Week 1 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp starts here!

BIWI · 29/04/2013 10:34

Morning all! There are over 150 of us signed up for Bootcamp, so it?s going to be busy I think. If you haven?t already put your name on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, here is the link so that you can add yourself:

Just add yourself to the bottom of the list and the lovely WillieWaggleDagger, our SpreadsheetMeister, will ensure that it is re-sorted to remain alphabetised. Don?t touch any of the blue columns!
We work in pounds, but if you are a metric person, there?s a tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet that says ?conversion? which will recalculate from metric to imperial.

It?s up to you whether you choose to enter your actual weight or to index it, i.e. you start today at 100, and for every pound you lose you drop by 1.

You will also see on the tabs on the spreadsheet the rules for Bootcamp, as well as rules for those of you who are vegetarian, and rules for Bootcamp Light, which you can move on to after two weeks of Bootcamp.

There are only 10 rules, and the thinking behind Bootcamp is that it should be as straightforward as possible to follow. If you follow the rules (yes, all of them ? and especially no 7!), you will lose weight.

The idea behind Bootcamp is that we have a strict fortnight of low carbing, to break the addiction that we have to carbs and sweet things. You are making sure that you are switching your body from burning carbs to burning fat, and you will go into what is called ketosis in these first two weeks.

All that this means is that you are fat-burning.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you haven?t done it before, you may feel a bit rubbish ? you may have headaches or just feel generally tired and achey. This is known as ?carb flu? ? and it means that you are withdrawing from carbohydrates. Sugar (which is essentially how the body views and uses carbs) is highly addictive, and your body will be craving it. Don?t give in! After a couple of days you will feel much better.

If you are feeling odd or ill, make sure that you are getting plenty of sodium, potassium and magnesium. Add salt to your food and cook with salt. Try making a drink from Marmite/Bovril. Good foods to include in your diet are spinach, salmon and avocado. Drink plenty of water and make sure that you really are keeping your fat levels up. Take some paracetamol if you have a headache (not aspirin or ibuprofen as these drugs can impede weight loss).

Funnily enough I have just come back from waitrose and picked up a pack of the frozen garlic, but didn't in the end buy it as I tend to use that easy garlic stuff that keeps in a jar in the fridge. I should have looked closer, they must have been within fingertip reach.... rats!

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/05/2013 13:42
Grin

So near, but so far

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/05/2013 13:42

Tomorrow, tomorrow, there's always tomorrow, it's only a day a-way.....

Doshusallie · 02/05/2013 13:58

2 hardboiled eggs, 1 baby bel, 1 mushroom for breakfast (random)

Huge bowl of homemade broccolli cauliflower, leek and cabbage soup for lunch

1 cuppa decaf tea with milk, berrocca, 2 black decaf coffees, litre of water so far.

interesting book here about how eating sugar makes you fat

sybilfaulty · 02/05/2013 14:33

Good morning so far, must be in ketosis as have swum 1.5 miles and still not very hungry. Had some cheese and olives, lots of water, some scratchings and some lettuce. For any lady struggling with crisps, can I recommend Hogbites (posh pork cracking) which also come in chilli flavour. Bloody tasty and quite a big packet so sorts you out for a while.

Have bought some size 10 trousers. I hope I will get in them soon (currently a muffin topped 12).

Thanks to everyone for the chat, and to the lovely Willie and beautiful BIWI for all their efforts. You both clearly put a lot into the thread and I am very grateful.

Flowers for you both.

Beechview · 02/05/2013 14:40

I'm bf a 6 month old so I don't want to do proper bootcamp, just a no pasta/cereals/potatoes/rice version and I really need to kick the sugar.

Does that sound ok? Can I still come here?

CarolBornAMan · 02/05/2013 15:04

just been out for lunch and thanks to this WOE ordered something in past I would have ignored as being dull and was totally blown away by as it was possibly most lush salad I have ever had - halloumi with grilled vegetables with a greek yog and harissa dressing .. sounds dull but wow it was divine and so flavoursome and full of different textures..

Going to try to recreate at home ..

