobe you'd think there were 7 women living in the house..from an 8-20 . Yes my wedding dress ( in september) was a 20 . Taken in on the shoulders and under arms...not on the waist! Yesterday I wore a 14 and tried on a 12 when I got home which fit to perfection!

When I took my dress off for bed last night I said to my husband that this was one of the comfortable dresses I have ever worn.

Here's a pic
www.google.co.uk/search?q=izabel+black+flowery+zip+up+front+dress&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari#imgrc=KpMrm5eOVeTCYM%3A

IN the flesh it looks even nicer. It's a very heavy cotton with a bit of stretch in it.

I love those colours on a black/ dark background. I can wear it with black heeled boots and a black jacket. Even though it's sleeveless it's been mild enough down here to get away with a light jacket.

msrisotto · 21/11/2015 08:47

Wow Dowser, I can't believe you've dropped that many dress sizes! I know how much effort you've been putting into this though, amazing!

So. I got the biggest compliment yesterday - a woman I know with possibly the best figure i've ever seen said: "You've lost so much weight. Is it just this giving up sugar? So... if I gave up sugar, I could look like you?!!!" I was shocked. I have lost about a stone, and on my frame it makes quite a difference. Although, dress size wise, i've only changed from a solid 12 to a 10/12, but I am tall. I weighed myself this morning and I am 1lb off my target weight! Nice feeling before Christmas. Makes me want to go out and buy loads of clothes. But I can't because my old clothes all fit me again now. Happy days :)
