Coconut water and Bulletproof coffee.

Not exactly weight loss-related, more health-fad related...

I tried both these things recently, was so excited - they both sound delicious on paper, and are supposedly Really Good For You.

And, wtf? They're both SO. GROSS.

Coconut water tastes like watered-down sweat (to be polite, also reminds me of another bodily fluid). Made me gag, I couldn't swallow more than two gulps. Reminded me of these horrible Oralyte drinks I had to gulp down after a bad flu made me dangerously dehydrated. I wonder if there's something about the hydrating combination of sodium and potassium that just inherently tastes horrible?

Bulletproof coffee tastes less immediately gross, and does indeed look like a frothy latte. But after about 3 sips, it started tasting like I'd melted a huge knob of butter into my coffee. Oh wait, that's pretty much what I did. I had to pour the rest of my lovingly-made cup down the sink.

So, pretty disappointing I'd say... anyone else tried these and actually liked them?

I love bullet proof coffee Grin I find that it is best to drink it all when it's still hot rather than leaving it (like I usually do) as it tastes fattier when it's warm.

I've had tea with coconut milk ( not the stuff in the tins, it's in a carton like soya milk) and it was fine. Didn't taste of anything much really. Was also ok on cereal.

What did you use?

AggressiveBunting · 08/07/2014 07:52

Coconut water and coconut milk are totally different things scarlett. The water comes from the centre of the coconut (typically a young cocunut). It's clear with a greenish tinge and is basically isotonic. I personally love the stuff but i know what you mean that it tastes not dissimilar to things like Pocari Sweat. Coconut milk is the liquid from crushing the flesh of the coconut.

Don't see the point of bulletproof coffee. Why not just use milk/cream?

Chachah · 08/07/2014 09:50

Jimmy I wanted to love bulletproof coffee! Maybe I did leave it standing for too long before drinking... probably should give it another go.

AggressiveBunting, aside from the supposed health benefits (from the quality of the coffee and the types of oil/fat used, I guess), it tastes different from coffee with milk or cream - less heavy, smoother, and it's also frothy like a latte. I can actually see the appeal, my problem was that I could really, really taste the butter.

Also thought I was going to love coconut water. I think coconut/coconut milk/coconut cream are all delicious, so I wasn't psychologically prepared for the foulness of it...

Yes- I hadn't really thought about the fact that coconut water doesn't actually taste of coconut. It also isn't as nice out if the carton as fresh but I imagine it's quite hard to get fresh in the uk. ( I'm in Asia where it's everywhere).

Chachah · 08/07/2014 12:01

Good point about fresh coconut - I may go have a look in Asian grocery stores. Not giving up just yet!

update: it turns out the Asian grocery store next door sells fresh coconuts!

one Youtube tutorial later, I have an open coconut and a glass of fresh water.

it tastes slightly better, I have to admit. But really still not great. The initial taste is ok, quite sweet, but then the funky aftertaste hits, and quickly becomes overpowering.

this one will end up in a smoothie, I think!

Agree coconut water is yuk!
What is this bullet proof coffee? Coffee with butter?

Chachah · 09/07/2014 08:52

yep, basically it's coffee blended with butter and coconut oil.

I haven't tried BPC with butter yet but with coconut oil it's actually really nice. Did you use unsalted butter btw?

Chachah · 09/07/2014 09:32

Penelope I'm starting to think I must have done it wrong, because everyone seems to like it. I love coffee and I love fat, so it's the only explanation...

I did use unsalted butter. Did you try it with coconut oil only? Maybe I should try that.

OP posts:
JimmyCorkhill · 09/07/2014 12:38

How much butter did you use? For a regular mug of BPC I use a tsp of butter and a tsp of oil. I also blend it with a stick blender.

Chachah · 09/07/2014 19:52

I put 2tbsp oil and 2tbsp butter, for about 400mL (2 mugs, I guess).

OP posts:
JimmyCorkhill · 09/07/2014 20:02

That's a lot more than I use. Not that there's anything wrong with the amounts but if you're not enjoying the taste why not lower the amounts to 2 teaspoons of butter and 2 teaspoons of oil to 400ml coffee and see if that tastes better to you?

Chachah · 09/07/2014 20:13

Yes will definitely try that! since it's the butter taste that bothers me, I may try to cut the amount in half, see if it makes a difference.
Thanks!

Well....? Did you like it?! Grin

PenelopeGarciasCrazyHair · 10/07/2014 22:53

I only have salted butter in, so I just use the coconut oil. Try that, it doesn't even taste coconutty, just like creamy coffee.

Chachah · 11/07/2014 13:38

Jimmy I've been away from home! Delicious Bulletproof coffee will be mine this weekend, though... (maybe!)

Penelope's version is next on the list Grin

Hurrah! Here's to many more BPCs in the future Brew!!!

WhatsGoingOnEh · 03/08/2014 23:00

Coming very late to this thread!! But bulletproofers - did you buy the actual Bulletproof TM coffee beans? Or just chuck some Kerrygold into your Nescafé? I'm wondering how easy/affordable it us to buy the real BP beans in the uk. Thanks!

JimmyCorkhill · 03/08/2014 23:42

I use Aldi instant coffee and Aldi unsalted butter! But I am going to ask for some of this for my birthday. It will probably blow my head off!
