I'm on day 2 and boy I am grumpy! Poor kids can't do anything right today Sad Will it pass? Can't say I'm hungry at all though which is a bonus. Getting a headache but nothing too bad.

Anyone got any websites that have food lists on them? Is dried fruit a no go?

icepole · 01/04/2014 16:42

I have put weight on and I feel awful today. Really didn't want to start counting calories but looks like the only way I can lose weight is by being hungry and counting everything, so depressing. I won't start eating pasta or bread again but I will have the odd bit of dark chocolate because it is just miserable without it and I am not seeing a result anyway. I have no idea how people cope on 1200 calories a day, I am dreading it.

RainbowDashMustDie · 01/04/2014 17:32

Aww Ice sorry you've not had a loss, how long have you been sugar free?

I'm not going to weigh myself at all and just go off my clothes and how I feel. Day 3 and I feel like death but I'm hoping it improves!

icepole · 01/04/2014 18:23

On week four. I do feel better so I am not going back to the way I ate before - lots of pasta etc but I will have the odd bit of dark chocolate and I am going to eat oatcakes again. I think I may have a bug actually which is why I feel so ill today.

RainbowDashMustDie · 01/04/2014 19:10

Feel better soon Thanks

RedundantExpat · 02/04/2014 12:53

Can I join? Have started going without sugar since first day of lent but am finding it still really hard. And I am eating so much more: nuts, bread, crisps, etc. it's awful.

JimmyCorkhill · 08/04/2014 11:18

Hi, hope everyone is well and staying on the wagon Grin

I have been sugar free (90%) for about 12 weeks now. Had an SOS yesterday but was quite shocked to find it tasted no different to before (slice of cake).

I was expecting my head to blow off from the sweetness and for me to gag and say "OMG that is disgusting, my taste buds are completely over sugar." But no, it tasted just as it did before Confused

On the plus side I didn't feel the need to eat any more crap which is new for me!

Happymum1985 · 12/04/2014 21:15

Hi all, REALLY happy to have found this thread!! During my pregnancy I developed a really sweet tooth. Started having 2 (generous) sugars in my tea and coffee, plenty of Starbucks frapaccinos, jam/ honey/ choc spread, and got hooked on cake/ chocolate/ sweets.. and of course tried to counteract this with low fat yoghurts/ skimmed milk/ light cheese etc.

About a month ago, I decided enough was enough and that I wanted to shift my remaining pregnancy weight (1 stone) so thought I would do this by cutting out all processed sugar and gluten, and replacing fat free dairy with full fat alternatives.

5 weeks on, I am absolutely loving my new diet. My appetite has reduced big time, I snack far less, my skin is better, and I can taste food properly again so no longer feel the need to drown all my meals in sauces! I have lost 10lbs so far, and this hasnt involved feeling hungry or denying myself anything that is sugar and gluten free. Anyone considering it, I really can't sell it enough. There have been times when I have nearly weakened- usually during a night in watching tv- but having full fat greek yoghurt with banana and a handful of gluten free oats usually stops this.

Was only planning to do this for a month, but now I dont want to give it up!!

CountessOfRule · 12/04/2014 21:45

Still going here - a stone lost in five weeks. I feel like I'm eating loads, and I'm tempted only rarely.

I struggle with drinks as I previously drank a lot of squash, but fizzy water (18p for 2L in Morrison's Grin ) is helping. I relax the rules a bit on Sundays, but rarely indulge. Cakes, puddings and sweets just aren't as appealing any more.

I survived DC2's birthday party this week - nearly mindlessly stuck my hand in a bowl of chocolate fingers and party rings, but realised just in time, and with that came the understanding that so much before was mindless eating rather than hunger.

DB has brought round a very treacley ginger cake today though. Hard to resist and it's interesting that I'm now more tempted by the less sweet sweets (liquorice, ginger, dark chocolate) than the pure sugar hit of eg Dairy Milk, Haribo, lemon drizzle cake.

RainbowDashMustDie · 13/04/2014 19:01

A stone in 5 weeks is really impressive! I'm just over 2 weeks in and still enjoying it. I've found that I'm a lot less hungry than usual and my energy levels are slightly up. I'm not going to bother weighing myself as it's more about how I feel.

I've been having some really intense dreams, anyone else found this? Is anyone limiting fruit? I've had 4 portions of fruit today and I'm guessing that's too many.

RuthlessBaggage · 13/04/2014 19:45

I don't restrict fruit except dried - half a portion a day on porridge.

Changing up to full fat milk has helped too.

JimmyCorkhill · 14/04/2014 08:47

I second the full fat. If you're satisfied with fat you won't need the sugar. I haven't eaten any fruit for about 12 weeks now Shock but I have eaten more veg than I ever have before (even when I was a vegetarian!)

I had the intense dreams. I was initially really anxious too but that's worn off thankfully.

