Week 1 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp starts here!

BIWI · 29/04/2013 10:34

Morning all! There are over 150 of us signed up for Bootcamp, so it?s going to be busy I think. If you haven?t already put your name on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, here is the link so that you can add yourself:

Just add yourself to the bottom of the list and the lovely WillieWaggleDagger, our SpreadsheetMeister, will ensure that it is re-sorted to remain alphabetised. Don?t touch any of the blue columns!
We work in pounds, but if you are a metric person, there?s a tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet that says ?conversion? which will recalculate from metric to imperial.

It?s up to you whether you choose to enter your actual weight or to index it, i.e. you start today at 100, and for every pound you lose you drop by 1.

You will also see on the tabs on the spreadsheet the rules for Bootcamp, as well as rules for those of you who are vegetarian, and rules for Bootcamp Light, which you can move on to after two weeks of Bootcamp.

There are only 10 rules, and the thinking behind Bootcamp is that it should be as straightforward as possible to follow. If you follow the rules (yes, all of them ? and especially no 7!), you will lose weight.

The idea behind Bootcamp is that we have a strict fortnight of low carbing, to break the addiction that we have to carbs and sweet things. You are making sure that you are switching your body from burning carbs to burning fat, and you will go into what is called ketosis in these first two weeks.

All that this means is that you are fat-burning.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you haven?t done it before, you may feel a bit rubbish ? you may have headaches or just feel generally tired and achey. This is known as ?carb flu? ? and it means that you are withdrawing from carbohydrates. Sugar (which is essentially how the body views and uses carbs) is highly addictive, and your body will be craving it. Don?t give in! After a couple of days you will feel much better.

If you are feeling odd or ill, make sure that you are getting plenty of sodium, potassium and magnesium. Add salt to your food and cook with salt. Try making a drink from Marmite/Bovril. Good foods to include in your diet are spinach, salmon and avocado. Drink plenty of water and make sure that you really are keeping your fat levels up. Take some paracetamol if you have a headache (not aspirin or ibuprofen as these drugs can impede weight loss).

Yoghurty. Am in the same boat. I've been on boot camp light for months and am really missing the berries, nuts, choc and paleo pancakes. I definitely ate to much of these and whilst I never actually put on weight, I haven't lost any since December.

Bessie123 · 02/05/2013 21:45

I had a small g&t and a magnum mini today as a super lame celebration for getting a new job. And for loads more money than the bastards I used to work for we're paying me. I was really good up till then

I made someone's Auvergne dish this evening. Layered slices of raw aubergine, smear of tomato sauce and slices of Edam, seasoned and added a bit of oil and baked for an hour. It was really nice, at v much for the recipe Flowers

Yama · 02/05/2013 21:47

Congrats and well done on the new job Bessie! G&T well in order. Smile

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/05/2013 21:49

WOOHOO I am so pleased for you congratulations. That'll show those wankers that you used to work for!

BIWI · 02/05/2013 21:50

Yay! Fantastic news, Bessie! Flowers
No wonder you're celebrating. Bloody well done. You deserve it.

Hi all, I've got a bad stomach Sad but am not cheating my supermarket doesn't sell celeriac and I don't like swede so am missing out on the deliciousness.
What I have done with the yoghurt is add some flaxseed and cream to help with constipation and making it taste a bit better.
I have lost 2" around my tummy since Monday Shock, the weekend is going to be hard I fear, we do movie night with treats, what can I do instead?
I will not cheat I will not cheat....

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/05/2013 22:42

TREATS and not cheats someone said before and that helps
Me a lot.

My treats are things like baked Camembert with celery and cucumber. Or things I don't eat daily like that. Smoked salmon and cream cheese
Rolled up into canapés, prawns and mayo, olives, etc...

JustasmallGless · 02/05/2013 22:45

Absolutely treats not cheats
Think of a really nice meal that you could have before the movie
Steak with fried leeks and mushrooms in a creamy Diane sauce?

Or make some Parmesan crisps to nibble on?

Bessie123 · 02/05/2013 23:10

Make some Kale crisps. I am loving them at the moment.

timidviper · 02/05/2013 23:14

I went to Tesco today and found their large packs of sausages are half price, the carb count is 2.9 per sausage I think. They also have a range I haven't seen before called HECK. They make a gluten-free sausage which is very low in carbs.

Am off to the gym tomorrow so am struggling to think of a bootcamp breakfast as I get dizzy and faint if I have not had a few carbs. I usually make cream cheese pancakes with yoghurt and berries, maybe even with a few nuts if I am living dangerously! Suggestions on a postcard please...

twinklestar2 · 02/05/2013 23:17

Timid - what about scrambled eggs?

rubybricks · 02/05/2013 23:17

congrats Bessie!

just logging in so i don't forget - had mackerel salad with cheese and dressing for lunch, pork loin (grilled but then chucked in the frying pan when i realised my mistake), leeks fried in butter, half an avocado.

am going to have to try and meal plan a bit better, thought i was doing ok as still managing to feed the family, but my plate looked a bit sad compared to theirs which were heaped with potatoes/sweetcorn as well...

was out late tonight so came home and automatically reached for something...chimichurri olives from sainsbos (delicious) - but am sure it was just habit and tiredness.

milliemoomay · 03/05/2013 05:48

I weighed myself this morning (I started a day late on BC) and sadly haven't lost a pound

I don't know what I'm doing wrong....this was what I ate yesterday - sounds okay doesn't it?

