Week 1 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp starts here!

BIWI · 29/04/2013 10:34

Morning all! There are over 150 of us signed up for Bootcamp, so it?s going to be busy I think. If you haven?t already put your name on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, here is the link so that you can add yourself:

Just add yourself to the bottom of the list and the lovely WillieWaggleDagger, our SpreadsheetMeister, will ensure that it is re-sorted to remain alphabetised. Don?t touch any of the blue columns!
We work in pounds, but if you are a metric person, there?s a tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet that says ?conversion? which will recalculate from metric to imperial.

It?s up to you whether you choose to enter your actual weight or to index it, i.e. you start today at 100, and for every pound you lose you drop by 1.

You will also see on the tabs on the spreadsheet the rules for Bootcamp, as well as rules for those of you who are vegetarian, and rules for Bootcamp Light, which you can move on to after two weeks of Bootcamp.

There are only 10 rules, and the thinking behind Bootcamp is that it should be as straightforward as possible to follow. If you follow the rules (yes, all of them ? and especially no 7!), you will lose weight.

The idea behind Bootcamp is that we have a strict fortnight of low carbing, to break the addiction that we have to carbs and sweet things. You are making sure that you are switching your body from burning carbs to burning fat, and you will go into what is called ketosis in these first two weeks.

All that this means is that you are fat-burning.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you haven?t done it before, you may feel a bit rubbish ? you may have headaches or just feel generally tired and achey. This is known as ?carb flu? ? and it means that you are withdrawing from carbohydrates. Sugar (which is essentially how the body views and uses carbs) is highly addictive, and your body will be craving it. Don?t give in! After a couple of days you will feel much better.

If you are feeling odd or ill, make sure that you are getting plenty of sodium, potassium and magnesium. Add salt to your food and cook with salt. Try making a drink from Marmite/Bovril. Good foods to include in your diet are spinach, salmon and avocado. Drink plenty of water and make sure that you really are keeping your fat levels up. Take some paracetamol if you have a headache (not aspirin or ibuprofen as these drugs can impede weight loss).

I am so missing the wine. A gorgeous day should be celebrated..how long till we can drink, and whats the lowest carb choice. Champagne???

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 02/05/2013 17:41

champagne or spirits (clean spirits, so vodka, gin) with soda water, slice of lime...

But I am not encouraging you to drink at all.

Bootcamp light looks good for me.

Today I have roast chicken with roasted courgette, garlic, red onion, peppers and cherry toms with some crème fraiche.

I've never had celeriac either. I'll definitely get some to try.

I'm going to write my plan for tomorrow as I find I need to be super organised to stick to a diet with a baby and 2 other children. I've relied heavily on toast, sandwiches and cereal and the weightis not coming off.

b mushroom omelette
l leftover chicken and veg
d pan fried salmon with rocket salad

middleagedspread · 02/05/2013 17:47

So, a bowl of olives & a teesny tiny G& Slimline could be allowed.
Thanks Wink

BIWI · 02/05/2013 17:52

Well, there are artificial sweeteners in the Slimline, so it's not ideal.

The best thing to drink, if you really can't get through Bootcamp without alcohol like me would be something like vodka and soda/sparkling water or golden rum and sparkling water, with lots of ice and a slice of lime/squeeze of fresh lime. Carb-free (apart from any lime juice, which would be negligible) and no artificial sweeteners.

But it's not just about the carbs. Alcohol is a very easy source of fuel and the body will use that first, before it tries to burn any fat, so even if you're not consuming carbs, alcohol can prevent you losing weight.

Go easy, in other words!

The bowl of olives is fine, though Grin

Beechview - I hope there was plenty of fat in all that, and that your creme fraiche was full fat?

OP posts:
JaxTellerIsAllMine · 02/05/2013 18:39

also alcohol can lead to a slippery slope of "I will just have a bit of ..."

Beechview · 02/05/2013 18:46

Unfortunately crème fraiche was half fat but lots of olive oil in the rest

Yama · 02/05/2013 18:57

I am touched by all your good wishes. Thanks to you all, you lovely people you.

I had the most satisfying dinner - bolognaise (always better second day), sweetheart cabbage cooked in chicken stock and buttered brocolli.

Lunch was salad with two chicken thighs, mayo and oil.

Brekkie was scrambled wggs with chicken fat, parma ham and butter. Was creamy.

