Hello
Can I come and join you in the feeling crap bit!! I hate going out and shopping and weigh a lot more than you Hmm and I have also got polycistic ovaries!!!
I know what you mean about starting a diet on monday and being off track by wed! I think I need to start meal planning maybe on a Saturday for the rest of the week! But dh doesn't really like English food as he is from Sri Lanka and ds needs to put on weight so I can never be bothered to cook 3 meals :(
Maybe we can have a pcos weight loss support thread and just try and change little things to get us on our way Grin

Talkinpeace · 11/11/2013 15:02

zazza
try calorie counting to your TDEE .... which is around 1900
if you can stay within that every day the weight will start to come off

fasting is good for pcos btw

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 15:50

So stop dieting Shock Shock Smile

Talkinpeace · 11/11/2013 16:44

milly
Not really.
Most people on the 5:2 threads have discovered that they were eating FAR more than they realised.
Learning to live just below your TDEE is a really good place to start
those of us who mix that up with a couple of 500 calorie days in a week tend to lose weight.

zazzabeans · 11/11/2013 17:30

TDEE?? Confused

goldensunnydays defo think a pcos diet thread Grin theres bound to me more than us .

milly stop dieting?? Hmm where did that come from ??

Talkinpeace · 11/11/2013 17:32

zazza
its your personalised "Total daily energy expenditure"
you put in your height, weight, age and activity level and it calculates it just for you.
I guessed you were around 30

there are quite a few PCOS people doing 5:2 ....

AutumnNights · 11/11/2013 17:36

I have pcos and have been struggling to find the motivation to stick to a diet. Recently it has clicked and i am now loosely following weight watchers from home and walking. I lost 3lb last week which is a start, i have a lot more to lose but it is going in the right direction. I think it is finding the right way for you and starting at the right time too.

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 17:39

Dieting doesn't work...does it?? If diets worked , really worked, you wouldn't be where you are today hating yourself and about to embark on another diet. Maybe this one will work but going on statistics, diets just make you fatter and disordered with the way you eat. The only true way to sort out your body is to eat like a slim person. They only eat when they are hungry and need fuel. When they are full, they stop . Even if they havnt had much. They also eat anything they want but don't overeat it. Diets make you feel that you have failed again when the reality is that diets fail you. Smile

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 17:42

z that's where my comment came from. In response to your post. Hmm

Talkinpeace · 11/11/2013 17:48

"Diet" means "what you eat"
therefore "what you eat" should be the right amount to keep you at the weight you want to be.

and yes, that was the lightbulb for a lot of the 5:2 people - to eat like a slim person
(and lots of slim people routinely skip meals without snacking and have done for years and years)

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 17:59

Talk a lot of people on the 5:2 14:10 or 16:8 diets are also having a hell of a time stopping bingeing. Ive seen the threads. These mini starves are causing disordered eating and its just another fad. Yes of course the word diet meant are way of eating but nowdays that is really not the case is it.

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 17:59

"our"

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 18:26

Talk how many diets have you been on? Can you tell me what makes this one different please as im genuinely interested to know.

Talkinpeace · 11/11/2013 18:35

WW twelve years ago for six months
weight creeping back on until
5:2 since last September, since last December maintaining at my "happy weight"

what is different?
Simply put, 5:2 is not actually a weight loss programme. Its about intermittent fasting for the long term health benefits.
The weight loss (among those who are overweight) is incidental.
And for those of us who are now comparatively lean, the health impacts are why we carry on.
It also means that with tight management two days a week you can relax a bit five days a week (or in the case of me yesterday drink too much and eat loads of cheese Grin ) while still staying at a weight that makes my knees not hurt.

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 19:47

Thanks Talk. How much weight did you lose on the 5:2 though before you maintained.

Talkinpeace · 11/11/2013 20:16

a stone in a term

specialsubject · 11/11/2013 20:22

5:2 is about eating fewer calories than you burn off. Same as any other weight loss programme. Nothing clever about it. Make sure the starving days don't make you hell to live with.

can your doctor give any advice given your health condition?

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 20:26

Had a look at your profile Talk and you look great so well done you!!

Talkinpeace · 11/11/2013 20:37

Fasting days are not starving days.
They are positive fasts with a clear intention.

I ate much too much yesterday but stopped at 5pm. I then had nothing but cups of tea and water till 7.45 this evening when I had a whole pot of "Tuscan chicken and orzo soup" with some sliced baguette and then an apple. Total = 475 calories. Feel utterly stuffed.
And the clarity of mind that fasting gives me means I've done loads of work today.

Intermittent fasting is NOT about weight loss.
Its about resetting the digestive system - that is why its "intermittent"
A side effect is that those who are over weight tend to lose weight
but thin people do not get any thinner

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 20:50

Talk thing is most people are doing fasting to lose weight, that's the whole point of it for most. To be fair, fasting days are starving days no matter how you dress it up. Not eating for that amount of hours is starving the body and then overeating and feeling stuffed is not good at all for the digestive system. You see that to me is where it brings on the binge mentality which a lot of the people on the threads talk about sometimes eating huge amounts of food on a normal day. This is disordered eating. Its health benefits are more aimed at men than women anyway. It is said that this woe is not good at all for women with regard to their hormones etc. Im sure you have read the reports yourself. It is said that the best fast for women, according to Marks Daily Apple, is to do a 14:10. What do you think?

Raddy · 11/11/2013 20:51

Talkinpeace - you look amazing. I may have said that once before.

I am inspired to do 5:2 again, I'd like to be 9st for Christmas. I did it earlier this year and loved how it felt. I lost half a stone without trying.

Where do you find your TDEE?

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 20:53

I know if I go for long periods without eating I also get a "high" feeling but then Im rewarded afterwards by a crashing 24 hour migraine which is not good. Its not recommended for anyone who suffers from migraines. Think the 14:10 would probably be better for sufferers.

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 20:54

Did you keep the weight off that you lost earlier in the year Raddy.

Goldensunnydays81 · 11/11/2013 20:56

Drs are pretty rubbish when it comes to PCOS just say that lose weight and you will be ok which is fine but with pcos it is twice as hard to lose weight :( which just makes it a bit depressing and I just end up losing motivation!!
Zzz we should definitely start a support page!

Do you suffer much with other symptoms? My worst thing is the hair Confused just makes me feel so depressed and unfeminine and then I just end up comfort eating which makes the symptoms well aaahhh!!

BsshBossh · 11/11/2013 20:59

zazza you can do it! Surf the weightloss threads and find a supportive one that suits you. I found two that I keep posting on whose posters have been instrumental in helping me lose 5.5 stones in 1.5 years (first a MyFitnessPal calorie counting thread then/also a 5:2 fasting thread). Support is your friend :)
