and today I tried on some clothes in next and their bloody three way mirror showed me what I honestly look like from the back I resemble a blancmange crossed with the back end of a lorry

How/why have I done this to myself? I feel gross.

Don't be too down on yourself.

It's not you, it's those mirrors in Next. They distort badly, they really do.

I got a horrible shock last week when I tried something on in there. They make you look much wider than you actually are. I'm certain I'm not that shape!

However, it has motivated me on to move more/eat less. So I've started the C25K running programme and cut down my portion sizes. I need to work on the evening wine & snacking habit though.

I started C25K about 6 months ago but gave up when the snow started.
I've put on a shedload of weight since then and I don't know that I'd be brave enough to run in public now.

I'm about 3 and a half stone overweight, and the biggest I've ever been.

I'm on my second go at C25K. I started last summer but got a knee injury at week 5 & lacked the motivation to go back.

I'm also a couple of stone overweight (actually don't know by how much - only my GP knows how much I weigh & I don't want to know as it will make me feel worse). I have to shift it as my blood pressure is too high & my clothes don't fit.

Could you maybe try hopping over on to one of the C25K boards for a bit of support & have another go? I've just joined a couple of the threads over there & there are others just starting the programme. They are a very friendly & supportive bunch.

The running in public thing is awful I know. I'm using treadmill at the moment (got one at home) because my knees are a bit dodgy. But last time out I used to go out at dusk dressed all in black with a baseball cap on & pretend I was walking the dog!! After a few weeks I found I didn't actually care what people thought of how I looked - at least I was trying to do something about it.

Could you use the experience of the mirrors in Next thing as your motivation to lose weight? I'm using the raised blood pressure & tight clothes thing to motivate me.
