Shiny new thread.
Well done emotional
Was weigh in day today and I can't bloody believe it.....I've put on one lb. I've been sooooooooooo good as well. Could be that I'm due on, but very disheartening, and I've got my brother and sil coming to stay tonight so am cooking a big roast chicken with all the trimmings

I know I'm well known for my wavering but am getting fed up (not literally unfortunately) with Atkins. Debating whether to go with the GL diet instead (again)
Doh, what to do, what to do.........

OP posts:
joelallie · 30/10/2006 13:01

Aggghhh!! Don't do it froggie! You know it won't work. If it's nearly TOM that would explain the 1lb on. It's the long term you're looking to isn't it? Not that I can talk as I sit here tucking into cheese and red onion sarnies... . But I'm officially off the wagon right now......rot started with home-made bread and continued via home-made pizza to chocolate biscuits... But I will be joining you again next week. But first I've got a home-made chocolate halloween cake to negotiate tomorrow

My problem is a a bigger one of the whole diet/non-diet dilemma. What am I trying to acheive? More loss or just maintenance? When do I stop dieting and start living - do you ever do that? Would I ever ever get as skinny as I secretly want to be? I love being thin(ner) but sometimes I look at myself and wonder if all this angst is worth it or if perhaps I'm using it to give myself something to aim for. When I see a fat person in the mirror, do other people see a normal person? Am I the only person that notices when my jeans get tighter or when my skirts are looser? What is the meaning of life??? Sorry for the incoherent ramble...

Anyway.....onwards and upwards everyone!

joelallie · 30/10/2006 13:04

BTW - Monday is a carp day for a weigh in. I usually eat more over the weekend (and drink more TBH!) and it will affect the scales. Could you try Friday instead? The trend will remain the same but the individual numbers will be less depressing.

Crotchety · 30/10/2006 13:18

Well Frog you could eat all the trimmings except the spuds surely? Are clothes feeling any less tight? I still haven't shifted weight-wise but have had a few comments that I've lost weight so am trying not to get hung up on the numbers on the scales.
Joelallie I think it sounds like it should be maintenance for you as you are so nearly at target anyway? I really wouldn't take it to the point where it gets a constant struggle to maintain. I was reading something on the internet the other day about people who come back to a low carb diet having done it once already - this article reckoned the first time is your "golden shot" and it works great. After that it's as if your body knows what you're up to and it's harder work. That would seem to be my experience - have you found this?

Frogdelalune · 30/10/2006 13:21

Well hello there Joelallie I've missed you.
I'm jealous of the cheese and onion buttie

I know, I know. It probably is TOM. It's the thought of roast potatoes, parsnips,stuffing.....etc etc. Maybe I won't do roasties and just do parsnip and potato mash instead... I can resist that more easily.

Even after all this time it still feels wrong to be eating cream, butter, loads of cheese and salad oil etc when I'm trying to lose weight. I really begin to crave fruit (grapefruits especially). It does turn a lifetime of dieting on it's head doesn't it ?

As to whether you should maintain or lose more go with how you feel. What are your reasons for wanting to lose more ? If it's because of what other people think or might think then sod 'em.

I want to lose weight because I feel uncomfortable in my clothes, especially when I'm warm/ I find it difficult to get clothes to fit/ and I'm aware of the added health implications when you carry the weight round your middle (the fat here acts as a kind of extra organ and secretes hormones, and it's not good for your organs to be surrounded by all that fat)

Joelallie, have you tried the GL method ? As long as you balance any occasional high gl foods with low gl foods in the same meal then it makes the meal medium gl. Works on similar lines to the Low Carb but concentrates on the "good" carbs like pulses, wholewheat pasta, brown/wild rice, and lots of fruit and veg with a portion of protein in the same meal.

Gah, who's rambling now............

OP posts:
joelallie · 30/10/2006 13:33

I've tried the low-GI route and had a dabble with low-GL but it just seems so complicated. Low-carb is so easy really - there are things you don't eat and things you do eat! Plus I've never managed to balance things properly to control my cravings. I simply love sweet/starchy things and once I have a taste I can't stop. Never used to be like this although I've always had a sweet tooth - the worst of it started when my first child was born. I just know that when I'm on lc I am in control not the food. Simple as that. And I would really struggle with the idea of cutting right back on cheese and butter. I find it hard to eat low-fat without feeling hungry.

I'm toying with the idea of simply upping the starchy carbs (not sugar) and reducing the fat (a little), and going back to induction when I feel the need.