B: egg and avocado with a froth of mayo
L: handful of olives and feta and salmon fillet with butter
D: Beef stew & salad
Lots of water (some of it fizzy)

changeforthebetter · 03/05/2013 05:55

not doing too well Sad last night's tea was fried eggs bacon and mushrooms serve with iceberg lettuce cucumber and mayo and avocado. I felt a bit sick after. I ended up adding 3 pieces of tinned fruit. I had a horrid day at work and what I am missing most is not bread or pasta but comforting cup of horlicks/ovaltine at bedtime. in the end I made.cocoa with half semi.skim half.cream cocoa powder and an eighth of a.spoon on stevia - not bootcampy but needed!

thekitchenfairy · 03/05/2013 06:23

....I am 2lb down since Monday! Can't believe it!

B: ff total yoghurt, cream, cinnamon
L: tuna mayo, coleslaw, cold chicken, lettuce, radish, cuc
d: sirloin, mushrooms fried in butter, iceberg
S: baby bel, slice cheddar

Cream tea celebration at work... I ate the clotted cream but left everything else much to amusement of colleagues who are already v worried for my arteries at watching my cream in coffee and butter on my radishes....

Big weekend challenge is to not celebrate sunshine and fall into a glass of chilled wine every night and undo all the good work!

Happy Friday everyone!

ZimboMum · 03/05/2013 07:00

Happy Friday!

Yesterday I had:

B: One slice of bacon, two eggs fried in butter with dollop of mayo (7.30am)
L: BIWI's coleslaw with roast chicken drumsticks (spread out between 11.30-2pm)
S: two slices naice ham rolled up with some mayo inside
D: Coriander lamb with tomato vinaigrette* (Low Carb Gourmet cookbook) with butter fried purple sprouting broc and salad (8pm)

About 4l of water and 2 cups fennel and nettle tea.

  • before I get lynched, the recipe calls for "two medium ripe tomatoes" and I can never work out if that means "two medium sized tomatoes that are ripe" or "two half-ripe tomatoes". In any event, I used one (ONE!) cherry tomato that weighed in at a whopping 10g... :D

I know there's been a lot of chat about feeling hungry. I felt hungry at 11.30 but had quite a fat laden breakfast and drank about 2l of water, so not quite sure what else I can do - another egg or more mayo? Hence I started lunch earlier than usual. Can't wait for the famed 'not feeling hungry' to kick in!

4lbs down since Monday, woohoo!

MrsHerculePoirot · 03/05/2013 07:42

I would have a bigger breakfast - I usually have mushrooms, two bacon and two eggs. That keeps me going until about 1 ish. Or have a snack mid morning if you would prefer eg a babybel just to boost you until lunch?

milliemoomay if you lit three days that would help. You lunch does 't
Look very much, could you add some salad to it? And maybe have some green veg with you stew? Also did you ke the stew? Often they have carby veg, flour etc in... Having said that it does look generally fine so keep the faith, keep chugging the water and it will come
Off very soon...

JakeBullet · 03/05/2013 08:05

I am here, starting late for various reasons but am here. Hoping I have not undone all the good work from the last Bootcamp. Seeing my counsellor today and talking some things through as it has been a difficult week for me. Anyhow have had bacon for breakfast (teas all I could manage). Have tuna and little gem lettuce for lunch and am making burgers with homemade coleslaw for supper.

timidviper · 03/05/2013 08:13

Thanks Twinkle. I often have scrambled eggs for breakfast but have found, when doing bootcamp previously I tend to go very lightheaded if I exercise after a meal with next to no carbs.

I guess I'll stick with my usual pre-trainer breakfast even though, strictly speaking, I shouldn't have berries for a week or two.

JustasmallGless · 03/05/2013 08:15

Morning losers,

Those who are not daily weighers or not seeing any change- measure! In fact I would advise everyone to measure at the start. Particularly when we get to those tricky weeks 4-5 when you rarely see a loss on the scales

AngieAir · 03/05/2013 08:15

Last night I surprised myself with freezer meal of desperation:

Frozen salmon fillet
Frozen broccoli - loads
Cream sauce: garlic, cream, tbsp of tomato purée.
It was amazing!

I'm tracking on mfp to make sure I've got the right idea about what is low carb. I had 29 carbs yesterday. Is that what I should be aiming for?

LackaDAISYcal · 03/05/2013 08:17

Feeling really ill this morning :( shaky, wobbly legs, sweaty and grumbly tummy. Carb flu, ketosis, or bug?

But, scales say -2.5lbs this morning Grin

JustasmallGless · 03/05/2013 08:18

Zimbomum - if y only started on Monday you won't get there just yet, but for me even going 4 hours between meals without snacking was a major achievement. I would say if you are hungry at 11.30 and REALLY Hungry then eat your lunch then.
