And that's the only rule, really.

Come one, come all and join us!

I am on a fast/no sugar day today and I am going to do this. I shall report back later !

Shimmyshimmy · 12/03/2014 20:29

How'd it go Dosey? I'm not doing a great job at avoiding sugar in savoury food, I'm not sure I even want to go that far though, a dribble of BBQ sauce in my burger, a tsp of sugar in my brioche bun, shouldn't hurt too much.
So it's been over a week now, I've been tempted by the lovely biscuits the kids made but only when everyone else is eating them. I haven't craved sugar at all. Drinking loads of water and cups of tea!

Dosey · 13/03/2014 06:28

Hi shimmy I am doing naff. I don't know why I am finding it so hard. I did really well before. Well today is another day and I will try again. I don't want to give up things like sauces just biscuits, sweets at first and take it from there. Sounds like you are doing just fine.

Shimmyshimmy · 13/03/2014 07:07

Dosey I sugar free it quite a lot, problem for me is I can't get to grips with eating sugar moderately and I don't want to give up sugar forever, I'm planning the most luxurious box of chocs for Easter I can find and then I'll jump back on the wagon the following Tuesday. I used to just give up chocolate and that helped a bit and allowed me some treats. The first few days are the hard bit after that it's relatively easy.
Have you tried giving up before?

CorrieDale · 13/03/2014 07:53

Still having substitution issues! Maybe I should have given up snacking for Lent!

Shimmyshimmy · 13/03/2014 14:10

Snacking is much harder to give up!

JokersGiggle · 17/03/2014 09:50

Has anyone else found that after Weeks without sugar eating chocolate makes you shake? I had a crunchy bar (just 1) and about 20mins later I started to shake! Lasted about half an hour followed by feeling ill, headache and being really grumpy.
Is that normal? I've been without sugar since September and that was my first bit of proper sugar that I've had.

CorrieDale · 18/03/2014 18:27

Aargh! 2 weeks in and the cravings have hit! It's been a fairly stressful couple of days and I could really sink some sweets. Settling for homemade soda bread with raisins.

CountessOfRule · 18/03/2014 18:41

Half a stone off in two weeks. That's helped with the motivation today!

Swapping sugar with fat goes against everything I ever "knew" about weight control.

JimmyCorkhill · 18/03/2014 20:06

CountessOfRule I know how you feel. It goes against EVERYTHING we were ever told. Congratulations on your weight loss Smile

I've swapped sugar for fat for 8 weeks now and I'm still losing weight but no longer feel any cravings for the sweet stuff. I'm gobsmacked as I have always, always been 'hungry'.

I'm not following any particular diet, I've just cut out all sugar and wheat. I'm actually eating loads of veg which is unheard of for me plus cooking meals from scratch. I'm still drinking lots of red wine.

It sounds wrong and also a chore but for the first time in my life I don't feel controlled by food.

Escape the Diet Trap by John Briffa explains the science behind it all. I won't go back to eating sugar and wheat. I don't miss it at all.

amouseinawindmill · 18/03/2014 21:09

Hi, can I join in? I read the Sugar Poison diet book at the weekend and am now on Day 3 of no added sugar (so fruit is still on, except dried, but the rest has been banned).
Doing fine so far in beating cravings but today I feel tired, wooly-headed and generally under the weather. I have also had 2 nighta of crazy dreams: not too unusual for me as I am prone to sleepwalking etc but these have been really vivid.

A question about yoghurt if you don't mind. One of my old favourire breakfasts was yoghurt on Jordans museli. What can I have in place of the museli which will bulk out the yoghurt but is not fruit?

CountessOfRule · 18/03/2014 21:35

Roast some nuts and oats? DIY muesli but without the sugar. Nuts would up the fat content too, for satiety.

JimmyCorkhill · 19/03/2014 15:48

They talk about flaxseed on yogurt in the low carb bootcamp threads I don't even know what it is!

amouseinawindmill · 19/03/2014 22:03

thanks; I used plain oats, fresh berriesand naturak yoghurt today. It was ok, I will grow to like it!

Nearly gave in at the petrol station today, queuing next to the chocolate. But managed to stop myself! I am eating nuts and cheese like anything though so I don't expect to be losing much weight at the moment! Blush

amouseinawindmill · 19/03/2014 22:05

PS: Jimmy you are not alone in not knowing what flaxseed is. Suspect I don't spend enough time in a shop more exotic than Morrisons....