Feel very full now so not sure about dinner but thinking of roasting a chicken for rest of family and picking at that with some salad covered in dressing ...

Lost weight again last night but appreciate this will start to slow down but the quick results do help with the motivation..

Think BIWI and willie should write a book on this stuff - the forum for the IPD did lead to one of the main contributors getting a book deal with India Knight .. so why not a Mumsnet version!

JustasmallGless · 02/05/2013 15:10

Carol - great idea!

WillieWaggledagger · 02/05/2013 15:14

carol i do find that this WOE has made me much more adventurous with food

and I have to add that bootcamp is all BIWI - i just fiddle with the spreadsheet once a week. she puts in the hard work and has the wisdom!

WillieWaggledagger · 02/05/2013 15:16

welcome, beechview - have a look at the 'bootcamp light rules' in the spreadsheet - does that sound doable for you?

BIWI · 02/05/2013 15:48

Carol - it's in the pipeline ... Wink

Of course you can, Beechview! Welcome.

Finally signed up properly.

I have been doing this since Monday and feel quite tired. Will I feel better soon? I have to stick with this as it's last chance saloon.

BIWI · 02/05/2013 16:04

Yes you will feel better very soon, Bobbly! Make sure you're eating plenty of fat and drinking plenty of water. And are you eating salt on your food/cooking with salt? Salmon, spinach and avocado are all foods you should be eating in these initial days, as it's to do with the balance of your magnesium, potassium and sodium.

So far today

B: Egg mayo
L: Tuna salad

About 2lts of water so far.

Not sure what's for dinner. I got home made lamb stew out of freezer this morning but it has barley in it. That's off limits no?

BIWI · 02/05/2013 16:22

Sadly, yes it is

justpoppy · 02/05/2013 16:24

Gives me a good excuse to stop on the way home and buy a big lump of steak. Grin Thanks BIWI the dog will be vair pleased with a lamb dinner.

WhyIRayLiotta · 02/05/2013 16:27

Mmm I've never had celeriac. But someone mentioned celeriac dauphinois which I am interested in... What does it taste like?

I hate the taste of celery are they the same thing?

BIWI · 02/05/2013 16:29

It is related to celery, and does have a faint taste of celery - but it is much more subtle.

Look at the recipe thread for the celeriac tartiflette recipe - it's gorgeous, and the flavours are strong enough that the celery notes will be minimised.

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp · 02/05/2013 16:59

I LOATHE celery too, can't even walk past a green grocer if they have it on display outside. The smell makes me heave. I also dislike fennel and anything with that aniseedy scent (may have something to do with a Pernod incident as a student Wink)

But I cook with celeriac a lot, love it, and the flavour is different enough that I don't find it a problem at all. Give it a try, and remember double cream is your friend!

One lb down so far this week. (I'm a maintainer from previous bootcamps)

B my usual, 2 eggs scrambled with butter and double cream
L prawns in mayo, wrapped in little gem lettuce leaves, piece of cheese
D not sure but will involve chicken and spinach as I have a large bag to use.

Lidl is fab for LC goodies at very reasonable prices. And their veg is better and lasts longer than any other supermarket I've tried.

WillieWaggledagger · 02/05/2013 17:09

i agree with you about fennel toomuch, the same with dill

celeriac is very slightly celery-ish, but it's more root-vegetable-ish in flavour i think

Ive been doing really well! Bfast today was 2 eggs scrambled, lunch was a pret chicken salad, bottle of fizzy water, dinner tonight is Indian food at a restaurant, so I will have saag paneer and lamb or chicken something.

Im driving, so wont drink, but will have a diet coke or similar. Might have a glass of bubbles to toast my friends' birthday which is why we are out.

Tomorrow is DD 10 birthday, so cake will be involved. Sad I will try to avoid it, but you are only double digits once in life. And I am having steak and salad for dinner tomorrow.

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 02/05/2013 17:32

my favourite summer dish is celeriac remoulade, it is delish and very moreish. Im not a huge fan of celery either, nor dill. Agree with PP who had a pernod incident, pernod and blackcurrant is nice going in, not so nice coming out. Blush
