Week 1 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp starts here!

Morning all! There are over 150 of us signed up for Bootcamp, so it?s going to be busy I think. If you haven?t already put your name on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, here is the link so that you can add yourself:

Just add yourself to the bottom of the list and the lovely WillieWaggleDagger, our SpreadsheetMeister, will ensure that it is re-sorted to remain alphabetised. Don?t touch any of the blue columns!
We work in pounds, but if you are a metric person, there?s a tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet that says ?conversion? which will recalculate from metric to imperial.

It?s up to you whether you choose to enter your actual weight or to index it, i.e. you start today at 100, and for every pound you lose you drop by 1.

You will also see on the tabs on the spreadsheet the rules for Bootcamp, as well as rules for those of you who are vegetarian, and rules for Bootcamp Light, which you can move on to after two weeks of Bootcamp.

There are only 10 rules, and the thinking behind Bootcamp is that it should be as straightforward as possible to follow. If you follow the rules (yes, all of them ? and especially no 7!), you will lose weight.

The idea behind Bootcamp is that we have a strict fortnight of low carbing, to break the addiction that we have to carbs and sweet things. You are making sure that you are switching your body from burning carbs to burning fat, and you will go into what is called ketosis in these first two weeks.

All that this means is that you are fat-burning.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you haven?t done it before, you may feel a bit rubbish ? you may have headaches or just feel generally tired and achey. This is known as ?carb flu? ? and it means that you are withdrawing from carbohydrates. Sugar (which is essentially how the body views and uses carbs) is highly addictive, and your body will be craving it. Don?t give in! After a couple of days you will feel much better.

If you are feeling odd or ill, make sure that you are getting plenty of sodium, potassium and magnesium. Add salt to your food and cook with salt. Try making a drink from Marmite/Bovril. Good foods to include in your diet are spinach, salmon and avocado. Drink plenty of water and make sure that you really are keeping your fat levels up. Take some paracetamol if you have a headache (not aspirin or ibuprofen as these drugs can impede weight loss).

Changeforthebetter- you know what BIWI is going to say. No fruit on Bootcamp!
It sounds like you are emotional eating- have you got the Idiot Proof Diet book? If not can highly recommend about emotional eating.

Treats not cheats- the idea is to treat yourself with yummy low carb food which you wouldn't normally eat rather than eating carbs for comfort

BIWI · 03/05/2013 08:31

change - please, please, please don't hit the fruit! You may as well just chomp on lumps of sugar. All that you are doing is undoing everything else you are doing. And Gless is right - emotional eating is something that many of us have to address. Did you read the link I posted upthread about it? It's really worth having a read.

Try and find 'treat not cheat' foods that will do the trick.

LackaDAISYcal - sorry you're not feeling too good. It could be carb withdrawal, and if so then you should be through it soon. But it sounds more like a bug to me if you're also sweaty - are you running a temperature?

Take it easy today, make sure you're drinking enough water, and eat foods that are easy on your tummy.

timid - have you talked to your trainer about food pre-training and why you might feel like this? I would have thought that eggs would be a perfect food - lots of protein and also fat. How about some yoghurt?

OP posts:
BIWI · 03/05/2013 08:36

Zimbo - your meals look fine. Your body is still in the process of adjusting to low carb, so if you're hungry then you must eat. You will soon find, though, that you can go right through to mealtimes (often beyond) without feeling hungry.

I have asked the trainer BIWI but he suggested slow release carbs like wholemeal toast with my eggs, etc. I've been having cream cheese pancakes with a spoonful of peanut butter in topped with yoghurt and a few berries which seems to do the trick so I may stick to that even though it is not perfect bootcamp.

I do have a tendency to low blood sugar and before this WOE would often feel shaky, irritable and unwell if I was late eating, etc but I am much better now, only seem to suffer it when exercising

LackaDAISYcal · 03/05/2013 08:49

Thanks BIWI. Trying to drink more water, but taking it easy not an option. Hospital appointment, then a market research thing that I signed up to do.

BIWI · 03/05/2013 08:49

Well, if you were following Dr Charles Clark, he allows one slice of wholemeal bread a day, so why not try that on gym days? (I know it's not Bootcamp, but I don't want you passing out!)