My problem is with my image of myself. I don't know if I'm fat or thin. Sounds weird but you get into a mindset and it's hard to train yourself out of it. Once you've ditched the scales it's hard to get an objective view I suppose.

joelallie · 30/10/2006 13:38

It's also quite funny to talk about the low-GI diet. That was basically the way I used to eat anyway for years. But it was also the way that allowed me to develop cravings and bad habits and out on 2 stone over the years. Used to eat lentils, brown rice, pasta and veg till they were coming out of my ears!! But I could eat mountains of food and still feel hungry. Now I eat one pork chop, a handful of salad, some mayo and I'm stuffed. I think the only reason I managed to not put on loads of weight earlier than I did was because I smoked pre-kids - who needs a pud when you can have a fag??

Emotional slides into the room wearing shades to cover blood shot eyes etc..............

Joeallie my chum - I've just read the GL diet by Nigel Denby and think its easier than Atkins and the low GI diet. And I for one am going to give it a go!

Its still a no go for bread (unless you get Burgen or pumpernickle), and rice. Pasta should be very occasional and as for potatoes, its occasional sweet potatoes or a very small portion of new potatoes. But what's appealing to me is its gives more variety for fruit and veg, and my own particular fave - porridge!

Anyway I've got nothing to lose so here goes!!! (Apart from six stone)

Joelallie, Strawb - we're losing them to those newfangled G-type diets. What'll we do? Although I do rather like porridge myself...

Struggled this morning making packed lunches for my kids! I was cooking those half-baked baguettes to make sandwiches and the smell was heavenly. Confess to breaking a tiny bit of the bread off the corner of one and scoffing it. Other sins are half a dozen skinny chips at dd's birthday yesterday. Started low-carb on Thursday but did weigh in today and have lost one and half kg which I think is 3lbs?

oxocube · 31/10/2006 08:12

Oh and just realised I did eat 2 satsumas which were definitely NOT on the list of induction foods

emotionalwreck · 31/10/2006 08:37

Well done oxo.

Strawb - don't fret! If its still ok with everyone I'd like to stay on this thread. Low carb or low GL, they do follow the same basic principles i.e. refined carbohydrate is BBBBBAAAAAAAAADDDDDDD! And not all fruit and veg are good for keeping those blood sugars at a constant level!

I think what Crotchety has said about one golden shot is true for me. Low carb worked so well and so quickly last time I did it that I'm really disillusioned with it. And I know I've cheated (lots) but I cheated just as much last time but still lost 3 stone in 6 months!

Anyway, I'm begging you - please don't excommunicate me! !

brimfull · 31/10/2006 08:45

morning folks,so everyone is defecting!!

come to my diet>
the clarke plan is easy.
I gained 4 3/4 lbs on holiday ,got back saturday ,started diet sunday and have lost 4 lbs already !!!!
I've just had toast (linseed bread) and roule cheese for breakfast which is my saviour as can't be bothered to have a cooked meal every morning.

Frogdelalune · 31/10/2006 09:36

Morning all

I managed to resist the potatoes my only compromise was a smidgeon of gravy on my veg

Emotional, Burgen bread is yummy, you can get it in most supermarkets, and don't even think about leaving the thread. We are all still carboholics, no matter what plan we are following.

Joelallie, you can't possibly be fat with a waist measurement of whatever it was and your height ( I remember at the time thinking that it wasn't much bigger than my dd's waist and she's only 6 and a real skinny minnie )

Ggirl, which Clarke one are you following ? He and his wife have written a few, adding more stuff you can eat with each book. I've got a copy of The New High Protein Diet.

Think I'm gonna stick with Atkins induction for a bit longer until I've used up all my vitamin supplements and ketostix, then may try one of the others.

Got to go

Hello all!

I promise never ever to desert low-carb permanently (now is just a blip honest!!). I've tried GL and low GI and for me it simply doesn't work. I get hungry and I crave sugar. And I can't cope with low-fat.

I'm back on board next week and I will stay with it.

froggy - thanks . Waist is 29" so not too bad but the rest of me isn't in proportion.

oxocube · 31/10/2006 10:48

Is mozzarella okay to eat during induction?

skallywag · 31/10/2006 11:00

Hi, can I join in? been doing Atkins and nearly at target weight. Should I carry on with induction? Or move to OWL or whatever it's called. Feel confortable at my level of eating (mean finding it ok & easy), scraed to introduce more stuff, but also concerned for long term health. Is it ok to be eaTing like this long term?

joelallie · 31/10/2006 11:20

Hi skallyway. Well done ! Wish I was at my target - problem is my target keeps moving around . Atkins wrote that you should move onto OWL so that you get used to eating a higher level of carbs before you reach target. Don't be afraid of moving on - you probably will lose much more slowly but if you're nearly there it's not a problem. Increase the veg first - try adding stuff like squash, courgetttes and maybe some nuts and berries. But do it gradually - not that I've ever managed that . Don't worry about the long term effects - as long as you are eating plenty of veg as well as the meat etc you'll be fine. I know of many people that are following an lc WOE long-term - for life really - and that is what I was doing until I went a bit mad recently.
