Will my new daily run actually help me lose weight???

I have taken to running around the block every morning. It's just under a mile and takes me about 12-15 mins and I've been doing it for a couple of weeks. Mind you, it is hard work and despite this and low cal, no wine, no chocolate diet, not a lot is happening. I know it's not been long but I am already demoralised...

It will be burning around 100 calories each day - received wisdom is around 100 calories per mile, though this adjust according to bodyweight and body composition. Do it 35 times and you'll have burnt enough calories to lose a pound!

It's not all doom and gloom as it does contribute a bit more to your deficit so it will help.

And it helps you improve your cardiovascular fitness so it is a good thing!

I'm doing three miles, three times a week. Didn't start to lose anything until started calorie counting with MFP. And I put that down to the cc rather than the exercise. Still haven't lost a lot, but have gone down two belt holes in two weeks!

I think ordering some clothes with my new ideal weight in mind was a bad decision. They arrived today and I look like a heifer in them! Is MFP good then? I started doing MapmyRun, but it broadcast everything I did on Facebook which was just embarrassing!

MFP is amazing. Or has been for me, anyway. A real eye-opener. I've become really aware of the little nibbly things I would normally eat, like chunks of cheese when making tea, kids leftovers etc. I don't have any links to Facebook or anything, just share with DH.

I'm not hungry, but look forward to meals! Haven't got a lot to lose though - under a stone, post babies weight I suppose (DC are 4 and 1).

Running will benefit your heart and contribute to weight loss in a minor way but there's no getting around dietary restriction as a way of losing weight.

I've always read that losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. Certainly for me I lost loads of weight just using MFP (no exercise at all) and now 5:2 fasting but I exercise nowadays to feel good and tone up the flesh :)

Couch 2 5k might be good for you? Running round the block aimlessly will mean you've given up by the end of the month.

Goal setting is your friend!

Yes, I think you might be right HSS, maybe I need to work towards an aim... I'll try that app. My 12 minute run fits into my day though as I can fit it in before DH goes to work, and working fulltime myself it's the only chance I get to exercise (DH works late too). Still, I can feel it is doing me good - better digestion, feel brighter mentally, skin better so that in itself is a good motivator.

I've downloaded MFP. I get 1200 cals a day - that's really not a lot! Still by 16 October I'll be my target weight apparently...

minko I ignored MFP's recommended 1200 cals - far too low (for me) and I knew I'd not last on that. So I went to the website below, put in all my stats, and worked out a more sensible daily calorie total for me (turned out to be around 1800 cals, or 20% calorie reduction, for my height 5 ft 4, gender, age etc). I then manually put that into MFP and blatantly ignored it telling me it would take me 5 weeks to lose a lb! Turned out I was losing a couple of lbs a week on my "high" calories Grin.
