So here it is - come and weigh in for the last time and tell us how much you've lost in Bootcamp.

I think the key thing was that I really cut back on my alcohol. Obviously I had the two weeks of Boot Camp (except for a slight aberration on Burns Night Wink) but after that I only had a couple of small glasses of wine most weeks. Dh joining me on Boot Camp a few weeks later also helped, as of course he had to go through the full initial two weeks "no alcohol" of full Boot Camp, I joined him in that. Also, if he was tasting wine (he's studying to be a Master of Wine) and his study buddy had brought up a wine I didn't like, I chose not to drink it (previously I would just have drunk it 'cos it was there). Likewise, if it was one of dh's wines that I had tried before, I didn't feel such a strong need to have a large glass - a small glass would do, as I know I can have more later.

I seem to be one of the fortunate ones that is dairy tolerant, as if I feel the need to snack, I'll have a cheese triangle or a Babybel or a tiny sliver of parmesan or a wee portion of greek yoghurt. I've also cheated and continued to drink far too much tea (Darjeeling/Earl grey mix) with milk in it I have changed our milk to full fat.

We've had quite a few roast chickens in the past 10 weeks, which I do in the chicken brick and have lovely crispy skin. Amongst the three of us, we get at least three meals out of that: hot, cold, and then broth made from the stock from the bones and neeps (swede), leeks and a couple of carrots added - and all the rest of the chicken stripped from the bones that had been used to make the stock - plus the left over chicken jus that is produced in the chicken brick. That's usually our Wednesday night supper - and if there is any soup left over, possibly Thursday lunchtime.

Have been having loads of eggs, cream (have even snacked on clotted cream together with a few frozen raspberries Shock), butter, avocados (avocado, bacon and green salad with oily dressing is a favourite lunch). Frittata with parmesan and leeks is another favourite, either for lunch or a light supper.

I've also been doing the Jillian Daniel's 30 Day Shred or "Ripped in 30" 5 days a week (although had a nearly a fortnight "off" with a chest infection that wouldn't lift) - and always made sure to weigh myself after wards, and not drinking too much until I'd done so Blush

I also tried to get a better sleep pattern (I'd been guilty of falling asleep on the couch and finally going through to bed at two or three in the morning well after midnight, much to dh's irritation). I now try to be in bed before midnight every night (up at 7.30, when dh has got the breakfast stuff ready - he's a morning person, I'm not Wink). I've also been trying to make sure to go out for a half hour walk every day (oops - didn't do that today Blush).

Breakfast is usually Lidl yoghurt with some cream and a few blueberries if I have some in the house (none at the moment) and some cinnamon. Alternatively, it might be boiled eggs or scrambled eggs with cream and maybe some bacon (if I can get up a wee bit earlier - I'm the better scrambled egg maker Grin).

Last night we had king prawns with sliced leeks, garlic and a wee bit of lemon juice then some cream cooked in with it and finished off with some yoghurt, served with buttery shredded savoy cabbage.

Tonight we're having pork belly and probably some buttery cauliflower (dh likes cauli as his "potato" substitute) and maybe broccoli or mashed neeps (with yet more butter)

I've noticed that the composting bin has been filling up much more quickly - which is indicative of more veg.

Also had ribeye steak with boursin and cream a couple of times (Lidl had some good offers on), served with shallots and buttery savoy cabbage (and in dh's case, buttery mushrooms ugh ).

In the early days, I also "snacked" on bags of pork scratching but haven't felt the need to do so so much any more. Maybe because I'm on Boot Camp Lite and can have a few nuts. I always have two brazil nuts after my exercises to boost my selenium.

I've not been perfect my any means: I make home made chicken nuggets (since Lidl stopped doing their nice frozen one) and the coating is half and half parmesan and (homemade from a whole loaf that no-one ate ) breadcrumbs. I've taken the pragmatic view that if I've been "good" the rest of the day, I'll be ok with what is probably only a tablespoon of breadcrumbs - and as it was homemade, it doesn't have the massive amount of sugar and he accelerated yeast process of shop-bought sliced bread.

Does that help carbalanche ?

And no, I'm not going to admit that today after my weigh in I've succumbed to a few too many pieces of tablet that I made for a MN meet-up yesterday. Oh no, not me BlushBlush

BlackAffronted · 19/03/2013 19:50

Awe-inspiring Pretty :)

BlackAffronted · 19/03/2013 19:50

My teeth actually tingle when eating tablet

It's so nice to read how everyone has done - so many really good results! Pretty bird, you've done amazingly well, good for you.

I started a couple of weeks late so still have 2 weight ins to go to get to 10 weeks but I've lost 16lbs thus far despite having a couple of slips due to work travel. I plan to continue while waiting for next Bootcamp - I've not posted much but have got lots of good ideas and support just from reading how everyone is doing.

