I thought I was pretty clued up on healthy eating and on why certain foods were good or bad. Then I read 'In Defence of Food' by Michael Pollan. It is astonishing to read about how utterly clueless, completely untrue, or often deliberately misleading, official nutritional advice is. And incredible how simple it is to eat healthily. Anyone who has ever dieted/low carbed/low anythinged should read this book.

Sort of on topic, with regards to how we are programmed to like certain foods....I made some sweet potaoto cookies for my dc this eve, they were fighting over them and agreed they wanted one in their lunchbox after they had had eaten one 'yes please ... delicious' etc. When I told them what was and wasn't in them however their faces literally fell and there were comments like 'urgh....thought they tasted a bit weird'. Dp (who knew what was in them) told me they were quite vile ... but still had two ;

I was listening to a podcast today (a paleo one not that it is relevant to the thought) and there was a statement on tot that really made me stop and think. The guest speaker said that instead of talking about foods as being "healthy" we should talk about them being "nutritious". People are healthy - food is not. If we think about whether what we eat will nourish our bodies and make them healthy rather than whether the food itself is healthy (which of odourless makes no sense), we will naturally eat the foods discussed on here....unprocessed foods.

I think of my food as medicine. Everything you eat is creating the body you have. So the food needs to be fresh and vitamin rich.

Yumyumpoppycat, that is funny about your cookies! It is interesting how many other factors can get in the way of judging food by how it actually tastes - appearance of the food, the mood we are in, what we know about what's in it etc. Kids are so easily put off by 'odd' looks ingredients. My dc are quite fussy but getting better.
