And here we go, another new thread for another new week

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 12/07/2006 11:14

There were about seven threads on Christmas day last year asking what she'd got me for Christmas! It can only be a disappointment this year; how can she top those?

Am a bit peed off with her at the moment, she sent dd a card with some money in it because dd had a brilliant report (her first - and I cried ) but she couldn't stop herself putting little digs at me in the card for dd to read Still, at least her antics provide the odd bit of amusement for other MNers!

Suejonez, I was really interested in what you were saying on the other thread about insulin resistance and low GI ... would love to find out more because it sounds as if it's something I would benefit from.

Well done Coppertop. I've lost 3 pounds, no idea how! Haven't been particularly 'virtuous'. No rhyme or reason to it sometimes. I'm also amazed at how much my weight can fluctuate - I did do a sneaky weigh in on Sunday morning, and if I'd reported in then, I could have reported a 6lb weight loss. Weighed Monday evening (can you tell I'm getting a bit obsessed - must stop) and had gone back up to previous weight. But also on the plus side, I'd ordered a linen skirt from Boden in a size 20 which came yesterday, and it fits fine. Maybe a touch snug, but completely wearable. And I'm still sending it back, because I won't get much wear out of it this year, and next summer I intend to be a whole lot smaller. Don't think DH could quite believe it! I am looking forward to buying some autumn/winter clothes, though. Hurray for black opaque tights.

suejonez · 12/07/2006 15:32

WWB - I will refresh my memory about all the research I did about GI and GL and post it on next weeks thread.

I'll have to rival you for present stories with what my brother buys me. He doesn't sound as tight as your MIL but I have had from him in the past - a door mat (floral - bought when I was in my uber-trendy professional girl minimalist flat) , a felt rabbit doortop dressed in lederhosen, a lancaster university tshirt in dayglo yellow with acid green logo across the front, a Christian lacroix 1994 collection coffee table book for Xmas 1998 (never bought a piece of desiigner clothing in my life and if I could afford it, ClC would NOT be my first choice, or second or third). And no none of these were a joke or intentionally ironic.

Where did he find a lederhosen bunny doorstop ffs?!

JackieNo · 12/07/2006 15:32

Sorry - bit of an epic.

suejonez · 12/07/2006 15:33

JackieNo - I have also had a good weight loss - also inedplicable as i've eaten out a lot and it was my neices 18th last weekend - cue lots of celebration. I even had a glass of wine

suejonez · 12/07/2006 15:35

inedplicable?! inexplicable would have made so much more sense! Funny how one letter wrong in certain words makes them really difficult to understand whereas others are hardly noticeable.

WigWamBam · 12/07/2006 15:36

Are you sure none of those presents were ironic, sue? He can't seriously have such poor taste! Am very much in awe of the lederhosen-clad rabbit doorstop though; that must have taken some finding ...

OP posts:
coppertop · 12/07/2006 15:44

Sorry but I'm PMSL at the lederhosen-clad doorstop!

Congratulations, Jackie! 3lbs is a fantastic loss.

suejonez · 12/07/2006 15:44

Absolutely sure it was all seriously meant - he tells me when presents are meant to be funny (indistinguishable from the non-funny ones though)

Many many of the presents got lost in my move three years ago. They must have all been in the same box which mysteriously got lost.

I try to give him present suggestions which you can't get wrong with no colour choice to make eg "I'd like some Liz Earle body wash please. No not in yellow, they don't make it in yellow. Oh how nice you bought me some strange donut shaped stove top thing with no handle instead. You're right I'm sure thas much more useful Thats such a lovely surprise, I'm sure I'll use it all the time to, errr, oh I see it's for frying bacon on. Silly me, been using a grill or frying pan all these years. I'm so pleased you bought me a pointless gadget which will now sit in my cupboard until I move again and it gets lost" (Xmas 2005)

suejonez · 12/07/2006 15:46

I wish I had photgraphed the bunny nobody ever beleives me - it even had a felt basket with a mini plastic cabbage in it.

WigWamBam · 12/07/2006 15:47

Oh, it gets better ...

