New to weight loss and diet ... help and advice?

Hello there. I lost the weighing scales in our house a year ago. I have two young children (nearly 2 and nearly 4). Was in a friend's loo today and stepped on their scales. I'm about stone heavier than I used to be.
I thought I'd noticed clothes getting tighter....I'm now nearly 10 stone. I used to be around 9.
I'm not radically upset about this. Maybe moderately upset as I have never lost weight in my life I don't know how to start. I've always been much the same weight all my life and I would really like to get back to where I was, as I can only see things creeping up and up. I also think I need to do more (some) exercise. I work full time, am really knackered, and will find it hard to give up crisps and wine.
Any advice on how to begin a diet/change in eating? I don't want to be eating radically special or different things from my DH (who is not really very interested in losing weight and loves food) so specialised diets not really on.
Any advice really gratefully received.