RainbowDashMustDie · 14/04/2014 22:28

Yeah I agree the fat is really satisfying. I've even had the odd coffee with cream Grin I think I'm going to try for 2 portions of fruit a day this week and then down to 1 the following.

JimmyCorkhill · 14/04/2014 23:00

I only stopped the fruit as I wanted to rid myself of all sweet tasting things to start with. I don't plan on cutting it out for good but I am very surprised that I don't actually feel like eating it (as I ate tons before I cut out sugar). I have replaced it with veg though (another surprise as I barely ate any when I was a vegetarian!). However, veg can be delicious when it is roasted in oil or smothered in garlic butter, I love fat!

purpleprincess · 17/04/2014 22:20

Just wanted to say hi and that I'm going to join you. Have made a few half hearted attempts to go sugar free but given up quite easily. I have good excuse in that I've been suffering from thrush on and off for quite a while but kept thinking that it is too difficult.....I have made changes to my diet inc full fat Greek yoghurt instead of fruity but need I wean myself off adding honey etc. also healthy peanut butter etc but need to watch other hidden sugar as well as the obvious which I've not done recently....it's glad to see some sense on here as it is so easy to look up stuff on the interweb that scare the bejesus out of you. Also glad to see that you can still drink some wine on here although when I've done that I seem to crave chocolate more Cake.

I've got some of those books on order from library so will see how I get on.

Trouble is it was my birthday on Monday and I was given one of those big slabs of hotel chocolat stuff so I've had to hide it.....

purpleprincess · 20/04/2014 11:51

Bumping this. Perhaps there is another more current thread? Please can someone let me know and post link?

Thanks. Happy easter Easter Smile

JimmyCorkhill · 20/04/2014 19:29

Did everyone survive Easter?!!

Hello purpleprincess. Hope you are doing okay and haven't been sabotaged by the birthday chocolate.

I've been making meals with 'easy garlic' and 'easy ginger', they come in a jar. They've got bloody sugar in them, gah! Why does garlic need sugar? That'll teach me to be lazy.

RuthlessBaggage · 20/04/2014 20:05

Well, today I broke my fast (had given up for Lent) with a couple of things I thought I was missing, and some Easter Feast things.

Conclusions:

  1. Squash doesn't taste of anything but sugar. Yawn. Not bothered.
  1. Chocolate is just fat and sugar and doesn't taste of anything. I felt really very sick after really not very much.
  1. Cheesecake is FIT. And surprisingly sweet compared with my memory.

I'm back to pre-baby weight (pre-DC3 that is) and have converted DH. He joins me tomorrow.

From now on I'm going to be strict during the week and a bit more lax at weekends - not bingeing, but not worrying about labels, eg lazy garlic as pp, or shop-bought mayonnaise, or salt and vinegar crisps.

If I get back to pre-DC2 weight (another 10lb ish) or pre-DC1 (yet another 10lb) I'll look at having more sugar on more occasions, ie not just SOS.

But it's good to have had as much as I wanted today, to learn that my palate has changed and sugar is a rubbish reward. Fruit is quite sweet and tasty enough, especially with some cheese. Yum.

purpleprincess · 20/04/2014 20:27

Thanks jimmy corkhill. I have managed to avoid birthday chocolate so far but have cheesecake today and prosecco (well it is Easter) so could blame that on SOS sugar. DH went and bought some reduced hot cross buns and has Houston had one toasted which I'm trying to resist.....aargh.

purpleprincess · 20/04/2014 20:28

Sorry Houston? Should be 'just' had one toasted. Whoops

purpleprincess · 24/04/2014 19:53

Hi ladies any tips for sweet tasting stuff I can have of an evening. I often crave something sweet after a meal or just want something later in the evening with my Brew and of course off the biscuits now. Sad

Will probably have few strawberries and blueberries later which will be boring lovely (as have had my Greek yoghurt and banana for the day) but need few more dessert type ideas

TIA

JimmyCorkhill · 24/04/2014 20:14

If you avoid any sweet tasting foods you actually lose the cravings for it. You could have nuts instead, they seem quite decadent and you don't eat them quickly. Or maybe pour some double cream over the berries to make them more satisfying.

CountessOfRule · 24/04/2014 20:17

If I get nibbly in the evening I have apple and cheese - the salty cheese makes the apple taste even sweeter.

But yes, as your palate changes you won't care.

purpleprincess · 24/04/2014 20:34

Ok maybe I didn't mean sweet so much as just something else.... I usually eat lots of almonds during the day esp at work so probably need to branch out a bit. Cheese is good idea but prob not Apple later in the evening.

Not big nut fan unless covered with salt/honey roasted! Perhaps will try pecans as quite like them.

Thanks

JimmyCorkhill · 24/04/2014 23:16

I have salted pistachios as a treat. Plus taking the shells off makes the treat last longer.