Oh, and my usual Greek yoghurt with milled flaxseed for snack.

A great day food wise. I am back to enjoying my food. I went through a wee bit of a phase there where I didn't. Ach, maybe it's the company. Smile

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/05/2013 19:02

Ooh rum and soda. I wonder what that would be like. Rum and soda and lime.

I must get some vanilla stuff to put in yoghurt, I don't like it on its own, I look like the sad faced woman in the perle du lait advert.

Yama · 02/05/2013 19:09

Gerorf - my dh adds (warmed) frozen berries and milled flaxseed to the yoghurt and it's like eating crumble. Too sweet for me but he has it every night. The pudding that dreams were made of.

Yama · 02/05/2013 19:16

I have just booked our hotel for our time In Helsinki this summer. I was reading through the reviews and came upon this gem:

'Breakfast is sooo goood!! 2-3 sort of cheese, 2-3 different salami, sausages, meatballs, eggs, lots of vegetables and fruits, croissant, cookies, marmalade, chocolate, food without gluten, 3 sort of breads, coffee, tea, juices, milk, lots of different cereals...we could stay in that dining room forever:)'

I have just high-fived the children.

Doshusallie · 02/05/2013 19:46

Just had a very tasty meal of 2 bacon rashers fried in butter, added last night's leftover courgettes and mushrooms, and then added lots (and lots) of chopped goats cheese. Hubba hubba.

And [sounds klaxon] have not drunk any alcohol tonight.

BIWI · 02/05/2013 20:16

GetOrf - Waitrose makes various different vanilla products. You have to be careful with vanilla extracts because they often contain alcohol and/or sugar. They make a vanilla powder which is good, and also 'ndali vanilla extract intense' which is lovely. Combined with Total full fat yoghurt, it's like food from the Gods!

Hello all, just checking in as I find this keeps me on track! Have had a pretty good week, despite work being hellish. Everything has been spot on bootcamp until today when I had a tiny corner of one of the kids sandwiches as we got stuck at a hospital appointment for an hour longer that expected and I had helpfully packed lunches for them but not me and I was starting to gnaw my own arm off. It really was a teeny morsel. Other than that:
B: 1.5 eggs/butter
L: an avocado and some left over chicken from last night's dinner
D: more chicken, bacon, a whole courgette and some mayo.
Shop coming tomorrow will be more inspired with the food.

BIWI · 02/05/2013 20:46

How do you manage to eat 1.5 eggs? Grin

OP posts:
sammisatt · 02/05/2013 20:55

Hello everyone. I feel totally inspired reading the food choices on this thread. Here's me today;

B: mushrooms. Asparagus, 2 boiled eggs, 2 black farmer sausages
L: avocado, bacon , 2 hard boiled eggs (4 in one day!) asparagus, spinach, rocket, watercress, cucumber.
S: pork scratchings pre gym
D: spring greens, buttery steak, bourdin (made a horrible burnt mess. For some reason I thought adding it to the pan would make a creamy sauce) bite of chorizo sausage for pud.

Again, loads of food. Delicious, satisfying food. How i love fat! Have upped the veg today too. Smuggery.

savoirfaire · 02/05/2013 21:09
Grin Me and DH share 3. We used to have 4 between us but now we find that's too much and 1.5 easily gets us through to lunch.
GetOrfMoiLand · 02/05/2013 21:11

Ll at 1.5 eggs.

Thanks biwi I will have a look for the ndsli vanilla stuff.

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/05/2013 21:16

B - bacon, eggs and mushrooms fried in butter
L - roasted goats cheese, avocado and little gem lettuce
D - black farmer sausages and lamb on BBQ (lamb marinaded in olive oil, garlic and rosemary), asparagus and courgettes also bbq'd!

I love BBQ weather! Before this wormi used to think I wasn't a fan of avocado or asparagus, oh how I missed out!

Yoghurty · 02/05/2013 21:22

Ok, so I'm not doing too badly, but I think I underestimated how difficult it would be to backtrack to bootcamp after bootcamp light!

I'm so used to eating nuts, berries and dark Choc (and baking with ground almonds) that I'm having to really think when eating.

Yoghurt with extra cream is helping me not eat berries in the morning and having boiled eggs in the fridge is helping with 'snacks'.

I've been upping my water and adding butter to everything! Grin