OP posts:
Fauve · 12/07/2006 15:48

I have stayed the same again - but at least I haven't put on, despite hormonal mayhem (not preggers or TTC, though ).

suejonez · 12/07/2006 15:50

this is my brother who like my terracotta wash in my old kitchen which took many hours of careful research and application to look fantastic (though I say so myself). Brother liked it so he and SIL got brown paint (the polite colour descriptoin would be donkey brown) and smeared it onto the cream walls of their toilet. Guess what it looked like?

You could always hear the sharp intake of breathe of anyone new going to the loo at their house.

JackieNo · 12/07/2006 15:51

Suejonez, love the idea of the Rabbit doorstop.

WigWamBam · 12/07/2006 15:51

Now I really AM PMSL ...

OP posts:
JackieNo · 12/07/2006 15:52

And eeeuw to your brother's toilet. Lovely.

suejonez · 12/07/2006 15:58

I always tried not to touch the walls when I went in there, and I KNEW it was only paint. What upset me most was that they thought it looked like my beautiful kitchen

In their new house they inherited a rusty brown carpet and though it was horrible I understood that you can't always afford to replace these things in one go. I would have put a rug down with some vaguely creamy browny tones to tone it down and painted the walls cream. So they...
Painted the walls yellow and brought green patterned curtains.

coppertop · 12/07/2006 15:59

ROFL at the toilet paint! I can't help wondering what equally thoughtful gifts your brother buys for SIL....

I forgot to add that your MIL sounds like a poisonous old bag, WWB. at her making comments about you via dd's card.

JackieNo · 12/07/2006 16:06

I'm always at how horrible some people's MILs are. Mine can be annoying, but not malicious. Still looking forward to Christmas, though, to hear about WWB's present (sorry).

WigWamBam · 12/07/2006 17:41

My MIL is ... nah, better not say too much, would only get myself all hot under the collar. Needless to say she has been the topic of endless posts on MN.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 12/07/2006 17:42

I know, WWB - I have followed them in horrified fascination.

WigWamBam · 12/07/2006 17:47

Ah well, it gives people something to laugh at/sit open-mouthed at

OP posts:
alittlebitshy · 12/07/2006 17:54

I think I've stayed the same ish for the last 2 weeks..... The first week was when i was at my parents. But this last week I am a bit perplexed by as I've been pretty good. I think. Oh, did have piza express meal out and ben and jerry's at cinema on friday and fortnum's afternoon tea (pressie to my mum for her birthday) sat.... maybe that'll explain it.

Got a piggy weekend coming up. My birthday. Off out to bluewater on sat with best friend and we'll have lunch and dinner out, and I will not try extememly hard on both meals... maybe a salad at lunch (though pizza express so not overly virtuous... better than all carbs thought i spose). Then on my actual birthday on sunday dh and i are going out for an indian.

I have come to the conclusion though that although I am trying to lose weight and have lost 1.5 stones since mid may (2 months wow) I need to live a bit cos otherwise I will go beserk and pig out needlessly in the eves which was always my downfall. Nothing big meal wise til end of July when one meal out for our anniversary. BIg issue will be in august when we take teens from church on a youth pilgrimage and we camp, so not very easy to eat super well. argh.

got about a stone more to come off til i get to my mental target so i suppose that as long as i keep on losing as a rule, but manage to maintain rather than gain on an exceptional week i'm doing well??? Just scared that maybe i'm losing my motivation. although on the plus side I have not been tempted to go back to old ways and when in my home situation I am manging and am keen to eat well.

scuse all the runimations.... all i meant to do was say "no change" for WWB's list

alittlebitshy · 12/07/2006 17:55

and i've created another new word there. meant RUMINATIONS. that'll teach me to use big words

JackieNo · 12/07/2006 17:58

alittlebitshy, I think you're right - we do have to have some 'treats' - the trick might be to just have the odd one here and there, and try not to let it escalate into eating that way all the time. After all, it's all swings and roundabouts - cut back a bit here, then you can go a bit wild another time. Well done on maintaining - and you're over half way to your target, which is fab.