Thanks BIWI for all your good advice and general low carb expertness and to willie for the spreadsheet (which I may actually join next time).

ecuse · 19/03/2013 22:06

May I drop in and say hello? I've been lurking on and off since Christmas but since I haven't been properly on boot camp I haven't said hello. But now you're all just chatting...

I have been reading and thinking about LCHF for about a year and just took the plunge about three weeks ago. Am not doing strict bootcamp, have done a bit of counting and think I'm at about 50g carbs per day, give or take. Except for last weekend's slip up with a sticky toffee pudding...

So far, I've lost 4.5kg (just over half a stone, I think?) I weigh in kilos now because I don't really know what's 'heavy' in kilos like I do in stones, so it seems less shaming to weigh myself somehow. That's odd, isn't it?

My observations so far are:

  1. For the first time ever I can tell the difference between cravings and hunger
  2. I'm hardly ever hungry, but I do definitely miss carbs
  3. Oh, dear God, that braised cabbage ...
LittleFrieda · 19/03/2013 22:58

Prettybird that is really helpful thanks for sharing.

Breakfast - skipped
lunch - belly pork with green beans and sautéed swede with garlic shallots and parsley
Dinner - chicken breast fried with fresh chilli and garlic , stir fried vegetables and a bit of soy sauce

Blackaffronted - sounds yum. Tell us how you made it (how long did you cook it for?)

LittleFrieda · 19/03/2013 22:59

Hello ecuse. Glad it's working well for you.

Lavenderhoney · 20/03/2013 02:18

Prettybird, that's amazing:) well done again to all the losers.

I found the bootcamp went really quickly, and it was lovely to read the threads and see what others were eating ( and doing!)

I bought some mixed nuts yesterday which is a mistake as I can't stop eating them. Should of bought peanut butter as I like a tiny spoon, and I can stop!

No other lapses, but I need to exercise more ( not just walking and housework)

ChocsandChipsandSealingWax · 20/03/2013 06:18

Finally catching up on the thread and loving all these inspirational posts - well done all you losers and particularly to black, jake THC and pretty - fantastic!

And thanks pretty for the inspirational post. I think I would have done alot better if I'd cut down on alcohol a bit more!

But I am very, very, very (did I mention very? Grin) happy with how I've done!!!! Can't remember now who else is what who posted saying they were aiming for 9 and a half stone because that's all they thought they could achieve, but me too - and now I am coming up to 9 stone being achievable. And everyone keeps commenting on how slim I look and all my clothes are finally looking good again.

I love love love this WOE!!! Thanks BIWI and Willie and all you amazing people for helping me get there! Thanks Thanks Thanks

middleagedspread · 20/03/2013 06:19

I'm following you all & am so impressed. It is so useful to know what people actually are eating.
Well done all of you, I can't wait to share my losses with you.

BlackAffronted · 20/03/2013 07:51

Welcome ecuse! Glad you have found the threads so useful. Well done on your loss :)

LF, cooked it really low in the oven for 6 hours, but it was so worth it! Chucked in some neep (swede?) shallot, mushrooms, celery, star anise, garlic, a bayleaf and some stock.

LH, get sainbos basics peanut butter, its 3.9g carbs compared to between 9-16g in all others ive looked at!

Well done Chocs Grin

mas, I still have a loooong way to go yet, so Ill be here for the long haul. I will be bootcamping between now & the next bootcamp! Perhaps bootcamp light, as I use almond flour occasionally.

Menu yesterday -

B - Omlette & protein shake

L - Salad & coleslaw with cheese & boiled egg

D - Oxtail stew & a couple of small almond flour biscuits. These had sweetener in them though :( delicious all the same!

Last night I made a breakfast meatloaf thing, that is perfect for keeping in the fridge & slicing up! Could be used for lunch as well, perfect for a lunchbox. It is basically beef & pork mince, shallot, paprika, mustard, parsley, streaky bacon & hard boiled eggs. Will stick up a photo & the recipe when I have time.

JakeBullet · 20/03/2013 08:02

Coleslaw.....is that the shop bought stuff or do you all hsve some super recipe?Grin .