OP posts:
BIWI · 03/05/2013 08:49

... and if you kept the rest of your carbs low on gym days, can't see that it would be too much of a compromise

5lb down from Friday when I started and 2 from Monday's official weight. Going to try the cauliflower crust pizza tonight.

JustasmallGless · 03/05/2013 09:13

Angieair, we don't track carbs on Bootcamp but that sounds about right however just watch Mfp as it is in American measurements for carbs which are different to ours. Something about net carbs?
Sure someone much wiser than me will be able to tell you all about it

timidviper · 03/05/2013 09:26

I might try that BIWI thanks. I love Bergen Bread which is lower carb than wholemeal and has lots of seeds in it that are healthy for us menopausal ladies so I will get some of that.

BIWI · 03/05/2013 09:27

AngelAir - as Gless says, no need to count carbs (and I've seen some dubious counts reported from MFP). But yes, 29g carbs sounds perfect. As long as you are eating Fat:Protein:Carbs and following Bootcamp rules, you will be fine!

Another 1lb down so 5.5 lb in total ...get in!!!!

What is surprising me about this is the way it is highlighting my eating habit. Like clockwork every night about 9pm I get the munchies, I am mean its like a proper addiction I have to force myself not to eat :/ hoping I will break the habit soon. It is scary though as I don't feel hungry I just have to nibble on something.

Never missed a potato or pasta yet though (which has surprised me as I used ot have pots with every meal almost) I just miss the SUGAR.

Keep going everyone, my jeans feel all baggy and everyfink!!!

justpoppy · 03/05/2013 09:45

Morning all.

Dinner last night was steak, buttered spinach and leeks fried in butter with a dollop of cream. Lidl yogurt for pud. Am drinking loads and loads of water too and just one cup of tea a day with a splash of milk.

Breakfast this morning was egg mayo (again!) and lunch will be a salad of some description. Out for dinner tonight which fills me with dread as its a very limited menu and everything comes with chips.

Weight is not budging tho which is not good especially when approaching a long weekend when the temptation to say "sod it its not working lets drink wine" is very very strong.

rubybricks · 03/05/2013 09:49

morning all, just signing in with a stonking headache, had first cuppa of the day and about to prepare breakfast - fried eggs and avocado with a sprinkling of mature cheddar, so delicious i am actually looking forward to it even though i feel rotten.

look forward to catching up with everyone's progress when i've time to read the thread properly - it all moves so fast!

Doshusallie · 03/05/2013 09:50

2 HB eggs for brekkie.

JustasmallGless · 03/05/2013 09:54

Just poppy - get the measuring tape out.

I promise there will have been some difference somewhere....

justpoppy · 03/05/2013 09:56

Thanks JustasmallGless I'll measure later.

milliemoomay · 03/05/2013 10:03

Thanks for the boost MrsHerculePoirot...really needed that. I did make the stew myself - just beef and veg in the oven with spices for a couple of hours and then I chucked in a bit of sourcream after.

I weighed myself 4 times this a.m to make sure that I read it right - not even an ounce off!!

Will try harder - you're right Hercule - probably not eating enough.

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/05/2013 10:14

Hello everyone.

I went out last night for dinner. I had chilli and salad. And two glasses of prosecco. I KNOW!

This morning 10 stone 3 and 1 ounce. I tried juggling around on the scales to drop that damn ounce but it wouldn't budge.

So 3 lbs lost since Monday which is rather good (considering I still haven't been to the loo).

I have to be good today and for the weekend - I normally follow a very vague low carb diet in the week but eat what I like at the weekends. Starting with cocktails (the most declasses ones you can find) and then a fair amount of crap all weekend. But not this weekend!

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 03/05/2013 10:20

It is Friday! woohoo

Well, last night wasnt an Indian Meal but it was Thai, totally blindsided me! But I think I did well. Various starters, so ate prawns, thai crab cake, chicken satay and then 2 different curries, garlic veggies and just 2 spoons of jasmine rice. Wine was involved, but no dessert and I am drinking loads of water today.

I am desperate for some hangover stodge today, but have had 2 slices of manchego cheese and a bowl of raw brocolli, carrot, red cabbage and courgette salad for breakfast. It is also DD bday.

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/05/2013 10:21

lol at 'wine was involved'

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/05/2013 10:25

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 03/05/2013 10:26