CountessOfRule · 19/03/2014 22:24

mouse I'm eating tons of cheese and lost half a stone in a fortnight.

I'm starting the day with a decent helping of porridge.

Shimmyshimmy · 19/03/2014 22:34

Nearly caved today, while I helped dd make chocolate filling for Bourbon biscuits we made yesterday. Was really glad I didn't even try a tiny bit.

chinhealer · 20/03/2014 01:37

Just finished my first 24-hour period without sugar. (Although I did have one medium pear, one small kiwi fruit and two strawberries - by my reckoning, that amounts to no more than 13g of fructose.)

I understand that it is best to try and limit daily fructose intake (even in the form of fruit) to 25g.

I bought The Sweet Poison Quit Plan yesterday and have nearly finished reading it today. Most of it sounds sensible and it has definitely convinced me that sugar is my enemy.

My food intake overall today was very modest indeed. Especially as it was an active day of work with a heavy (weights) gym session tacked on to the end!

Just wondering if there are any other vegetarians on here who have tried giving up sugar and their experiences in the medium-long term?

Shimmyshimmy · 20/03/2014 06:25

We'll done chin first week is the hardest for cravings. I still struggle with family gatherings and all the general feasting that goes on, I cook a lot, dcs have more of a grip of their sugar intake than I have and shamefully they know it. I used to be veggie but gave up after 25 years Blush

chinhealer · 20/03/2014 12:40

Thanks Shimmyshimmy (can I call you Shimmy?!) At the moment, I'm feeling no kind of craving at all. (Which is surprising considering the industrial quantities of, for instance, Maltesers (and any and all other chocolates) and jam and honey and milkshakes etc I've put away in the past!) In fact, I'm feeling a quiet rage against sugar and the ridiculous hold it has had over me for all my life!

I bought a ready-made potato salad, pesto-pasta salad and mini cheese and onion pasties from the Coop today for my family. I later checked the labels - there was sugar in each one! I'm so disgusted by that! (I don't put sugar in any of those when I've home-made them in the past.)

The labels of flavoured/coated peanuts (which I've also eaten plenty of recently) reveal sugar, some of the Quorn products in our freezer contain sugar, so many condiments contain sugar... I've had it with the lot of them! If I see sugar (or any of its pseudonyms, or any sweeteners) mentioned on a label, I'm steering well clear.

Rather than seeing this as restriction, I'm seeing these attempts at force-feeding me sugar as a personal attack/invasion! And I refuse to be poisoned in this way!

I'm already feeling much, much better. I'm eating (almost exclusively) unprocessed, homemade food and am totally satisfied with it.

Yes, I think this anger/moral outrage against the sugar-peddlers will sustain me well!

chinhealer · 20/03/2014 12:46

@Shimmy - I see you are watching Salamander. How does it compare to other European series? We've got it recorded, but weren't sure whether or not to delete it since our newfound adoration of Modern Family is taking up a huge amount of space in our planner!

CountessOfRule · 20/03/2014 12:58

yy to channeling one's outrage.

And I'm guessing the sugar in potato salad was in the mayonnaise. I was absolutely appalled to find it there.

What I'm missing most now that I've got over missing squash ... are salt & vinegar crisps. Oh lovely crisps Sad

chinhealer · 20/03/2014 14:46

@CountessOfRule - heehee... I also bought Walkers Salt and Vinegar crisps this morning... again, not for me. But if they've got sugar in 'em, I'll:

a. Fume and never eat them again

and

b. Fume and never forgive Gary Linekar again.

Shimmyshimmy · 20/03/2014 16:00

Salamander had me hooked from the second episode - there was too much metal cutting in the first, so I stubbornly MN'd the whole way through it. Ending was annoying but the journey was a good one, recommended! Modern family is fantastic - so funny, not surprised you're addicted.

chinhealer · 21/03/2014 09:32

Ending was annoying but the journey was a good one

That sounds a lot like the latest Line of Duty series, which was the best and most compelling TV we'd seen in ages... until the final episode went and imploded and got tangled up in annoying partial-resolutions and improbabilities!
