New thread ...

schneebly! That's where I got it from!

Littlefish that sounds delicious - I love quiches, and sausage rolls. Not that keen on pork pies (it's the jelly) although I adore the pastry they're made from. You must be exercising superhuman self control not to have a sneaky taste here and there - good for you.

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 14:23

I'm not too bad about the eating in public thing normally. Do feel wary of eating any large sweet things, such as ice creams, while just wandering around the streets, as I feel that people will probably be judging me for it. But do still do it occasionally. It's when I'm on my own that I often get carried away (or used to, not so often now). Buying food and bringing it home to eat in private.

WigWamBam · 04/08/2006 14:42

I'm a bit like that, Jackie. I feel very self-conscious if I eat anything when I'm out - I was on a train once, eating an apple, when some sour old boot with a mouth like a cat's bum asked me if I really needed that, and I always feel that someone is judging me for it. It's when I'm on my own that I get most carried away - I bring food in and sit and binge on it.

In other people's houses I'm just self-conscious - what will they think of me if I eat this, will they think I'm a pig if I have two biscuits instead of one, should I refuse that delicious looking doughnut because I'll look like a gannet if I eat it.

I know what you mean SJ. I worry that if we go out to dinner, people will watch what I eat and make a judgement. It's ridiculous, because we only go out with people who are really good friends and they love me!

Jackieno - my pork pies are delicious and have no jelly in them. They are just really good sausage meat, combined with chopped chicken, lots of herbs etc. in a delicious cold water pastry crust.

I sometimes make sausage rolls as well. They're so much nicer than bought ones and as I've made them myself, I'm happy for dd to eat them because I know what's in them. You just buy ordinary sausages (I buy organic or local butcher ones because the fat content tends to be lower.

Split the sausage skin open and take out the sausage meat.
Roll out a rectangle of flaky pastry (usually bought as life's just too short to make flaky pastry)!
Put the sausage meat down the middle
Wrap the pastry round and seal by painting a "seam" of beaten egg.
Cook

Delicious! (but only for very special occasions)

I try and buy only really good ingredients and spend time really thinking about what I want to cook. That way, I tend to eat less because I'm not snacking on easy-to-eat pre-prepared foods which can be quite addictive because of the high salt and fat content. It works for me becuase I only have raw ingredients in my house, rather than ready-to-eat stuff so if I want to eat something, it takes a real effort to cook it.

Obviously, my portion sizes are still ridiculous, but my diet is well balanced

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 14:49

That all sounds fab Littlefish - OK - I'll eat your pork pie (sorry, that sounds rude). Oh dear. And the sausage rolls sound delicious too . Just Jus-Rol frozen ones in this house.

alittlebitshy · 04/08/2006 15:07

hey sj!!!
am here. so, about tomorrow????

hi everyone - i have some good news.. I passed my driving test this morning. 5th time lucky lol. twice when i was 17, and 3 times in past 3 months. not sure how I am ever going to get courage to drive alone let alone with my precious dd, but we'll see lol.

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 15:09

Wow - BIG CONGRATULATIONS alittlebitshy! Maybe get some practice on your own, before going out with DD? Do you have a car you can use, or will you have to share with your OH? That's fab news.

WigWamBam · 04/08/2006 15:11

Oh, brilliant! Don't waste it now - get yourself into the car and DRIVE! Such freedom!

OP posts:
alittlebitshy · 04/08/2006 15:20

we just have the one car - it's hoooge (well an oldish estate) so it'll take some practice.
going to have the pass plus lessons bsm offer to a) get the hang of motorway driving, b) help lower the insuarance.

as soon as dh gets me on the insurance i'm going to get him or someone to come out for a little drive. god help them .

when the examiner told me i'd passed i said" you're kididng" , then had a mini tearful moment. I knew i hadn't done anything major to fail but i knew there were a few minors (14, 1 or 2 more and i've have failed)....... so wasn't sure which way it would go.

