8 glasses of water a day

I was just wondering about this 8 glasses of water a day. I am going to try and start drinking at least 1 litre of water a day. I know that's not 8 glasses but I don't drink any at the moment.

Can anyone tell me if I can drink a litre of apple & blackcurrent juice (no added sugar) instead of water. Obviously most of it is water and it might sound like a stupid question. I just wanted to make sure I was doing it right. Not a great lover of water.

I don't know if it makes much difference having diluting juice instead of plain water but I would imagine plain water would be better for you. I didn't like water much a few years back and forced myself to drink more of it and I really quite like it now (although I very often don't drink enough of it either).

Thanks Demented, I was begining to feel I was out here all on my own.

I think your liver still has to work harder with squash and it doesn't have the same benefits as water. I've managed to build the 6 to 8 glasses in to my daily habits and it doesn't seem too much of a big deal any more although it felt like BUCKETS when I started. At work I take in a big plastic bottle and swig out of that at regular intervals - it soon goes down. We also bought a water filter and keep it in the fridge so the water tastes nicer. Must say I do feel better for it and someone at work said my skin was looking nice last week (Get me, supermodel!)

Thanks both. Right I'd better start on the water then.

Oh, second Moomin's suggestion of a water filter. We have an American style fridge-freezer that dispenses chilled filtered water and DH and I gave up buying Diet Coke and DS1 has stopped drinking so much apple juice and drinks more water now. Only thing is the filter needs replaced at the moment and I can see us all slipping back into old habits, buying juice again etc, because the water just doesn't taste as nice. The jug style water filters are quite cheap and this is what I bought when I first started to drink more water, tasted much better than it does out the tap.

Have u tried diluting half fresh juice with water and then adding more water each time? It may slowly get u used to water and has more goodness than squash.

Does fizzy water count? We have sparkling mineral water in cans at work and i prefer drinking that to plain water.

wintye · 30/03/2004 19:09

Demented - we actually ave afilter built in with our sink, to filter the tap water and it does taste better.

I don't mind water, just find it nicer to drink the juice. I'll give it a go but only drink a litre for the mo.

Kayleigh - not sure about the fizzy water, anyone else.

Hi all - just checked my "week 1 Getting started" book, and here's what it has to say about water:

"Plain, sparkling, club soda or unsweetened seltzers all count .....toward the six glasses per day. Three of the six glasses can be juice, milk, decaffeinated beverages or beverages that don't contain alcohol."

So.....there you have it!