BlackAffronted · 20/03/2013 08:10

I always make my own, its far better! I use a recipe that Biwi posted. Shredded white cabbage, grated carrot & chopped shallot (though I usually replace this with sliced spring onion, just my prefernce). Add 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar & mix, this will "cook" the cabbage. Before eating, add a large dollop of mayo & mix through. Add salt & pepper if you like.

middleagedspread · 20/03/2013 08:31

Can I ask about tomatoes?
I use chopped toms/passata as a base for lots of things.
Reading here, it seems that coconut milk might be better.
Also, having tried cauliflower mash I wasn't keen. Stir fried savoy is fine, but can you suggest a bulky alternative?
I made my own coleslaw last night (as suggested) with pine nuts sprinkled on the top, it was lovely.

charfree · 20/03/2013 08:34

Hi everyone, not posted before, but have been following since January, and have lost 7.5kg (89 to 81.5), another 10 kg to go. Have found your conversations really inspirational and wanted to thank you all! Have been trying to lose weight for ages, and toyed about with low carb for a year or so, but this is the first time it's "clicked". As BIWI always advises, I think reading up about low carb is key. I feel quite militant about it now. I long for the day when "high fat" is highlighted on food rather than "low fat"! And the best thing about this WOE is not just the weight-loss, but the shape...I'm much sleeker than I was when i was previously at this weight, due to lack of bloating. So, thanks everyone and will join properly for next bootcamp!

WillieWEggledEgger · 20/03/2013 09:12

brilliant charfree, and please do keep posting!

middleagedspread i would go easy on the tinned tomatoes and passata. it's worth checking the carb count on the labels and working out from the amount you use in your recipes how many grams of carbs that would be per portion. there's no need to cut out completely, but you might be able to use half a can rather than a whole one, and maybe only use it in recipes once a week or so.

coconut milk is good, but again worth checking the labels for different brands as it does contain carbs and you need to be aware how much you are serving in a portion

people on here have enjoyed mashed swede and celeriac, or celeriac chips (they are lovely). this slow braised creamy cabbage is very popular as a veg accompaniment. i have braised broccoli and kale in the same way and both were delicious

thekitchenfairy · 20/03/2013 10:06

Hello everyone!
What a great start to our last week.. I've just had a quick scan so will catch up later.

I am 2lb down... Considering this my whoosh fairy as I have No PMS... Amaze balls!

Thank you to everyone who posted work suggestions... I am getting there, office in middle of nowhere but am resisting the vending machine of doom... Not popular if I take in eggs so experimenting with omelette and salad. This is some adjustment but so far so good!!

carbalanche · 20/03/2013 10:23

Thanks prettybird Thanks for your detailed reply. Very useful to read and quite encouraging to see that you had your minor "deviations" along the way with a bit of wine and a spoon of breadcrumbs here and there.

I have steered clear of avocado because I was warned off them on the Harcombe diet. I might try them as people on here seem to have had them and still managed to lose - and who can beat a good avocado salad with crispy bacon and parmesan!

I also have the 30-day shred but have purposely stayed off it because I ended up with sore knees the last time I did it. As I am now 2 stones HEAVIER then when I did it the last time I think I could do even more damage. I will try again when I have got down to about 11 stone (and leave out the blinking star-jumps which I think did for my knees!)

Might try the braised cabbage because I have got a bit stuck in a rut with my celeriac mash. Need some more interesting veg side-dishes. Loving blackaffronted's recipes BTW - very inspirational!

ecuse · 20/03/2013 10:36

B - 2x hard boiled eggs, 5x cocktail sausages, small lump cheddar, mayonnaise for dipping
L - chicken & avocado salad w/vinaigrette
D - chilli con carne, home made coleslaw

MyFitnessPal makes that 51g of carbs

Ormiriathomimus · 20/03/2013 10:59

Hi folks

doing my own version of Atkins. I was a die-hard Atkinsite for a few years about 8 years ago. Lost 20lbs and got down to BMI 21. But I did get bored of it and reverted to basically healthy eating and lots of running. Lost more (partly due to anxiety and panic attacks) !! But meno, ADs and comfort eating has dragged me back to the wagon.

5 weeks gone, and I have lost about 2 inches off the waist, a load of flab off the hips and belly. I didn't weigh myself to start with because I was SCARED! But now I weight 172lbs - BMI 24 - which is scary enough!! I want to lose another stone - maybe more. But I am OK with it taking time.

Not running anymore Sad. I have big problems in my left knee (caused I suspect when I used to run for miles on roads) and tendonitis in my left foot. I might do the odd short run but mostly I just walk for miles with dog.

littlermissstan · 20/03/2013 11:07

I'm with charfree on the sleeker thing - I know I am heavier than I was a couple of years ago, but things that were too tight on the waist then fit much better now despite the extra pounds. Given that I am having my wedding dress measuring in three weeks this must be a good thing :)

ecuse · 20/03/2013 11:18

Already noticing trousers are less tight here, too. Haven't measured waist yet, but must do so - much better indicator of health than weight/BMI, I think!

Iamaslummymummy · 20/03/2013 11:56

May have fallen into a Costa white chocolate and raspberry muffin and had ginger bread syrup in my decaf soy latte Blush

However it was definitely worth it Grin I tried two butter biscuits last week amd they were not worth it but a Costa as a treat was lovely. Did wonders for my depression on happiness day. Grin

Have also discovered marscapone. Yuuuuuuum!