WigWamBam · 04/08/2006 15:23

Make it sooner rather than later - otherwise you'll get the collywobbles! Get out in the car as soon as you can.

alittlebitshy, well done! Congratulations! I hope to be saying that in the next few months.
Can't wait.

The conversation this afternoon about feelings about eating in public I really relate to. I can do several weks dieting and stick to it and then the prospect of eating out gets me in such a state I completely go off the rails. If I hadn't got wound up and polished off everything in sight and just ate the meal out it wouldn't have made a dent in the diet. There is no logic in my attitude to food.

Littlefish · 04/08/2006 15:39

Congratulations Alittlebit shy. Fantastic news.

Littlefish · 04/08/2006 15:40

What are the plans for meeting on 18th August in Oxford? I'm trying to see if I can re-arrange a couple of other things, but would like to know timings etc.

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 16:01

Don't think we've got as far as timings, littlefish, though I think we're planning on a lunchtime picnic, weather permitting. When would suit you?

suejonez · 04/08/2006 16:33

congrats alittlebitshy - you passed your test because they thought you were a competant driver so guess what - you are as competant a driver as anyone else who passed. Get out there girl and practice.

Tomorrow I can still do 1.30 at Tchibo if thats OK with you email me on suejonez at aol dot com if you want to otherwise just tell me what you look like and no doubt we'll find each other - its not very big! If all tables are taken just mooch around the shop when we meet we can always go somewhere else.

alittlebitshy · 04/08/2006 16:55

just emailed you sue

Littlefish · 04/08/2006 17:01

Right, the other things are definitely moveable. So I'm going to be really brave and come - as long as you promise not to be hairy truckers in disguise

This is going to sound like a really rubbish excuse, but dd still sleeps for 2 hours at lunchtime (21 months old). The latest I have managed to keep her awake until is about 2.30.

If we met at about 11.00/11.30, I could do lunch and then leave so she can sleep in the car on the way home.

How does that suit anyone else?

Where are you thinking of meeting? Is there parking nearby?

suejonez · 04/08/2006 17:05

Will have to consult my partner in crime, MrsJC, but that sounds fine to me.

Alitlebitshy - have replied, see you tomorrow.

suejonez · 04/08/2006 17:07

I think Jackie is our Oxford consultant so will be expecting her to talk about venue and parking etc. No pressure Jackie...

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 17:08

DS still has a nap after lunch too, so that would suit me fine. I'm going to check out Christ Church Meadow as it's pretty central, but I have never actually been there . I'm going to park and ride , as parking in the centre of Oxford is a bit of a pain.

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 17:08

sue.

suejonez · 04/08/2006 17:12

we need a contingency plan of where to met and eat if its pissing down (excuse language), did we agree on bella pasta? How about a coffee place to meet up or inside shopping mall - sorry haven't been to OXford for years.

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 17:28

Yes - Bella Pasta (sorry, now called Bella Italia in Oxford, for some reason), is near to Debenhams, but how about meeting in the Clarendon Centre mall - suggest outside Zara, if it's raining. Maybe we can swap mobile phone numbers too, to ease things?

suejonez · 04/08/2006 17:31

Lets do a rollcall next week of who's coming then we can swap phone numbers/email addresses

So far

JackieNO
Littlefish
Suejonez
MrsJC ?
WWB ?

how about the rest of you?

Roughly 11.30 - 2pm Friday 18th August.

WigWamBam · 04/08/2006 17:54

Can someone hold me back from posting on the "fat women in shorts" thread please? I am so peed off at these fat bashing threads ... they seem to be cropping up every other day recently. According to recent threads we shouldn't wear shorts, swimsuits, bikinis, halter necks, strappy t-shirts, sandals, ot anything that shows our upper arms, knees, cleavage ... I keep wanting to ask them what we're actually allowed to wear but suspect the answer is they don't want to see us at all!

If I post on the thread I will end up saying something that will get me into trouble.
